SUMMARY:South Platte River: Brighton to Fort Lupton - Rescheduled
DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled to Saturday  March 21 \nMat’s Update: \nDue to forecasted high winds of 20-25\, gusting to 43 mph and Sunday is 40% chance of snow with a high of 38 deg\, I am rescheduling the Brighton to Fort Lupton trip to Saturday\, March 21st forecast today is for zero% chance of precip\, high of 91 and winds of 11mph \nAnyone who signed up for the March 13th trip needs to resign up for the 21st if your schedule permits. \nSign up with trip coordinator Mat Bozek\, matbozekx@gmail.com. \nThe South Platte River from Brighton to Fort Lupton is generally a beginner friendly 9-mile trip that is lined with cottonwoods hosting numerous birds and other wildlife… a nice way to begin the paddling season. There is one mandatory portage at a dam\, and one boat chute drop early on that will also be portaged depending on conditions. Meet at Veterans Park in Brighton (junction of Hwy 7 and 85 – W of 85\, N of 7) at 8 a.m.  and be ready to begin the car shuttle no later than 9 am.  Take out is at Fort Lupton’s ballfields park.  Bring rain gear\, canoe floatation\, painters\, spare paddle and of course a PFD. Also bring a set of dry clothes in a waterproof bag and a lunch or snack (20 min break).  Don’t pack too heavy!\,  the two portages are not all that easy\, and you need to cross a boulder field and fence. \nWarning! – there are now a very lot of strainers (trees) in the river with a lot of tight turns – you need to have good boat handling skills to avoid them.  The lower the water is\, the tighter the gaps past the sweepers. \nACA Waivers required\nThis will be an ACA trip – e-mail your aca # to Mat. If not an ACA member\, bring $10 per person for the insurance fee. \nIf you are not an ACA member\, you can sign an Event Waiver online using this link:  https://aca.sport80.com/public/wizard/a/1370/home.  This wizard will have you create an account with the ACA without becoming a full-fledged ACA member.  When doing the on-line waiver use the event name:  South Platte.  Use the date:  March 21\, 2026.  This waiver will not collect the $10 fee in advance.  If you want to create an Event Waiver and pay the fee directly to the ACA\, use this link:  https://aca.sport80.com/public/wizard/a/1371/home. Again\, you will be creating an account with the ACA just for the purpose of signing and paying for an event waiver.  No refunds if you pay for the waiver in advance\, but you make life easier for your trip coordinator\, paddle master and club treasurer. \nPaper waivers are also an option.  You can print (NEW ACA WAIVER) in advance or fill out the form your trip coordinator has at the put in. Pay $10 cash or pay by check payable to the ACA to the trip coordinator before you get on the water. Minor waivers are at: AMERICAN CANOE ASSOCIATION\, INC \nPotentially the trip may be run on Sunday depending on the weather. \n

