SUMMARY:Yampa River:  South Beach to Duffy Mountain
DESCRIPTION:May 4-5\, 2026    Flatwater/Class I Canoe Camping\nCanceled because of low water.\nCoordinator:  Dan Custer:  custer.dan@gmail.com\nGood Beginner Float\nThe South Beach to Duffy Mountain Stretch of the Yampa is an easy flatwater/Class I trip.  Early May is a good time to float the Yampa because the bugs should not be a problem\, we expect little competition for campsites\, and usually the water level is good.  Fingers crossed on water level this year. \nThis is an easy trip for people new to canoeing and canoe camping.  Pack a warm sleeping bag because the mornings can be frosty.  A headwind is guaranteed and it could be very strong. \nOn day one we float through private ranch land where we expect to see the eagle nests and perhaps hear baby eagles.  The second day we will paddle through BLM land and Little Yampa Canyon\, which is more scenic but with fewer eagle nests. \nCamping\nThis stretch has about a half dozen improved campsites.  Improved means a table and a fire ring.  We are likely to camp on a large island inside BLM land without improvements.  The trip could be run in one long day\, but your coordinator likes it as a two-day trip. Takeout is expected to be around 2 or 3 in the afternoon of the second day.  Much of the drive back to Denver is in day light. \nState Park Pass Required\nProvided we get approval from Yampa State Park office\, we can camp at the put-in\, South Beach\, the night before launching.  There is no fee to camp at South Beach\, but everyone will need to either have an annual state park pass for their vehicle\, or purchase day passes at headquarters at 6185 W. US Hwy. 40\, Hayden\, CO 81639.  State Park passes are also needed for parking while we are on the river.  Both the put-in and the take-out are managed by Yampa River State Park.  Both have pit toilets.  While on the river\, we will have to pack out our waste.  Wag bags are allowed\, but we will probably use a groover.  If you prefer not to camp the night before we launch\, there are motel rooms in Craig\, CO\, about 10- or 15-minutes from the put-in. \nYou will prepare your own meals. \nBoat types:\nCanoe and decked kayaks are preferred.  No pack rafts.  Inflatables are allowed if the paddler can handle a strong head wind. \nPaddler limit:\nThe trip is full at 15 paddlers. \nACA Waivers Required\nThis will be an ACA insured trip.  Current ACA members are covered\, but non-ACA folks will need to sign an event waiver and pay a $10 insurance fee either online or in cash at the put in.  The ACA has a new system for electronic waivers.  Let’s give it a try.   When doing the on-line waiver use the event name:  Yampa River.  Use the date:  May 4\, 2026. SUMMARY:Colorado River: Moab Bridge Boat Launch to Potash Ramp
DESCRIPTION:May 10-13\, 2026.  Enjoy three nights of camping at Gold Bar Group A site and two days of paddling down beautiful Colorado Class 1 waters.    Trip Coordinator is Karen A assisted by Janet Mallory\, a local expert who knows hikes\, petroglyph sites and the river quite well.  Hard-sided boats preferred.  Talk with Karen if you paddle a duckie or other inflatable. \nSunday May 10 – Be at Gold Bar Group A site at noon or later.  There is a shelter and room for tents and campers. SUMMARY:Niobrara River Memorial Day Weekend (FULL)
DESCRIPTION:THE TRADITION CONTINUES (and now it is FULL) \nThis is an easy\, kids-friendly class 1 river\, with our campground in the middle of the run.  Each day will be about 12 miles and about 4 hours. Canoes\, kayaks and inflatables are OK.  Please indicate what type boat and number of folks in the boat when you register.  A mixture of boat types means we will have to very intentional and careful to stay together.  We will be dividing ourselves into two or perhaps three paddling groups for safety.  As of March 13\, we have 24 boats registered and the trip is FULL. \nPremier scenic waterway\nThis beautiful stretch is one of America’s premier scenic heritage waterways; we’ll see many waterfalls\, beautiful hardwood forests\, and birds!  And the resident buffalo herd at the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (https://www.fws.gov/refuge/fort_niobrara/ ) often has calves this time of year.  