SUMMARY:Powell Houseboat from Bullfrog into the Escalante Arm
DESCRIPTION:THIS TRIP IS FULL AND A WAITING LIST HAS BEEN STARTED. Please contact Karen Amundson at canoekarena@msn.com if you want to be added to the waiting list. \nOctober 9-18 (Thursday-Saturday) – Class I-II.  Arrive at the Bullfrog Basin Campground or Defiance House Lodge (or your choice) late afternoon on October 8 and be ready to launch at the Bullfrog Marina by mid-morning of the 9th.  Ideally we will camp at 4 or 5 locations\, usually for 2 nights per camp.  We plan to explore on foot and/or paddle all of the accessible canyons in the Escalante Arm and do another 3-4 more side canyons off of the main Powell lake.  We will find petroglyphs\, Indian ruins\, waterfalls\, slot canyons\, and more. \nWe will go from 1 camp to the next on a 53’ Adventurer houseboat as it has an angled upper deck upon which we can slide our kayaks up and down.  Due to this boat stashing and also due to weather considerations (can get big winds and waves especially on the wider parts of the lake) we will limit boats to those that weigh less than about 60 pounds\, and want to have skirted sea kayaks or decked canoes.  Contact Karen for questions about your boat.  Class I-II due to waves caused by wind and/or speed boats.  Also\, landings can be scarce. \nThe trip will be limited to 10 people and a waiting list.  But it will be priced for 8 people with a likely refund of 20-25% assuming we do not lose people near when the trip starts and do not damage the houseboat.  A per person price of $620 will cover houseboat rental\, gas\, insurance\, and a few small items.  Post trip refund will be around $100 if all goes well.  We plan to have 2 people fixing dinner for the whole group each of the 1st 5 nights of the trip\, and then do smaller groups after that.  On your own for breakfasts and lunches.   \nThe houseboat has 2 “staterooms”\, a big upper deck\, small front and back decks\, and a lower bunk room that is usually used for storage for a few people who want to camp on shore.  Available camps vary depending on lake water levels and how many boats are already parked or searching the area.  Shore camping also varies.  The boat has a nice kitchen with a big grill\, oven and 2 refrigerators.  Carol\, Werner\, and Karen have experience with driving/parking the big boat\, and took the Houseboat 101 class. \nContact Karen Amundson at canoekarena@msn.com for further information and to join the trip or be on the Wait List.

SUMMARY:Rio Chama NM
DESCRIPTION:RMCC members drew a winning number in the Chama lottery this year\, and so we have a launch permit for July 13 for up to 16 paddlers. 5 slots are still open. Here’s a link to the BLM site:https://www.blm.gov/programs/recreation/permits-and-passes/lotteries-and-permit-systems/new-mexico/rio-chama-river \n  \nThis is a beautiful and challenging two night run with big rapids. \nWe’ll assemble at 8am on Friday the 13th to check in (and pay the $5/person BLM fee)\, rig and start the shuttle. We should be on the river by late morning. Just Class I-II on Friday\, then a number of Class III drops on Saturday and Sunday. We should finish early afternoon on Sunday. \n  \nThe drive from Denver to the put-in 342 miles (about 6 hours). The drive from the put-in to the take-out is about 56 miles (1.5 hours) each way. You can camp Friday night at the commercial campground below the dam (at the put-in) or up on the reservoir in the state park. \n  \nThe flow of the Rio Chama (a tributary of the Rio Grande) is controlled by the El Vado dam and they target at least 500 cfs during spring and summer weekends. BLM suggests a minimum of 300 cfs for canoes and kayaks. Flow on the weekend of June 15th was 750 cfs (and the historical average is 700 cfs). However\, of course the southwest is in extreme drought and there’s no guarantee we’ll get a target release on our weekend. The best we can do is to check it on the two preceeding weekends and call the BLM/and or El Vado dam on the week of our departure (which I’ll do). \n  \nContact Bill Ashworth (washwort@gmail.com) for more information or to sign-up. Canoes and kayaks welcome\, but strong Class III skills required

SUMMARY:Arkansas River: Salida area
DESCRIPTION:Explore the beautiful Arkansas River near Salida through 2 individual day trips ranging from 6-10 miles a day through class II and III water. Although some of the rapids having long continuous sections\, this will not be the classic/bigger rafting/kayaking sections. Exact itinerary and paddling plan to be decided close to trip dates; dependent on water flows and weather. Participants can choose to paddle any or all four days. Fees include a $3 per day river permit. Please contact Lyn Berry at ted7cp@gmail.com  or  (719)395-3887 if you are interested in this trip.

SUMMARY:San Rafael River: north of I-70 or Dolores\, Utah
DESCRIPTION:(THIS TRIP IS FULL AND A WAITING LIST HAS BEEN STARTED.) \nThe San Rafael Class II (due to possible strainers/obstacles and remoteness) section of just 18 miles will be spread across 3 days to maximize hiking to petroglyphs\, ruins\, and petrified logs; also to finish in time to return to the Front Range on Sunday. Note that this river only runs once 5 reservoirs fill up and that is hard to predict\, but watch  http://www.ewcd.org/reservoirs/teacup-diagram/ ; I figure a 30% chance for this date/year. \nLow/high/no water backup plan will be to do the Dolores River from Gateway to Dewey Bridge – 30 miles with several class III’s\, or 21  with only 2 class II’s if we put in below the State Line Rapid which is a mile long portage.  We’d arrange to have 1 car there to help with the big portage.  There are 3 nice hikes (Grand Canyon caliber per the guide) in this unpopulated canyon with 80% chance of flow for this date/year.  Limit is 5 drivers due to a 5+ hour shuttle with Carol/Werner offering to bring 2 cars and do the after-shuttle a day after the trip. To get on the waiting list for this trip contact Karen Amundson at canoekarena@msn.com. \n

SUMMARY:San Juan River\, UT - Mexican Hat to Clay Hills
DESCRIPTION:This Class I-II (and a III+) paddling of 56 miles in SE Utah includes beautiful canyons and 4 interesting side hikes up the Honaker Trail (1200’ of gain) to the canyon rim\, along Jones Canyon (a short technical hike/climb)\, up Slickrock Canyon with its lovely swimming pools and fossils\, and into the picturesque Oljeto Wash.  The class III+ Government Rapid can be portaged\, lined\, and/or run based on water levels and paddlers’ skills.  Limit 12 people (per Bill A’s permit) to be signed up by July 1 so that we can get the best campsites reserved for the last 2 nights.  We will pay the BLM $20/person and the Navajo Nation $5 for 1 day of south side hiking.  While this section is often done in 5 days\, we will take 6 to maximize hiking and also relaxing in camp. \nContact Karen Amundson (canoekarena@msn.com) with questions or to sign up! \nThis is an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a $5/person ACA fee. \n
