SUMMARY:Yampa\, South Beach to Duffy Mountain
DESCRIPTION:THIS TRIP IS CURRENTLY FULL AND A WAITING LIST HAS BEEN STARTED.  If you wish to be added to the waiting list\, please contact the Trip Coordinator\, Dan Custer at custer.dan@gmail.com. \nThe South Beach to Duffy Mountain stretch of the Yampa is an easy flatwater/Class I trip.  In early May we have had very good flow and not many mosquitoes\, and not much (if any) competition for campsites. In recent years the water level in early May has been excellent with very few paddle strikes on the bottom of the river. \nThis is a good trip to break out your gear from storage and get ready for the canoe season.  It is also an easy trip for people new to canoeing and canoe camping.  Pack a warm sleeping bag because the mornings will be frosty. As usual\, be ready for all weather conditions from pouring rain\, to snow\, and to sunshine.  Afternoon sunshine has been the norm. \nThe first day’s float will be through private ranch land where the eagle nests will be seen.  Many bald eagle nests are on this stretch and  some may have visible babies in them.  The second day we will be paddling through BLM land\, which is more scenic but without the eagle nests (and railroad).  Flocks of sheep with big scary sheep dogs may be seen\, but we will not be camping with them. \nWe will do this stretch in 2 days\, with an option for some to do it in 3 days.  A two day weekend trip works for many. Optionally\, some may go for a three day trip\, where the last day should finish by Noon\, thus avoiding potentially strong afternoon headwinds before the take-out.  \nTo register for this event\, email Trip Coordinator Dan Custer at custer.dan@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Trip Full - RMCC Colorado River Loma to Westwater Oct 3 - 4
DESCRIPTION:Join RMCC as we paddle the Colorado River from Loma\, CO to the Westwater Station boat ramp in Utah through  Ruby and Horsethief Canyons . We’ll be camping at one of the larger sites on the river Saturday night – TBD. Our late September date should offer gorgeous fall color on the canyon bottom. This is an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a $5/person insurance fee. There is $100 campsite fee which I will pay in July and the estimated $5/paddler will be due to me on the river. If the trip is cancelled (happened due to high forecasted winds once in 12 years)\, I’ll need the camping fee from registered paddlers regardless. Check out the trip flyer  RMCC-Ruby-Horsethief-flyer 2020 . Contact Bill Ashworth to sign up or with questions at washwort at gmail.com. 720-352-6456  \nNote: Starting this July\, Colorado Hunting or Fishing licenses required for Loma launch. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Niobrara River - Sept 19-20
DESCRIPTION:This will be an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a $5/person insurance fee.  This is an easy\, kids-friendly class 1 river\, with our campground in the middle of the run.  Each day will be about 12 miles and about 4 hours. Contact David Kerry (davidkerryedwards@yahoo.com) to register for the trip. Canoes and kayaks are available to rent from local outfitters. Let me know if you need additional information about that. \nThis beautiful stretch is one of America’s premier scenic heritage waterways; we’ll see many waterfalls\, beautiful hardwood forests\, and woodland birds!  And the resident buffalo herd at the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (https://www.fws.gov/refuge/fort_niobrara/ ) often has calves this time of year.  We run the river on Saturday and Sunday. Most will car camp at Smith Falls State Park\, Friday – Sunday nights (May 22-24); return to the Front Range after breakfast on Monday (about a 6-7 hour drive back to Denver) or continue to see the sights of Nebraska or head up to South Dakota. \nNiobrara River Trail description here .  \nDescription from Backpacker magazine:  http://www.backpacker.com/stories/paddle-nebraska-s-niobrara-river \nRiver gage at https://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=06461500.  We generally run it between 1000-2000 cfs. \nSaturday\, we’ll meet at 9am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the Cornell Bridge put-in near Valentine\, paddle down to the State Park campground\, beach the canoes and then start from there again on Sunday.   If you are not camping\, but meeting us in the morning\, see the note\, below for directions. \nSaturday evening – optional potluck appetizers and dinner at one of the convenient campsites (location to be announced and look for the RMCC banner).  There is a large group shelter generally  available in case of rain. \nSunday\, we’ll meet near the boat ramp (where we took out on Saturday) at 9am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the campground to the take-out – probably at Sunny Brook Camp\, about a mile upstream of Rocky Ford.  The shuttle takes over an hour\, so non-drivers should plan to relax\, hike to Smith Falls\, and/or birdwatch at the campground while the drivers are driving. We will verify the 10am shuttle start on Saturday night. \nSunday evening: Informal group happy hour possible\, but no specific group activity planned.  Some of us will be checking out (i.e.\, scouting\, not running) the Norden chute and going to the The Nature Conservancy Niobrara Valley Preserve near there) (https://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/nebraska/placesweprotect/niobrara-valley-preserve.xml );  see a recent TNC blog at: https://prairieecologist.com/2018/05/04/photo-of-the-week-may-4-2018/ \nCamping \nThe Smith Falls State Park campground (http://outdoornebraska.gov/smithfalls/) doesn’t open until a week or two before Memorial Day and there is no official group site.  Tents will go down by the river and RVs and trailers will be put on the slope across the road from the tents.  Several sites are VERY large and could easily accommodate 4 or 5 tents if folks would like a group setting or just couldn’t get a reservation.  Smith Falls State Park (402) 376-1306)\, $5/person/night\, showers included.  Phone reservations will likely be taken starting early May. \nNote: Directions to Cornell Bridge from Valentine:  Take Nebraska 12 east about 4 miles to the Ft Niobrara Wildlife refuge turn-off. Turn right towards the river and then make the first right into the access parking lot. Be there by 9 am ready to shuttle and be sure to purchase your $1 wrist-band at the kiosk. \nCamping is available in Valentine town park if people don’t want to drive out to Smith Falls Friday night. Also camping is available just south of Valentine at Merritt Reservoir although it can be busy on a Friday night. \n  \nIMPORTANT: Valentine is on CENTRAL TIME.