SUMMARY:CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN: Niobrara River Memorial Day - MAY 23 -MAY 26 2025
DESCRIPTION:This will be an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a $10/person insurance fee.  This is an easy\, kids-friendly class 1 river\, with our campground in the middle of the run.  Each day will be about 12 miles and about 4 hours. For more information about skill level\,  safety and equipment\, please read and follow  RMCC Boating Requirements and Recommendations. \nThis beautiful stretch is one of America’s premier scenic heritage waterways; we’ll see many waterfalls\, beautiful hardwood forests\, and birds!  And the resident buffalo herd at the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (https://www.fws.gov/refuge/fort_niobrara/ ) often has calves this time of year.  We run the river on Saturday and Sunday. Most will car camp at Smith Falls State Park\, Friday – Sunday nights; return to the Front Range after breakfast on Monday (about a 6-7 hour drive back to Denver) or continue to see the sights of Nebraska or head up to South Dakota. \nMemorial Day is shoulder season in the Sand Hills of Nebraska and we often have rain on parts of one or more days.  \nNiobrara River Trail description here .  \nDescription from Backpacker magazine:  http://www.backpacker.com/stories/paddle-nebraska-s-niobrara-river \nRiver gage at https://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=06461500.  We generally run it at between 1000 and 2000 cfs. \nSaturday\, we’ll meet at 10am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the Cornell Bridge put-in near Valentine\, down to the Smith Falls State Park campground and beach the canoes\, and then start from there again on Sunday.   If you are not camping\, but meeting us in the morning\, see the note\, below for directions. \nSaturday evening – optional potluck dinner at one of the convenient campsites.  There is a large group shelter generally available in case of rain. \nSunday\, we’ll meet near the boat ramp (where we took out on Saturday) at 10am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the campground to the take-out – probably at Sunny Brook Camp\, about a mile upstream of Rocky Ford.  The shuttle takes over an hour\, so non-drivers should plan to relax\, hike to Smith Falls\, and/or birdwatch at the campground while the drivers are driving. We will verify the 10am shuttle start on Saturday night. \nSunday evening: Informal group happy hour possible\, but no specific group activity planned.  Some of us will be checking out (i.e.\, scouting\, not running) the Norden chute and going to the The Nature Conservancy Niobrara Valley Preserve near there) (https://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/nebraska/placesweprotect/niobrara-valley-preserve.xml  \nCamping \nThe campground at Smith Falls State Park is open for reservations now for drive-in and walk-in sites  (there is no group site).   We used to have the campground to ourselves but in recent years\, it’s gotten more crowded and generally fills for Memorial Day before May. The campground was reconfigured for 2021\, adding more sites and mixing the use between tents and RVs in all sites. The camping cost is $15/day/site plus a day use fee. You can make reservations now – here’s the link to the on-line camping reservations  https://nebraskastateparks.reserveamerica.com \nNote: Directions to Cornell Bridge from Valentine:  Take Nebraska 12 east about 4 miles to the Ft Niobrara Wildlife refuge turn-off. Turn right towards the river and then make the first right into the access parking lot. Be there by 10 am ready to shuttle and be sure to purchase your $1 wrist-band at the kiosk \nContact Bill Ashworth (washwort@gmail.com) to register for the trip if you didn’t sign up via the Planning and Permit survey

SUMMARY:Missouri Breaks -- Fall
DESCRIPTION:We are in the final planning stage for a fall Upper Missouri Breaks National Monument trip — September 17 – 26 with two days of driving on each end.  The trip length includes\, we hope\, multiple hikes with a couple layover days.  We plan to boat 108 miles from Coal Banks Landing (mile 41.5) to Kipps Recreation Area (mile 149) with options for adding 41 miles upstream (putting in at Fort Benton) or shortening by taking out at Judith Landing (mile 88.5).  Alternatives from our chosen route/timing would be yours to arrange/coordinate.  IN GENERAL — we intend this trip as a low key paddle with lots of stops/stays for hiking\, but if winds/weather are issues\, we may be getting on the river early. \nThis will be an ACA-sanctioned trip — ACA membership or $10 event fee required. \nThe GoogleDoc at   https://docs.google.com/document/d/1tMbiGBbNHwwxkb7HWWxB1oc_1ZPGoahtR7sIS6PdIPg/edit  includes general information and some planning particulars (e.g.\, shuttles\, costs\, potential hikes and camps)\nContact Kathryn Mutz at (gvmutz at gmail.com) AFTER you read the GoogleDoc if you have questions or are interested.  We will limit the trip to about 10 boaters.

Some of us will be checking out (i.e.\, scouting\, not running) the Norden chute and going to the The Nature Conservancy Niobrara Valley Preserve near there) (https://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/nebraska/placesweprotect/niobrara-valley-preserve.xml  \nCamping \nThe campground at Smith Falls State Park doesn’t open until early May  and there is no official group site.   We used to have the campground to ourselves but in recent years\, its gotten more crowded. The campground was reconfigured for 2021\, adding more sites and mixing the use between tents and RVs in all sites. You can make reservations now – here’s the link to the on-line camping reservations  https://nebraskastateparks.reserveamerica.com \nYou can also call the park for reservations ( (402) 376-1306) but your best bet is on-line. The camping cost is $15/day/site plus a day use fee. \nNote: Directions to Cornell Bridge from Valentine:  Take Nebraska 12 east about 4 miles to the Ft Niobrara Wildlife refuge turn-off.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED TO APRIL 1: Check back for updates 18th Almost Annual Joint Club Paddle -- South Platte Evans to Kersey or Kuner
DESCRIPTION:Our hopes have been dashed by weather for Saturday March 25 \, so we are rescheduling for Saturday\, April 1 with a re-evaluation of the weather on Thursday March 30th. \nHope springs eternal as weather warms (and chills)\, sun shines (and it snows) and thoughts edge closer (regardless!) to boating.  Five boating clubs are aiming for Saturday\, March 25 for the Joint Club Paddle with a snow day alternative of April 1.  See the 2023 Joint Club flier for important details.  Registration is not essential\, but is helpful for planning.  And we are trying a Google Forms\, on-line registration this year — complements of our partner HCRR.  Thanks Nick!  \nTo register on-line click on 2023 Joint Club Registration. or just email me at gvmutz at gmail.com. \nHope you can join us!  Read the flier for particulars and contact me or another of the trip hosts (see the flier) with any questions. \nKathryn

