SUMMARY:Day Paddle at Lagerman Reservoir on March 26th\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Lagerman Reservoir is a wonderful destination for a paddle.  Besides views of Longs Peak and the Front Range\, we will most likely be treated with a number of bird sightings including osprey.  And\, the west end of the reservoir is still open this week so we will be able to paddle into this closure area. \nWeather permitting\, we will meet at 10:30 AM and be ready to paddle at 11:00 or so. We should be off the lake before 2 pm. \n***RSVP required\, so that coordinator will know whom to contact if unpredictable spring weather  requires last minute cancellation.*** \nDirections:  Lagerman Reservoir is located between 63rd St and & 75th St (West of Longmont) and is south of Nelson Road and North of the Diagonal (hwy 119).  To get there\, take either 75th to Pike Rd\, then west on Pike to the entrance OR 63rd to Prospect\, east on Prospect which will wind around and become Pike then continue to the entrance.  There are signs for Lagerman on both 75th and 63rd.  Lagerman is a Boulder County Open Space property.  There is no entrance fee and there is a restroom. \nFYI:  This is an ACA- sanctioned trip and ACA membership OR $10 event fee required. RMCC  and ACA waivers required. \nLink to Google Maps Lagerman Reservoir · 7100 Pike Rd\, Longmont\, CO 80503 \nFor information and to sign up\, please contact Anne Fiore <anne_fiore@yahoo.com> \n\n  \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Planning and Permit Party and Potluck 1:30-5 pm In person. Virtual starts at 2:30
DESCRIPTION:We’ll gather in person at the Greenway Park Golf Course Clubhouse. Address: 110 Greenway Drive\nBroomfield\, Colorado 80020 + Google Map \nThis will be a party. It will be a chance to see old paddling friends and meet new ones as we chat about trips we’ve done and those we hope to do. Mingling will be strongly encouraged! We’ll have some maps to help visualize river locations and hopefully serve as conversation starters.  Aspiring co-coordinators can talk in person with potential collaborators or mentors. As a part of the “formal” portion of the party\, there will be some brief presentations of trip possibilities. \nThe potluck will include sweet or savory snacking type food. Feel free to bring finger food to share\, but you are welcome whether or not you bring something!. Remember to bring your own re-usable plates and utensils (we will have back ups if you forget). \n***We plan to have both a Freebie table and a Sale table for your “never again plan to use” items.   (See Dec. 22 post for details) \n***The few remaining Tshirts will be available for purchase. $15\, Cash or Check. There are 8 medium shirts\, one 2XL\, and one 3XL. \n***The canoe club lending library will  be set up to borrow or return books \n***Zoom link will be sent to members on Friday\, Jan. 10.  Virtual meeting will start at2:30. Much of the party will be informal in person socializing\, and this will not be conducive to virtual participation. Several days before the party\, members will receive a link to join via Zoom. Please note that the virtual portion of these meetings is always a challenge\, and issues are likely to arise. Patience is requested as we will do our best to enable virtual participation.

SUMMARY:New possibility! Green River\, Labyrinth and Stillwater Canyons. Oct. 2-11\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:In the planning stages. ~120 miles. 9 days of paddling\, 12-15 miles per day\, though this can change depending on conditions. Canoe camping experience required. Updated details will follow as they emerge! \nTo take advantage of Tex’s 25 % discount offer to club members\, we are considering this late season trip. Flexibility and a good attitude required! Late season weather is of course unpredictable\, as are river conditions and campsite availability. Paddlers must be prepared for these uncertainties.  Active participation is required. Campsites are neither designated nor certain to exist season to season. In this sense\, it will be an “exploratory ” trip.  We will likely want to carry all of our water\, though settling (with alum) and filtering is possible. Some side hikes are possible. A layover day is not planned\, but weather can always change that. \nPreliminary details:  launch at Crystal Springs or Ruby Ranch and take out at  the Confluence.  \nDay 1 would likely be around noon\, so that would be a short paddling day. And\, et boat pick up is in the morning of Oct. 11\, so that would not be a paddling day. That leaves 8 full days of paddling. And\, fall days bring darkness earlier\, so that needs to be considered.  \nContact Co-coordinators Brookie (brookiegal@gmail.com) and Lindsay (lindsayLmeeks@gmail.com) for more information or to sign up. \n