SUMMARY:Cancelled - Yampa River: South Beach to Duffy Mountain

If you wish to be added to the waiting list\, please contact Trip Coordinator Dan Custer at custer.dan@gmail.com \n  \nThe South Beach to Duffy Mountain stretch of the Yampa an easy flatwater/Class I trip.  Last year we had very good flow\, even though later in the summer the river had extremely low water.  Early May is a good time to float the Yampa because the bugs will not be a problem\, there should not be competition for campsites\, and for the last couple of years the water level in early May has been excellent. \nThis is a good trip to break your gear out of storage and get ready for the canoe season.  It is also an easy trip for people new to canoeing and canoe camping to go out on an overnight trip.  Pack a warm sleeping bag because the morning will likely be frosty. \nThe first day’s float will be through private ranch land\, and that is where the eagle nests will be seen.  The last two years we not only spotted bald eagles and their nests\, we also saw baby eagles in the nests.  The second day will be paddling through BLM land\, which is more scenic but without the eagle nests.  Flocks of sheep with big scary sheep dogs may be on river left\, but we will not be camping with them. \nTo register for this event\, email Trip Coordinator Dan Custer at custer.dan@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:RMCC Memorial Day Niobrara River - survived the flood; trip is a GO
DESCRIPTION:This will be an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a $5/person insurance fee.  This is an easy\, kids-friendly class 1 river\, with our campground in the middle of the run.  Each day will be about 12 miles and about 4 hours. Contact Bill Ashworth (washwort@gmail.com) to register for the trip. \nThis beautiful stretch is one of America’s premier scenic heritage waterways; we’ll see many waterfalls\, beautiful hardwood forests\, and birds!  And the resident buffalo herd at the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (https://www.fws.gov/refuge/fort_niobrara/ ) often has calves this time of year.  We run the river on Saturday and Sunday. Most will car camp at Smith Falls State Park\, Friday – Sunday nights (May 24-27); return to the Front Range after breakfast on Monday (about a 6-7 hour drive back to Denver) or continue to see the sights of Nebraska or head up to South Dakota. \nNiobrara River Trail description here .  \nDescription from Backpacker magazine:  http://www.backpacker.com/stories/paddle-nebraska-s-niobrara-river \nRiver gage at https://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=06461500.  We ran it at about 1500 cfs in 2017.  \nSaturday\, we’ll meet at 11am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the Cornell Bridge put-in near Valentine\, down to the State Park campground and beach the canoes and then start from then again on Sunday.   If you are not camping\, but meeting us in the morning\, see the note\, below for directions. \nSaturday evening – optional potluck appetizers and dinner at one of the convenient campsites (location to be announced and look for the RMCC banner).  There is a large group shelter generallyavailable in case of rain. \nSunday\, we’ll meet near the boat ramp (where we took out on Saturday) at 10am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the campground to the take-out – probably at Sunny Brook Camp\, about a mile upstream of Rocky Ford. Some of us will be checking out (i.e.\, scouting\, not running) the Norden chute and going to the TNC Niobrara Valley Preserve near there) (https://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/nebraska/placesweprotect/niobrara-valley-preserve.xml );  see a recent TNC blog at: https://prairieecologist.com/2018/05/04/photo-of-the-week-may-4-2018/ \nCamping \nThe campground doesn’t open until just before Memorial Day and there is no official group site. Phone reservations will likely be taken starting May 6th.    \nNote: Directions to Cornell Bridge from Valentine:  Take Nebraska 12 east about 4 miles to the Ft Niobrara Wildlife refuge turn-off. Turn right towards the river and then make the first right into the access parking lot. Be there by 11 am ready to shuttle and be sure to purchase your $1 wrist-band at the kiosk. \nIMPORTANT: Valentine is on CENTRAL TIME.

SUMMARY:11 Mile Reservoir Backcountry Camping\, Touring\, and Hiking - Cancelled
DESCRIPTION:Cancelled due to expected cold weather and low sign-up \n11 Mile Reservoir is a state park in the South Park area\, west of Colorado Springs.  It is fed by the South Platte River and sits at about 8400′ elevation.  1/4 of the lake is surrounded by nice rock formations and pine trees and includes  over 20 backcountry campsites.  They are free after September 10\, but there are the usual state park fees.  The goal will be to camp there Saturday night\, and optionally Sunday night\, paddle around the scenic SW end of the lake\, do some hiking and other activities.  It breaks down as follows: \n1) Camp Friday eve (16th) on BLM land a few miles NE of the entrance to the park per directions Karen will give. \n2) Get to the backcountry parking lot by 8:00am and be on the water by 8:45am on Saturday. \n3) Paddle 1/3 mile to check availability of my 5 favored camps and pick a couple of them; dump gear and continue on a paddle toward the dam keeping a constant eye on any wind moving in. \n4) Set up camps; various activities can include hiking\, games\, reading\, cooking\, and fishing. \n5) If you cannot stay Sunday night\, then best to pack up and paddle out early Sunday morning before the wind picks up. \n6) If you can stay Sunday night then repeat paddling exploration of the pretty end of the lake along with more of the various activities; note that winds sometimes move in to the area as early as 10:30am\, so the plan is keeping this in mind \n7) Pack up and paddle out early Monday morning; some of us will get to work by noon. \nFor further information or to register for this family friendly trip\, contact Karen Amundson by calling 303-734-0923 or by emailing her at canoekarena@msn.com