SUMMARY:Ruby - Horsethief Canyons of the Colorado\, Loma to Westwater\, October 11 - 14\, 2022: 3 nights / 4 days
DESCRIPTION:This is a autumn trip — 4-days / 3-nights — paddling and hiking in Horsethief and Ruby Canyons of the Colorado River in western Colorado and eastern Utah — Tuesday\, October 11th – Friday\, October 14th.  If all goes well we will launch the 11th by 10 am\, be hiking in Rattlesnake Canyon (Mile 3.2) until late afternoon and camping at Beavertail 2 (Mile 3.6).  The 12th we’ll paddle about 10 miles to Mee Canyon (Mile 13.6)\, hiking in the afternoon/evening and/or the following morning to early afternoon.  Late afternoon\, October 13\, we paddle about 3 miles down to Black Rocks 5 (Mile 16.5).  October 14 is takeout day — but don’t expect to get to Westwater before late afternoon.  We will start early and paddle about 1.5 miles to McDonald Creek to check out the petroglyphs and then another .2 mile to Knowles Canyon to hike.   \nSee the recently revised trip flier for details and requirements. \nBecause this is intended to be a boating AND HIKING trip\, expect to be paddling in the late afternoon when the winds are likely to be the worst.  The two longest hikes (Rattlesnake Canyon on Day 1 and Knowles Canyon on Day 4 will not be hiking from camp.  You don’t have to hike\, but BLM rules require that\, as boaters\, we stay together as a group.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED -RMCC Gross Reservoir Day Paddle Sat June 4 2022
DESCRIPTION:Due to Denver Water’s closure of the Osprey Pt boat access for the duration of the dam expansion project\, this trip has been cancelled. If the North Access becomes reasonable\, we may reschedule this trip later in the summer. \nPlease join us for a paddle and picnic on Gross Reservoir – a hidden gem in the foothills above Boulder. Owner’s name\, address\, and phone number must be legibly marked on all canoes and kayaks per Gross Reservoir ranger. Also\, only non-motorized car-top-carried boats are allowed\, and boats can be no more than 18-feet in length. \nBe at the boat ramp ready to paddle at 9am (strong winds come up most afternoon) and the access road fills early with paddle boarders and kayakers. \nDirections From Boulder: \n\nHead west on Baseline Road which becomes Flagstaff Road and then eastern Gross Dam Road.\nFollow signs to Osprey Boat Launch Site.\nDriving time is approximately 45 minutes from Baseline and Broadway.\n\nDirections from Denver:Take Highway 93 north to Highway 72. \n\nTurn left (west) on Highway 72 toward Pinecliffe to County Road 77/Gross Dam Road.\nTurn right on Gross Dam Road and follow signs to Osprey Boat Launch Site\nDrive time is approximately 1.25 hours from Denver to Gross.\n\nPlease RSVP to Bill (contact info below) by the preceding Thursday. \nCoordinators: \nBill Ashworth\, 720-352-6456  washwort at gmail.com

For more information about skill level and equipment information\, see RMCC Boating Requirements and Recommendations. Some of us will be checking out (i.e.\, scouting\, not running) the Norden chute and going to the The Nature Conservancy Niobrara Valley Preserve near there) (https://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/nebraska/placesweprotect/niobrara-valley-preserve.xml  \nCamping \nThe campground at Smith Falls State Park doesn’t open until Maqy 1 and there is no official group site. Turn right towards the river and then make the first right into the access parking lot. Be there by 11 am ready to shuttle and be sure to purchase your $1 wrist-band at the kiosk \nContact Bill Ashworth (washwort@gmail.com) to register for the trip if you didn’t sign up via the Planning and Permit survey