SUMMARY:Colorado River: Ruby/Horsethief Canyons Sun 9/29 - Mon 9/30
DESCRIPTION:Join RMCC as we paddle the Colorado River Sunday – Monday from Loma\, CO to the Westwater Station boat ramp in Utah through  Ruby and Horsethief Canyons . We’ll be camping at one of the larger sites on the river Sunday night – TBD. Our late September date should offer gorgeous fall color on the canyon bottom. This is an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a $10/person insurance fee. We will also split the campsite fee – estimated to be $5 or so depending on group size. Check out the trip flyer Loma to Westwater Sunday to Monday . This is an easy\, family-friendly Class I trip but check out the Club site for information for RMCC Boating Requirements and Recommendations. \nGroup Size Note: This trip is limited to 25 paddlers and often fills up fast. There was a large show of interest in the January survey so I will likely be starting a waitlist \nScheduling Note: if we are unable to secure a campsite for Sunday night\, the trip will move a day to Mon-Tues. \nContact Bill Ashworth to sign up or with questions at washwort at gmail.com. 720-352-6456

SUMMARY:Missouri Breaks -- Fall
DESCRIPTION:We are in the final planning stage for a fall Upper Missouri Breaks National Monument trip — September 17 – 26 with two days of driving on each end.  The trip length includes\, we hope\, multiple hikes with a couple layover days.  We plan to boat 108 miles from Coal Banks Landing (mile 41.5) to Kipps Recreation Area (mile 149) with options for adding 41 miles upstream (putting in at Fort Benton) or shortening by taking out at Judith Landing (mile 88.5).  Alternatives from our chosen route/timing would be yours to arrange/coordinate.  IN GENERAL — we intend this trip as a low key paddle with lots of stops/stays for hiking\, but if winds/weather are issues\, we may be getting on the river early. \nThis will be an ACA-sanctioned trip — ACA membership or $10 event fee required. \nThe GoogleDoc at   https://docs.google.com/document/d/1tMbiGBbNHwwxkb7HWWxB1oc_1ZPGoahtR7sIS6PdIPg/edit  includes general information and some planning particulars (e.g.\, shuttles\, costs\, potential hikes and camps)\nContact Kathryn Mutz at (gvmutz at gmail.com) AFTER you read the GoogleDoc if you have questions or are interested.  We will limit the trip to about 10 boaters.

Probably a step down from Stillwater\, but on a par with Labyrinth. For those who have done Stillwater Canyon of the Green River\, Meander Canyon is the canyon the jet boat travels to bring people back up to Moab from Spanish Bottom following a Stillwater Canyon trip. We will see petrified logs\, petroglyphs\, and ruins. \nAn advantage of a Meander Canyon trip is the jet boat can pick you up just about anywhere on the river that the water is deep enough for the jet boat.  So\, mileage can be adjustable. \nRandy Purrett (purrettrandall2@outlook.com) and Karen Amundson (canoekarena@msn.com) are co-coordinating the trip. (Shuttle reservations need to be made by May 31.) \nContact Randy and Karen for more information.

SUMMARY:Colorado River: Cisco Landing to Lower Onion Creek. August 24\, 25\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Floating the Colorado River doesn’t get much easier than this!\n\n     Saturday morning we’ll gather at the Dewey Bridge Campground boat ramp 32 miles east of Moab via UT128\, drive up-river from there to the put-in at Cisco Landing & paddle a flatwater\, somewhat remote 16-mile section of the Colorado River thru desert and ranchland back to Dewey Bridge.\n\n     Sunday morning we’ll launch at Dewey Bridge to enjoy 8 miles of  Class I water thru spectacular red rock canyons as we paddle to the take-out at Lower Onion Creek Campground. As an option\, some paddlers may want to continue downriver & paddle the “Moab Daily” section before leaving the river. Beyond Lower Onion Creek the rapids will likely be Class II to II+ with helmets required.\n\n     Plan to car camp Friday & Saturday nights either at Dewey Bridge Campground or in the vicinity. SUMMARY:Lewis River into Shoshone Lake\, Grand Teton National Park. July 13-15
DESCRIPTION:     We intend to paddle  through Lewis Lake and up the Lewis River into Shoshone Lake. Starting EARLY on July 13\, we will camp on Shoshone Lake on the 13th and the 14th. On the 14th\, we will do a day trip over to the Shoshone Geyser Basin. We will paddle out on the 15th or we can possibly stay a third night at a first come first serve first serve site and paddle out July 16.  \n     The first day will be about 10 miles of paddling\, which includes probably pulling the boats up the top third of the Shoshone River(about a mile). It should be a pretty easy pull through shallow water. \n     There is a Wyoming requirement to have your boat inspected. That can be done either at Grant or Lewis Lake seven days a week but would need to be done on the 12th so we could leave early on the 13th. \n     This is an ACA sanctioned trip. Participants must be current ACA members (and have a current signed annual waiver) OR pay a $10 ACA event fee and sign a waiver. \nPlease let us know if you are interested or have any questions. \nChris Kelly \ncskelly1022@gmail.com