We float the river on Saturday and Sunday. Most will car camp at Smith Falls State Park\, Friday – Sunday nights; return to the Front Range after breakfast on Monday (about a 6-7 hour drive back to Denver) or continue to see the sights of Nebraska or head up to South Dakota. Some folks may continue camping at Merritt Reservoir before heading home.  Keep an eye on the calendar for details. \nMemorial Day is shoulder season in the Sand Hills of Nebraska and we often have rain on parts of one or more days. \nNiobrara River Trail description here . \nDescription from Backpacker magazine:  http://www.backpacker.com/stories/paddle-nebraska-s-niobrara-river \nRiver gage at https://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=06461500.  We generally run it at between 1000 and 2000 cfs. \nFloat Plan\nSaturday\, we’ll meet at 9am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the Cornell Bridge put-in near Valentine\, down to the Smith Falls State Park campground and beach the canoes/kayaks\, and then start from there again on Sunday.   If you are not camping\, but meeting us in the morning\, see the note\, below for directions.  Bring dollars in cash to purchase wristband for each paddler. \nSaturday evening – Optional potluck dinner organized by Gay Lynn Olsen. We have reserved the large group shelter in case of rain.  Bring your own plates and cutlery plus some cash (less than $5 each) to share the cost of the shelter. \nSunday\, we’ll meet near the boat ramp (where we took out on Saturday) at 9 am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the campground to the take-out – probably at Sunny Brook Camp\, about a mile upstream of Rocky Ford.  The shuttle takes over an hour\, so non-drivers should plan to relax\, hike to Smith Falls\, and/or birdwatch at the campground while the drivers are driving. We will verify the 9 am shuttle start on Saturday night. Sunny Brook Camp charges for parked cars and launch.  Fee was $10 in years past\, but may be more these days.  Bring cash.  Snacks may be available for purchase as well. \nSunday evening: Informal group happy hour possible\, but no specific group activity planned. \nCamping\nThe campground at Smith Falls State Park doesn’t open until early May  and there is no official group site.   We used to have the campground to ourselves but in recent years\, it has gotten more crowded. The campground was reconfigured for 2021\, adding more sites and mixing the use between tents and RVs in all sites. You can make reservations now – here’s the link to the on-line camping reservations https://nebraskastateparks.reserveamerica.com \nYou can also call the park for reservations (402) 376-1306) but your best bet is on-line. The camping cost is $54.40 for three nights\, plus a day use fee.  Check-in time is 4 p.m. and by then the Ranger Station may be closed.  Your trip coordinator will be in Site 23.  Sites can accommodate a trailer/camper and a tent or two tents. \nNote: Directions to Cornell Bridge from Valentine:  Take Nebraska 12 east about 4 miles to the Ft Niobrara Wildlife refuge turn-off. Turn right towards the river and then make the first right into the access parking lot. SUMMARY:San Juan River from near confluence with Navajo River / Class 1+ day paddles
DESCRIPTION:Dates:  June 6 – June 8\, 2026\nJune 5 – Camp in the Navajo State Park CO at the Arbole Point Campground in the  small group sites #1 or #2 at 1pm or later.  Early people may want to paddle on Navajo Reservoir from the campsite to the mouth of the Piedras River and to the mouth of the San Juan River if time and weather permits.  Trip leader and a few people will be coming here from the Montezuma Creek to Sand Island trip and will likely arrive sometime in the evening. \nJune 6 – Shuttle cars and put-in upstream on the San Juan River 1 mile past the Juanita Road bridge.  Paddle the 15 or so miles to our chosen takeout which is the Cottonwood access (in the State Park).  Sea kayakers may paddle an additional 6+ miles to our campground on the lake if they want.  Complete the shuttle and return to camp. \nJune 7 – Shuttle cars and put-in upstream on the Piedra River about 4 miles above the USFS 613 bridge (aka hwy 193).  Paddle about 9 miles to the early takeout which is the Day Use area within the CO Navajo Reservoir State Park.  