SUMMARY:Yampa\, South Beach to Duffy Mountain May 14\, 2022 - May 15\, 2022. Trip full. Waitlist available.
DESCRIPTION:The South Beach to Duffy Mountain stretch of the Yampa is an easy flatwater/Class I trip.  In early May we have had good flow and not many mosquitoes\, and not much (if any) competition for campsites. \nThis is a good trip to break out your gear from storage and get ready for the canoe season.  It is also an easy trip for people new to canoeing and canoe camping.  Pack a warm sleeping bag because the mornings will be frosty. As usual\, be ready for all weather conditions from pouring rain\, to snow\, and to sunshine.  Also\, you can expect strong afternoon headwinds. \nThe first day’s float will be through private ranch land where the eagle nests will be seen.  Many bald eagle nests are on this stretch and  some may have visible babies in them.  The second day we will be paddling through BLM land\, which is more scenic but without the eagle nests and without the railroad.  Flocks of sheep with big scary sheep dogs may be seen\, but we will not be camping with them. \nTo register for this event\, email Trip Coordinator Dan Custer at custer.dan@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Upper Missouri National Wild & Scenic River\, Montana. May 12th- May 19th\, 2022. (8 Days\, 150 river miles) Class 1\, ACA trip
DESCRIPTION:It is 777 miles from\, Denver to the put in at Fort Benton \nWe will be camping 7 nights on the river. This is the famous “White Cliffs” / “Missouri Breaks”  Section of the Missouri RIver. \nNo little kids\, no dogs\, NO WHINING allowed. \nMandatory equipment will include an alarm clock for each tent. Yes\, an alarm clock! for the mandatory 8 AM start each day. This section is known for high upriver winds\, and we will be on the water each day by 8 AM so as to get to camp by early afternoon to avoid the worst of the winds. Aside from high winds\, other hazards include rattlesnakes\, ice cold water\, falling cottonwood branches\, soft crumbly rock (on hikes) and all the usual other hazards of river travel\, as well as some (not so minor) potential for spring blizzards. \nWe will be camping in a mix of “primitive” and “developed” boat camps (and potentially just bushwhack camping if necessary). River toilets are mandatory\, except that WAG Bags are an acceptable alternative if you put them into a waterproof container. Everyone will be responsible for their own Poo – No S***!. I’m not hauling yours. The river water is not fit for drinking\, even if filtering\, as it contains agricultural runoff of fertilizers and pesticides (and it’s not known as The Big Muddy for nothing). Everyone is required to carry enough drinking water for the full trip. I expect to carry 7 gallons myself – ½ gal for first and last days and a full gallon for each day between. Recommended is a gallon per person per day. At 8 lbs/gallon\, that 56 pounds to start with (per person\, at least). \n I hope to get to camp early enough to allow time for some hiking in the afternoons. I am planning on 6 camps and 6 travel days\, with one day in reserve to use as a layover\, or makeup day if needed. May is the highest flow rate\, so I anticipate a fair current – expect to paddle at least one or two 30 mile days\, which means you need to be in good enough physical condition to paddle (not float) for 6 to 8 hours each day. If the current is flowing at 2mph and we paddle at 3 mph\, that’s 5mph and 6 hours of actual paddling time to cover 30 miles. Could be more or less depending on conditions. \nThe shuttle service in Ft. Benton has a 10 passenger van . We may opt to do our own shuttle if we arrive at Ft Benton soon enough We may need to use two shuttle services\, or maybe pre-shuttle some of our vehicles. Depending\, shuttle service will cost a minimum of $40 per driver – could be double that or more) The shuttle is 150 miles one-way\, which is why I prefer to use a shuttle service. \nFEES: aside from the shuttle fees\, you should bring enough cash to pay for camping at the pay campgrounds if we are forced to use them (varies from $5 to $12 per site) \nBLM River Trip Fees = $4 per person per day = $28 per person – we will pay at the Coal Banks Landing ranger station.. \n\n\n\n\nWhile this can be characterized as a beginner level trip\, a beginner would have to have moving water experience and be physically and mentally able to paddle the 6 to 8 hours per day\, day after day. The river is Class 1 – there are about 15 named rapids which are mainly at islands\, and would seem to be just large wave trains. In higher water\, most all of those rapids get washed out. No slow boats for this trip – you will need to be able keep up a moderate pace all day\,especially if we are fighting headwinds. \nNo sign ups before March 1st \nSign up with Trip Coordinator: Mat Bozek\, matbozekx@gmail.com to register for this trip or ask questions.

