SUMMARY:Rio Grande River from Colorado into NM
DESCRIPTION:This Class II+ combination of the Lasauses (19 miles) and Ute Mountain (25 miles) sections of the Rio Grande begins in the afternoon\, with easy water\, a quick camp and a likely hike in the Brownie Hills or Fairy Hills; then it goes thru 6 miles of low canyon after crossing highway 142 where it enters a 2 day heavy wildlife run with 22 class II rapids.  The 2nd section is not boatable until June due to governmental protection of young animal and bird life.  A side hike to lava formations and cultural (early Hispanic and Indian settlement) sites is planned.  The takeout involves a quarter mile 230’ climb up a primitive trail\, so VERY light canoes or packable inflatables are required\, along with extremely light loads.  We want at least 250cfs at the put-in.  But because the San Luis Valley farmers sometimes claim most of the water from the Rio Grande\, a backup plan for doing three day trips of the Lake Fork of the Gunnison\, San Juan near Pagosa (camp there 2 nights) and Conejos or Rio Grande near Wagon Wheel Gap will be developed to insure that we boat some interesting new territory.  Limit 10 paddlers for the Rio Grande (smaller camp sites) or 15 on the backup trio due to logistics. \nThis is an ACA-sanctioned event\, so current ACA membership or a $5 per person ACA fee is required. \nContact Karen Amundson (canoekarena@msn.com) if you are interested in this trip!

SUMMARY:San Rafael River Utah\, Little Grand Canyon (White River is backup)
DESCRIPTION:The San Rafael River Little Grand Canyon runs between the Fuller Bottom put-in and the Swinging Bridge campground\, north of I-70 and west of Green River\, UT.  This Class II (due to possible strainers/obstacles and remoteness) section of just 18 miles will be spread across 3 days to maximize hiking to petroglyphs\, ruins\, and petrified logs; also to finish in time to return to the Front Range on Monday (Memorial Day).  Note that this river only runs once 3 reservoirs fill up and that is hard to predict. \nThe low/high/no water backup plan will be to do the White River from Rangeley-or-Bonanza (depends on how high/fast the flows are\, so either 70 or 45 miles) to the Enron Wells takeout near the Utah line.  Best to take either tandem or fast solo boats to cover long daily paddles if we are on the White.  Highlights here include great geologic formations and buttes and the Goblin City hike.  Limit 12 paddlers due to smallish camping areas on the San Rafael\, or 15 on the White. \nThis is an ACA-sanctioned event\, so current ACA membership or a $5 per person ACA fee is required. \nContact Karen Amundson (canoekarena@msn.com) if interested!

SUMMARY:Niobrara River
DESCRIPTION:This will be an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a $5/person insurance fee. 5th annual Niobrara trip. Easy\, kids-friendly class 1 river\, with campground in the middle of the run. We’ll meet at noon on Saturday at the Cornell Bridge (see note) put-in near Valentine\, run on Saturday and Sunday. Car camping at Smith Falls State Park\, May 24-25\, Return to the Front Range after breakfast on Monday the 26th (about a 7 hour drive) or optional 3rd day on Class II lower run (Rocky Ford to Norden Bridge – helmets required). Niobrara River Trail description here \nThis beautiful stretch is one of America’s premier scenic heritage waterways; we’ll see many waterfalls and beautiful hardwood forests.  And the resident buffalo herd at the Niobrara Preserve often has calves this time of year. The campground doesn’t open until just before Memorial Day so advanced reservations may be difficult and aren’t really necessary.  Smith Falls State Park (402) 376-1306)\, $5/person/night. SUMMARY:Arkansas Day Trip - Florence to Pueblo Reservoir
DESCRIPTION:This class II day trip is about 20 miles (depending on which put-in and the lake level) of cold water and likely strainers\, so I am only taking more experienced paddlers (those who can come around a bend to find a strainer and quickly ferry the river to avoid it) on this initial exploratory club trip.  An early portage is probable\, and the takeout may involve an uphill hike.  We will camp 2 nights at Indian Springs Ranch Campground (elevation 5800 feet) near Penrose to be reserved by Karen 7 days before the trip.  Group rate is $10/person/night and they also have a pool and a 2 hour history-fossil tour ($10).  Camp hosts would give us the indoor pavilion for our music and maybe lefsa too!!  We want 350-800cfs and good weather or will postpone it to May 3rd.  If the trip goes well and strainers are rare/manageable\, it will be repeated in August for less experienced paddlers along with a higher elevation US Forest Service camp.  Limit 12 paddlers. \nThis is an ACA-sanctioned event\, so current membership in the ACA\, or a $5 per person ACA fee is required. \nContact Karen Amundson if you are interested in this day trip!