Those willing to handle some wind and lake waves can continue 2 miles to where the lake starts and another 1.5 miles to the Windsurf Beach Campground as it is the closest lake takeout. \nJune 8 – Sea kayakers could paddle from our Arboles Point Campground out into Navajo Reservoir and explore a side canyon or 2.  Canoers may opt to repeat the Piedra or San Juan paddle (below the Ute waters and into the lake) or find a hiking trail or visit Chimney Rock.  Evacuate the campsites by noon. \n(Still deciding if we will get 3 or 4 nights at Arboles Point\, so June 9 – Evacuate the campsites by noon may not be an option.) \nNote that you will need a Colorado State Park pass or need to pay the entry fee daily.  Each camp site provides for up to 8 people\, 4 vehicles\, and 1 camping unit (like a popup); primitive\, so no water or electricity but there are toilets.  Therefore we will split the $20/night camping fee for 3 or 4 nights among the number of people that we have.   The first 2 days require Southern Ute fishing licenses ($20) or guest licenses ($5\, max 1:1).  Due to the exploratory nature of this trip and the site limits we will hold it to 10 or 12 people max. \nContact Karen A. at canoekarena@msn.com to sign up.  Note that we want at least 300 or 400cfs for this trip and it may be cancelled or shifted to lake paddling only if it is too little water for our nice boats.  Prefer canoes and sea kayaks; talk to Karen if you have something else. \nACA Waivers\nIf you are a current ACA member as of June 5\, 2026 you are all set.  The ACA has a new system for online Event Membership/Waivers for those who are not annual members. \nWhen doing the on-line waiver use the event name:  Abole Point.  Use the date:  June 7-8\, 2026.   If you are not an ACA member and want to pay at the put in\, you can sign an Event Waiver online using this link:  https://aca.sport80.com/public/wizard/a/1370/home.  This wizard will have you create an account with the ACA without becoming a full-fledged ACA member.   This waiver will not collect the $10 fee in advance.  If you want to create an Event Waiver and pay the fee directly to the ACA\, use this link:  https://aca.sport80.com/public/wizard/a/1371/home. Depending on water level\, we usually can launch boats on the beach near Marina Point Group Shelter. The paddle plan is to head south to the No Wake Zone and toward the Gravel Pond and upstream the South Platte River until it is time to turn around.  Please do not paddle alone.  Form a pod and stay with your group. SUMMARY:Flaming Gorge Self-Supported Paddling Trip
DESCRIPTION:Overview: This is a wonderful outing that starts in the town of Green River\, WY on the Green River.  After about 10 miles on the river\, we enter Flaming Gorge Reservoir and paddle south ending at the dam in Utah.  We did this trip in 2023 in 6 days but are planning 8 days to allow for weather and/or additional exploration.  The landscape in the north is open\, rolling hills typical of Wyoming.  As we approach Utah\, we begin the passage thru rocks and cliffs.  We will paddle sea kayaks. \nNote that there are access points on the west side of the lake where people can exit in the event that folks want a shorter trip.  These access points are about a day’s paddle apart\, beginning after 3-4 days: \n (1) Buckboard Marina; (2) Brinegar (aka Holmes) Crossing; (3) Anvil Draw; (4) Lucerne \nOrganizers: Gary Cage (gary_cage@greenspeedisp.net) and Anne Fiore (anne_fiore@yahoo.com) \nDates: Drive to Flaming Gorge on Friday\, July 10th.  Put in at Green River WY on Saturday\, July 11th.  Plan to take out at the dam by Sunday\, July 19th dam at the latest. \nDistance: 80+ miles; Rating: Class 1 and flatwater \nWind and Waves!  Flaming Gorge can get pretty windy!  Although we keep an eye on the weather and do not plan to paddle in high wind\, it is often necessary to paddle for an hour or so in moderate winds (8 mph – 12 mph) to a good campsite. \nEarly Starts\, depending on weather: In 2022 and 2023\, a strong wind came up by noon.  Given this\, we plan to be on the water by 7 AM and paddle till noon or so (when the wind starts up)\, so up to 5 hours of paddling.  Makes for a long afternoon in the sun but we beat the wind.  