DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled to Saturday  March 21 \nMat’s Update: \nDue to forecasted high winds of 20-25\, gusting to 43 mph and Sunday is 40% chance of snow with a high of 38 deg\, I am rescheduling the Brighton to Fort Lupton trip to Saturday\, March 21st forecast today is for zero% chance of precip\, high of 91 and winds of 11mph \nAnyone who signed up for the March 13th trip needs to resign up for the 21st if your schedule permits. \nSign up with trip coordinator Mat Bozek\, matbozekx@gmail.com. \nThe South Platte River from Brighton to Fort Lupton is generally a beginner friendly 9-mile trip that is lined with cottonwoods hosting numerous birds and other wildlife… a nice way to begin the paddling season. There is one mandatory portage at a dam\, and one boat chute drop early on that will also be portaged depending on conditions. Meet at Veterans Park in Brighton (junction of Hwy 7 and 85 – W of 85\, N of 7) at 8 a.m.  and be ready to begin the car shuttle no later than 9 am.  Take out is at Fort Lupton’s ballfields park.  Bring rain gear\, canoe floatation\, painters\, spare paddle and of course a PFD. Also bring a set of dry clothes in a waterproof bag and a lunch or snack (20 min break).  Don’t pack too heavy!\,  the two portages are not all that easy\, and you need to cross a boulder field and fence. \nWarning! – there are now a very lot of strainers (trees) in the river with a lot of tight turns – you need to have good boat handling skills to avoid them.  The lower the water is\, the tighter the gaps past the sweepers. \nACA Waivers required\nThis will be an ACA trip – e-mail your aca # to Mat. Fun\, dynamic drills and games will help you learn basic skills for moving the canoe as efficiently as possible using the following strokes: forward and backward strokes\, sweeps\, draws\, pries\, and the J stroke.\nMaximum number of boats for this class is eight. \nEssentials of Canoeing Part II: Moving Water  (Prerequisite: Flatwater class or verified experience) \nSunday\, May 10\, 2026: Two sessions: 8:00 am – 12:00 pm  OR  1:00 pm – 5:00 pm \nTake your flatwater skills on to moving water on Day 2 where you will learn skills for paddling in a Class I (easy) section of river. SUMMARY:Niobrara River Memorial Day Weekend (FULL)
DESCRIPTION:THE TRADITION CONTINUES (and now it is FULL) \nThis is an easy\, kids-friendly class 1 river\, with our campground in the middle of the run.  Each day will be about 12 miles and about 4 hours. Canoes\, kayaks and inflatables are OK.  Please indicate what type boat and number of folks in the boat when you register.  A mixture of boat types means we will have to very intentional and careful to stay together.  We will be dividing ourselves into two or perhaps three paddling groups for safety.  As of March 13\, we have 24 boats registered and the trip is FULL. \nPremier scenic waterway\nThis beautiful stretch is one of America’s premier scenic heritage waterways; we’ll see many waterfalls\, beautiful hardwood forests\, and birds!  And the resident buffalo herd at the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (https://www.fws.gov/refuge/fort_niobrara/ ) often has calves this time of year.  We float the river on Saturday and Sunday. Most will car camp at Smith Falls State Park\, Friday – Sunday nights; return to the Front Range after breakfast on Monday (about a 6-7 hour drive back to Denver) or continue to see the sights of Nebraska or head up to South Dakota. Some folks may continue camping at Merritt Reservoir before heading home.  Keep an eye on the calendar for details. \nMemorial Day is shoulder season in the Sand Hills of Nebraska and we often have rain on parts of one or more days. \nNiobrara River Trail description here . \nDescription from Backpacker magazine:  http://www.backpacker.com/stories/paddle-nebraska-s-niobrara-river \nRiver gage at https://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=06461500.  We generally run it at between 1000 and 2000 cfs. \nFloat Plan\nSaturday\, we’ll meet at 9am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the Cornell Bridge put-in near Valentine\, down to the Smith Falls State Park campground and beach the canoes/kayaks\, and then start from there again on Sunday.   If you are not camping\, but meeting us in the morning\, see the note\, below for directions.  Bring dollars in cash to purchase wristband for each paddler. \nSaturday evening – Optional potluck dinner organized by Gay Lynn Olsen. We have reserved the large group shelter in case of rain.  Bring your own plates and cutlery plus some cash (less than $5 each) to share the cost of the shelter. \nSunday\, we’ll meet near the boat ramp (where we took out on Saturday) at 9 am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the campground to the take-out – probably at Sunny Brook Camp\, about a mile upstream of Rocky Ford.  