SUMMARY:Land Between the Lakes Sept. 14-18
DESCRIPTION:Exploration Paddle Trip\nCome and explore the Land Between the Lakes Paddle Trail along the shore and bays of the The Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area (LBL).  LBL is a 40-mile- long peninsula in western Kentucky and Tennessee between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley.  The Peninsula varies between one and nine miles wide and reaches over 171\,000 acres and 300 miles of shoreline.  It is approximately 1100 miles east of Denver.  The nearest significant city is Paducah\, KY\, 27 miles to the northwest. \nTrip Description\nThis will be a five-day trip (not including travel) from September 14 through September 18\, 2026\, with car camping and day paddles.  The base camp will be Hillman Ferry Campground located on Kentucky Lake near the north end of LBL.  It is a large campground with facilities for RVs and for also has tent sites and cabins.  It has potable water\, flush toilets and showers.  Campsite reservations can be made but should not be necessary at this time of year.  There is no entrance fee for LBL\, but there is a charge for camping.  The fee for camping\, as well as other activities in LBL are reduced for holders of the “America the Beautiful” and other passes.  Multi-day passes are also available.  For those who may want a break from paddling (or choose not to paddle at all)\, there are many miles of hiking and biking trails\, a planetarium with regular shows\, a restored 19th and early 20th century homestead\, and two Civil War battlefields to explore.  Fishing is popular on the lakes with the appropriate state license\, and the National Quilt Museum ia s located in Paducah\, a short distance west of the north entrance. \nConditions\nAverage temperatures at LBL in September are a high of 82 degrees and low of 57 degrees; average water temperature is 79 degrees.  The average September precipitation is 3.5 inches\, one of the lower precipitation months.  Because of the size of the lakes\, there may be windy conditions at times. \nPaddle Craft\nThe trip is intended for hard sided sea kayaks and canoes.  No registration is required for non-motorized boats. \nPaddle Plan\nEvery evening the group will plan the paddle trip(s) for the next day.  Depending on the size of the group\, we may decide to break into separate groups for trips of different lengths or to different destinations. \nMaps and Further Information\nFor a wealth of additional information about LBL\, go to the LBL website at www.landbetweenthelakes.us.  Especially look at the maps: “LBL North” and “LBL South.”  These maps may be downloaded to a mobile device for free on the Avenza Maps website.  You can also review the map of the Hillman Ferry Campsite.  The best map is available from Underwood Graphics:  ugeographics.com for $16.00 plus $2.50 mailing — large scale\, very detailed and printed on waterproof paper.  Another source is: Johnny Mallory\, Land Between the Lakes: Your Complete Guide for Hiking\, Fishing and Nature Study in Western Tennessee and Kentucky\, (Birmingham: Menasha Ridge Press\, 2016)\, which primarily addresses onshore activities\, but has twelve pages (27-38) devoted to canoeing and kayaking. \nTrip Coordinator\nGeorge Ottenhoff (new recruit for the Rocky Mountain Sea Kayak Club) \n970-397-0476 \nPlease contact George by July 31\, 2016 if you have interest in this trip.  Application deadline is August 15\, 2026. \nACA Insurance & Waivers\nThis will be an ACA liability insured trip.  If you are an annual ACA member in good standing on the dates of the paddle\, you are all set.  Otherwise\, you may execute an Event Waiver and become an Event Member for a $10 fee.  Only one Event Waiver per paddler is required for this multi-day event. You can secure an Event Waiver online up to a month ahead of time.  Online event waivers are good for 30 days. \nYou can print (NEW ACA WAIVER) in advance or fill out the form your trip coordinator has at the put in. Pay $10 cash or pay by check payable to the ACA to the trip coordinator before you get on the water. Minor waivers are at: AMERICAN CANOE ASSOCIATION\, INC \nWhen doing the on-line waiver use the event name: Land Between the Lakes. Use the date:  September 14-18\, 2026. DESCRIPTION:Dates:  September 19-20\,2026\nClass I river float\nTrip Coordinators:\nSign up with Mark Flora (msfloramd@yahoo.com or msfloramd53@gmail.com) Mark is the pre-trip coordinator. \nOn-river Trip Coordinators are Mark Flora and Elaine O’Reilly. \nFloat Plan:\nMost paddlers will arrive in the area on Friday night.  No group campsite is arranged for Friday.  Options are to stay in motels in Fruita\, camp at Fruita State Park or the Colorado National Monument. \nSaturday September 19:  Meet at 8 a.m. at Loma boat ramp to off load all boats and river gear then start the shuttle to Westwater.  (Shuttlers follow I-70 west into Utah for 19.5 miles.  Take the Westwater Exit 227 and follow BLM 192 and 191 to Westwater Ranch Road for about 4.6 miles.) Non-drivers will rig the boats.  Launch from Loma around 11 a.m. \nWe will camp around 12 miles downstream\, landing between 3 and 4 p.m.  Sunday morning launch target is 9:30 a.m. We expect to arrive at Westwater BLM Ranger Station around noon on Sunday September 20\, 2026. \nPreferred craft:\nBoats suitable for Class 1 paddling\, such as solo or tandem canoes\, recreational\, river or sea kayaks.  Some ripples around Black Rock can splash some water kayaks without spray skirts. Check with your trip coordinators if you have concerns.  We currently plan to limit paddlers to 14 boats\, but if there is enough interest\, we may do another trip the same weekend or the next. \nGear:\nStandard overnight canoe camping gear and your own food.  Pack a little something to share for a late afternoon/early evening happy hour Saturday.  Carry human waste out. \nUtah regulations:\nTake the Utah Aquatic Invasive Species test online and put one copy of the certificate in your car and one in your boat.  Utah Division of Wildlife Resources – Online Exams \nACA Liability Insurance\nThis is a trip with ACA liability insurance.  If you are a current ACA member on September 20\, 2026\, you are all set.