However\, if it appears the wind is not coming up till mid afternoon or later\, we’ll go with a later start. \nShort breaks: We tend to take only short breaks while paddling\, including short lunch breaks. \nSelf-Shuttle: We would drive to Flaming Gorge on Friday\, July 11th.  On Saturday\, July 12th\, we would meet at the dam to leave a car there then drive to the put-in at Stratton-Meyers Park in Green River.  Once all gear is unloaded\, there will be the need to drive back to Buckboard to leave a car then drive back to Green River\, leaving one car at Smith’s Grocery\, less than a mile away from the put-in.  After 2 nights\, we will take a break at Buckboard and run a shuttle back to Smith’s to get cars parked there.  They will be left at Buckboard for the remainder of the trip. \nInspections: Wyoming AIS Stickers\, Utah AIS certificate\, and WY inspection. \nACA: Since this is a Rocky Mountain Canoe Club trip\, ACA membership (annual or event) is required. \nOther Hazards: Rattlesnakes!   \nMaps:  Trails Illustrated #704 (Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. \nHuman Waste: We need to carry out our own waste. \nSafe Paddling\nTo keep our events both fun and safe for everyone\, each participant needs to have the skills and the equipment appropriate to the waters and the weather.  Each participant is the first judge of whether they have the skills and equipment necessary\, but trip coordinators have the final say. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 17 to Sunday July 19\, 2026\nThis is our annual event moved up to July instead of our usual August dates. \nRadium Campground Group Site B is reserved from July 17 to July 19.  Group Site A is reserved from July 17 to July 20 for those folks who want to leave on Monday.  For those that haven’t attended this event before\, our Club Rendezvous is a fun filled weekend near the head waters of the Colorado River with wonderful day paddling trips and many social activities that provide great opportunities to meet and bond with fellow club members.  For many\, this is a real season highlight. \n\n\n\nWe hope to be on the water Friday through Monday — water\, weather and boaters willing.  A revised flyer will be available soon with more details. \n\nNote: this is a dry camp so there is NO WATER and NO ELECTRIC hookups at camp sites.  Make sure to bring adequate water for your needs and have all your devices charged up\, although a solar powered camper van can provide a charge up if needed.\n\nIt is way too early to make any predictions about the expected flow during Rendezvous.  As always\, we’ll hope for reasonable water levels for fun and safe paddling for all abilities this year. Check the Colorado flows at Kremmling station for changes as you consider boating at Rendezvous. Class 1\, 2\,3 runs are expected.  Bring a helmet. \nRegistration is not required\, but it makes life much easier for the organizers! SUMMARY:Grand Teton National Park Camp and Paddle 2026
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nThis is a group camping trip with day paddles on lakes and rivers in Grand Teton National Park.  The Group #8 campsite\, Coulter Bay Campground Road\, has a maximum of 25 people.  Tents and a few smaller RVs will fit\, but people are asked to carpool with two sets of saddles\, please. \nHard shell kayaks are best\, but other craft may work depending on the weather and where you are paddling.  Hiking opportunities also abound. DESCRIPTION:This will be a joint trip with the Missouri Whitewater Association using the same format as last year.  Participants will camp three days at Turtle Rock Campground north of Buena Vista\, then cross the Continental Divide to the Taylor River to camp at Lottis Creek Campground.  Focus for day paddling will be Class II runs\, but some Class III routes are available. \nTentative Date\nAugust 16 – 22\, 2026   Group Campgrounds have not yet been booked. These are both group campgrounds and both campgrounds also have individual sites available.  Turtle Mountain has pit toilets but no water or electricity.  Lottis Creek has pit toilets\, potable water\, a large\, covered picnic shelter and some spots with electricity.  Both have spotty cell service. \nClass III runs are easily available at both venues\, and all are welcome to attend.  However\, the focus will be on Class II stretches.  