The shuttle takes over an hour\, so non-drivers should plan to relax\, hike to Smith Falls\, and/or birdwatch at the campground while the drivers are driving. We will verify the 9 am shuttle start on Saturday night. Sunny Brook Camp charges for parked cars and launch.  Fee was $10 in years past\, but may be more these days.  Bring cash.  Snacks may be available for purchase as well. \nSunday evening: Informal group happy hour possible\, but no specific group activity planned. \nCamping\nThe campground at Smith Falls State Park doesn’t open until early May  and there is no official group site.   We used to have the campground to ourselves but in recent years\, it has gotten more crowded. The campground was reconfigured for 2021\, adding more sites and mixing the use between tents and RVs in all sites. You can make reservations now – here’s the link to the on-line camping reservations https://nebraskastateparks.reserveamerica.com \nYou can also call the park for reservations (402) 376-1306) but your best bet is on-line. The camping cost is $54.40 for three nights\, plus a day use fee.  Check-in time is 4 p.m. and by then the Ranger Station may be closed.  Your trip coordinator will be in Site 23.  Sites can accommodate a trailer/camper and a tent or two tents. \nNote: Directions to Cornell Bridge from Valentine:  Take Nebraska 12 east about 4 miles to the Ft Niobrara Wildlife refuge turn-off. Turn right towards the river and then make the first right into the access parking lot. Be there by 10 am ready to shuttle and be sure to purchase your $1 wristband at the kiosk. \nPaddle Craft\nWe will have a mixture of paddle craft\, but most are canoes.  As of March 13\, we have 24 boats.  We will divide into at least two groups. \nCoordinators\nTo join this trip contact Leslie Copeland Taylor at lesliecopelandt@gmail.com.  You will go on a wait list.  Someone who reserved a campsite may not be able to make it and be willing to sell you his or her spot. DESCRIPTION:June 13\, 2026\nThe Rocky Mountain Sea Kayak Club (RMSKC) has scheduled its traditional Paddlefest Potluck at the Marina Point Group Shelter. This year will be a joint event with RMCC because RMSKC is disbanding and many of its members are joining RMCC. This is an opportunity to welcome new kayaking members and paddle on the reservoir. RMSKC let each other try out boats on Chatfield Reservoir. Bring your canoes and duckies and such to introduce your favorite boats to sea kayakers.  Marina Point group picnic area is located west of the South Boat Ramp area. We need folks on the water to keep track of paddlers and make sure all get back to the put in. \nSafe Paddling Guidelines \nLake Chatfield has many power boats and waves can build up.  However\, there are No Wake zones.  We will stay in the No Wake zones when possible and call this a flat-water event. Depending on water level\, we usually can launch boats on the beach near Marina Point Group Shelter. The paddle plan is to head south to the No Wake Zone and toward the Gravel Pond and upstream the South Platte River until it is time to turn around.  Please do not paddle alone.  Form a pod and stay with your group. SUMMARY:Grand Teton National Park Camp and Paddle 2026
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nThis is a group camping trip with day paddles on lakes and rivers in Grand Teton National Park.  The Group #8 campsite\, Coulter Bay Campground Road\, has a maximum of 25 people.  Tents and a few smaller RVs will fit\, but people are asked to carpool with two sets of saddles\, please. \nHard shell kayaks are best\, but other craft may work depending on the weather and where you are paddling.  Hiking opportunities also abound. Members from Rocky Mountain Sea Kayak Club and the Houston Association of Sea Kayakers will join RMCC members on this trip.  Everyone must be current annual ACA members.  Event ACA Memberships/Waivers not allowed. \nDaily Plans:\nOnce at the campground we will meet in the evening and plan who paddles where when the next day.  Participants need to arrive having read Paddling Yellowstone and the Tetons and have ideas about where they want to paddle. \nCampsite Costs:\nContact Sue Hughes (suehughes@yahoo.com) and make arrangement to pay by Venmo or check.  The cost is $121 ($17 a night with tax).  You will not be registered until you have paid. \nOther costs:\nYou’ll need a Wyoming AIS decal\, which can be obtained online for $15 for nonresidents.  You will also need to get a Tetons non-motorized boat permit for $25.  They can be ordered online at rec.gov which is so much better than having to get to the park early enough to get one in person the day before our first paddle.
