DESCRIPTION:Class is currently full.  A Waitlist has been started.   \nThis class is for solo (1-person) and tandem (2-person) canoes. \nThe cost is $35 per person for the first day of class.  The 2nd day of class is FREE! \n*If you are not a current American Canoe Association (ACA) member\, there is an additional $10 insurance fee; if you are a current ACA member please provide that number to the class instructors. \nStudents can enroll for only the flatwater day if they desire. \nLead instructors are Debbie Hinde and Ken Hilt. \nPlease register by emailing Debbie Hinde at dhinde1@msn.com.  \nDay 1 of the class will be held at Prospect Park Lake in Wheat Ridge. \nDay 2 of the class location depends on the water level and will be announced a couple of weeks before the class.  We intend it to be in the Denver area. \nMaximum number of boats is eight for the flatwater day and four per session (see below) on the moving water day. \nWe will start a waitlist if necessary. \nEssentials of Canoeing Part I: Flatwater   \nSaturday\, May 9\, 2026   9:00 am – 3:00 pm \nWe will cover canoe equipment\, boat outfitting\, strokes\, water safety\, and basic maneuvering. Fun\, dynamic drills and games will help you learn basic skills for moving the canoe as efficiently as possible using the following strokes: forward and backward strokes\, sweeps\, draws\, pries\, and the J stroke.\nMaximum number of boats for this class is eight. \nEssentials of Canoeing Part II: Moving Water  (Prerequisite: Flatwater class or verified experience) \nSunday\, May 10\, 2026: Two sessions: 8:00 am – 12:00 pm  OR  1:00 pm – 5:00 pm \nTake your flatwater skills on to moving water on Day 2 where you will learn skills for paddling in a Class I (easy) section of river. Skills will include “reading” water\, safety considerations on moving water\, applying canoe strokes for specific maneuvers including ferries\, eddy turns\, peel-outs\, C-Turns and S-turns.\nThis class will be held in on a river near the Denver area. DESCRIPTION:The Contact for Registration is at the bottom of this post! \nCourse Description:  \nLearn how to improve your whitewater canoeing technique in this two-day class. Perfect for advanced beginners or intermediate canoeists with some experience on whitewater. The class is open to both solo and tandem canoeists. Canoes must be outfitted for whitewater and have flotation. Paddlers must be able to kneel. Thigh straps or bulkheads are highly recommended. Paddlers must have a drysuit or wet suit (water will be cold in April). This course will be taught by American Canoe Association (ACA) certified canoe instructors. \nLocation: \nApril 26 – Big Soda Lake\, Bear Creek Park\, Morrison\, CO. \nApril 27 – River location to be determined. Most likely will be Clear Creek in Golden. \nCost: \nSolo \n$150 for ACA members\n$160 for non-ACA members \nTandem (for both participants) \n$200 For ACA members\n$220 for non-ACA members \nAGENDA – What to expect \nSaturday – 8:00 – 5:00 –  We will be paddling on flatwater and stay in one spot all day. We will work on strokes\, basic maneuvers\, and other keys for efficient paddling. We may do some in-water techniques. Expect high temperatures in the 60s\, and lows in the high 40s. Water will be cold. \nSunday – 8:00 -5:00 – We will be on the river\, up to Class 2. Most likely we will be on Clear Creek in Golden depending on water levels.