On the Arkansas our choices will include the Milk Run\, Stone Bridge to Big Bend or Salida and the Fractions.  As of March\, water levels on the Arkansas are uncertain so choices will be somewhat water dependent.  Chris switched to the Arkansas first so we can take advantage of the last two days of artificial release.  The Taylor is always runnable. \nLast year\, and on all other trips Chris has conducted\, he valued the assistance of experienced paddlers to lead the smaller groups we will break into\, to provide safety and paddling tips to newer folks. The focus of the trip is to provide an opportunity to safely paddle class II water in the beautiful Colorado mountains and to get to know other like-minded paddlers.  Canoes\, kayaks and inflatables are all welcome. \nLast year we had about 30 participants. \nChris has not yet made campground reservations because he wants to get a sense of interest.  Chris encourages last year’s participants to add their own comments. \nPlease let Chris know if you are interested.  If anyone needs gear\, please let Chris know.  It is likely we can accommodate any reasonable need.  In terms of safety gear: everyone should have a Coast Guard approved PFD\, a helmet and floatation bags in the boats.  For those of you who know how to use it\, other safety and first aid gear is very welcome.  We may do some short safety drills but only if people are amenable. \nACA annual membership required\nThis is a club sponsored and American Canoe Association covered trip.  All participants must be paid up members of either the Missouri Whitewater Association or the Rocky Mountain Canoe Club and have a valid ACA number. Event waivers are not acceptable. \nGround rules\nChris has only two rules.  One\, Chris will designate a starting time in the morning and expect everyone to be ready to depart then.  Two\, if Chris or the on-the-water leader asks anyone to walk any rapid or reach\, the paddler is expected to comply.  On the river we will\, of course\, endeavor to paddle safely.  It is important that all members and guests read and follow our safe paddling guidelines. DESCRIPTION:Dates:  September 19-20\,2026\nClass I river float\nTrip Coordinators:\nSign up with Mark Flora (msfloramd@yahoo.com or msfloramd53@gmail.com) Mark is the pre-trip coordinator. \nOn-river Trip Coordinators are Mark Flora and Elaine O’Reilly. \nFloat Plan:\nMost paddlers will arrive in the area on Friday night.  No group campsite is arranged for Friday.  Options are to stay in motels in Fruita\, camp at Fruita State Park or the Colorado National Monument. \nSaturday September 19:  Meet at 8 a.m. at Loma boat ramp to off load all boats and river gear then start the shuttle to Westwater.  (Shuttlers follow I-70 west into Utah for 19.5 miles.  Take the Westwater Exit 227 and follow BLM 192 and 191 to Westwater Ranch Road for about 4.6 miles.) Non-drivers will rig the boats.  Launch from Loma around 11 a.m. \nWe will camp around 12 miles downstream\, landing between 3 and 4 p.m.  Sunday morning launch target is 9:30 a.m. We expect to arrive at Westwater BLM Ranger Station around noon on Sunday September 20\, 2026. \nPreferred craft:\nBoats suitable for Class 1 paddling\, such as solo or tandem canoes\, recreational\, river or sea kayaks.  Some ripples around Black Rock can splash some water kayaks without spray skirts. Check with your trip coordinators if you have concerns.  We currently plan to limit paddlers to 14 boats\, but if there is enough interest\, we may do another trip the same weekend or the next. \nGear:\nStandard overnight canoe camping gear and your own food.  Pack a little something to share for a late afternoon/early evening happy hour Saturday.  Carry human waste out. \nUtah regulations:\nTake the Utah Aquatic Invasive Species test online and put one copy of the certificate in your car and one in your boat.  Utah Division of Wildlife Resources – Online Exams \nACA Liability Insurance\nThis is a trip with ACA liability insurance.  If you are a current ACA member on September 20\, 2026\, you are all set. Non ACA members need to purchase an “Event Membership” and pay the ACA’s $10 fee. \nYou can print (NEW ACA WAIVER) in advance or fill out the form your trip coordinator has at the put in. Pay $10 cash or pay by check payable to the ACA to the trip coordinator before you get on the water.