SUMMARY:Revised: 17th Almost Annual Joint Club Paddle - South Platte River\, Evans to Kersey or Kuner
DESCRIPTION:If you are considering joining us\, PLEASE NOTE:  March 26th weather is looking good\, but this is no longer a family-friendly\, first-timer’s run — you have to be able to control your boat to avoid multiple gravel bars and strainers and to portage two dangerous dams.  Please see the description in the revised flier — especially the description of dam portages — and contact Kathryn if you want to discuss it. \nThe Rocky Mountain Canoe Club\, Poudre Paddlers\, Flatwater Frogs\, Rocky Mountain Sea Kayak Club\, High Country River Rafters\, and Colorado Whitewater will be back on the South Platte River to celebrate the 2022 padding season.  Our traditional put-in at Riverside Park in Evans\, Colorado reopened following restoration of severe damage from the September 2013 floods and our main takeout at Kersey has a new bridge. \nJoin us on March 26 (weather permitting) on a Class I+ paddle from Evans to Kersey Bridge or Kuner.  \nRegistration is not required (but will get you an email if we have to punt to our April 2 “snow date”) and non-members are welcome to join.  Because we have other clubs involved\, this is only a partial (hybrid) ACA-sanctioned trip (no ACA membership/$10 event fee required)\, but all participants must sign liability waivers. \nFor more detail\, see the Revised Joint Club Paddle Flier and then\, if desired\, contact Kathryn Mutz

SUMMARY:South Platte River: Brighton to Fort Lupton. March 19th\, 2022 (Sat.) 9:00 am - to 2:00pm
DESCRIPTION:The South Platte River from Brighton to Fort Lupton is generally a beginner friendly 9 mile trip that is lined with cottonwoods hosting numerous birds and other wildlife… a nice way to begin the paddling season. There is one mandatory portage at a dam and one boat chute drop early on that will most likely be portaged depending on conditions. Meet at Veterans Park in Brighton and be ready to begin the car shuttle no later than 9 am. Take out is at Fort Lupton’s ballfields park. Bring Rain Gear\, canoe floatation\, painters\, spare paddle and of course a PFD. Also bring a set of dry clothes in a water proof bag and a lunch or snack. Don’t pack too heavy\, the two portages are not all that easy\, and you need to cross a boulder field and fence. \nFor a detailed description of the river and parking areas go to: http://boc123.com/Kayak/RiverGuide/South_Platte_Brighton_City.cfm \nThis will be an ACA trip – e-mail your aca # to mat. If not an ACA member\, bring $10 per person for the insurance fee. Potentially the trip may be run on Sunday depending on the weather. \nWarning! – there are now multiple strainers (trees) in the river with a lot of tight turns – you need to have good boat handling skills to avoid them. \nNo sign ups before March 1st \nSign up with Trip Coordinator: Mat Bozek\, matbozekx@gmail.com to register for this trip or ask questions.

Most will car camp at Smith Falls State Park\, Friday – Sunday nights; return to the Front Range after breakfast on Monday (about a 6-7 hour drive back to Denver) or continue to see the sights of Nebraska or head up to South Dakota. \nSaturday\, we’ll meet at 10am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the Cornell Bridge put-in near Valentine\, down to the State Park campground and beach the canoes and then start from then again on Sunday. Some of us will be checking out (i.e.\, scouting\, not running) the Norden chute and going to the TNC Niobrara Valley Preserve near there) (https://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/nebraska/placesweprotect/niobrara-valley-preserve.xml  \nCamping \nThe campground doesn’t open until a couple of weeks before Memorial Day and there is no official group site.  Tents will go down by the river and RVs and trailers will be put on the slope across the road from the tents.  Several sites are VERY large and could easily accommodate 4 or 5 tents if folks would like a group setting or just couldn’t get a reservation.  Smith Falls State Park (402) 376-1306)\, 2019 Costs in prior years: Day use fee $5/car\, camping fee $8/person/night\, showers included.  Phone reservations will likely be taken starting early May.    \n  \nNote: Directions to Cornell Bridge from Valentine:  Take Nebraska 12 east about 4 miles to the Ft Niobrara Wildlife refuge turn-off. Turn right towards the river and then make the first right into the access parking lot. Be there by 11 am ready to shuttle and be sure to purchase your $1 wrist-band at the kiosk