SUMMARY:RMCC North Platte - Saratoga to I-80. June 7-9\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Paddling the North Platte River in Wyoming from Saratoga\, WY to I80\, will be a two night – three day trip. A maximum of 12-13 people can go on the trip as the 2nd campsite is a private one and limited in space. It is a lot nicer than the BLM site across the river. I will also leave on Thursday afternoon to get a campsite for us at Pick Bridge since it is a popular site. Anyone who can go and help me with that would be a big help. I have planned the trip for early June as the river drops faster the later the trip. Good paddling skills and maneuvering ability are needed as there are rocks\, etc. and on the last day (Sunday)  there is a rancher’s irrigation set up that will needed to be scouted which can be the hardest part if the water is not high enough. We will also stop at the Oregon trail Cemetery on Saturday and hike up to see it.  Once I have the list of people going\, I will send out more detailed information. \nYour craft will need a Wyoming permit and to be inspected at a Wyoming inspection site for invasive water species. We also have a 1.5 hour each way shuttle from the put in to the take out. I need to have everyone there early enough to run the shuttle. For those who can come on Thursday afternoon\, it’s possible we can move a few vehicles then. We will work this out. At the put in and takeout\, we will put a paper plate with RMCC on it so the police can keep an eye on the vehicles. I made arrangements last time with the Carbondale County police to keep an eye on our vehicles. I have never had problems but extra eyes don’t hurt. \nJudy Moisey Asay \ncanoeingIT@GMAIL.com

SUMMARY:Niobrara River Memorial Day - MAY 24 -MAY 27
DESCRIPTION:TRIP IS FULL BUT THERE IS A WAIT LIST \nThis will be an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a $10/person insurance fee.  This is an easy\, kids-friendly class 1 river\, with our campground in the middle of the run.  Each day will be about 12 miles and about 4 hours. For more information about skill level and equipment information\, see RMCC Boating Requirements and Recommendations. \nThis beautiful stretch is one of America’s premier scenic heritage waterways; we’ll see many waterfalls\, beautiful hardwood forests\, and birds!  And the resident buffalo herd at the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (https://www.fws.gov/refuge/fort_niobrara/ ) often has calves this time of year.  We run the river on Saturday and Sunday. Most will car camp at Smith Falls State Park\, Friday – Sunday nights; return to the Front Range after breakfast on Monday (about a 6-7 hour drive back to Denver) or continue to see the sights of Nebraska or head up to South Dakota. \nMemorial Day is shoulder season in the Sand Hills of Nebraska and we often have rain on parts of one or more days.  \nNiobrara River Trail description here .  \nDescription from Backpacker magazine:  http://www.backpacker.com/stories/paddle-nebraska-s-niobrara-river \nRiver gage at https://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=06461500.  We generally run it at between 1000 and 2000 cfs. \nSaturday\, we’ll meet at 10am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the Cornell Bridge put-in near Valentine\, down to the Smith Falls State Park campground and beach the canoes\, and then start from there again on Sunday.   If you are not camping\, but meeting us in the morning\, see the note\, below for directions. \nSaturday evening – optional potluck dinner at one of the convenient campsites.  There is a large group shelter generally available in case of rain. \nSunday\, we’ll meet near the boat ramp (where we took out on Saturday) at 10am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the campground to the take-out – probably at Sunny Brook Camp\, about a mile upstream of Rocky Ford.  The shuttle takes over an hour\, so non-drivers should plan to relax\, hike to Smith Falls\, and/or birdwatch at the campground while the drivers are driving. We will verify the 10am shuttle start on Saturday night. \nSunday evening: Informal group happy hour possible\, but no specific group activity planned.  Some of us will be checking out (i.e.\, scouting\, not running) the Norden chute and going to the The Nature Conservancy Niobrara Valley Preserve near there) (https://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/nebraska/placesweprotect/niobrara-valley-preserve.xml  \nCamping \nThe campground at Smith Falls State Park doesn’t open until early May  and there is no official group site.   We used to have the campground to ourselves but in recent years\, its gotten more crowded. The campground was reconfigured for 2021\, adding more sites and mixing the use between tents and RVs in all sites. You can make reservations now – here’s the link to the on-line camping reservations  https://nebraskastateparks.reserveamerica.com \nYou can also call the park for reservations ( (402) 376-1306) but your best bet is on-line. The camping cost is $15/day/site plus a day use fee. \nNote: Directions to Cornell Bridge from Valentine:  Take Nebraska 12 east about 4 miles to the Ft Niobrara Wildlife refuge turn-off. Turn right towards the river and then make the first right into the access parking lot. Be there by 10 am ready to shuttle and be sure to purchase your $1 wrist-band at the kiosk \nContact Bill Ashworth (washwort@gmail.com) to register for the trip if you didn’t sign up via the Planning and Permit survey

SUMMARY:White River\, Rangely CO. Class II. 65 miles. 3 Days (May 18-May 20\, 2024)
DESCRIPTION:White River from Trujillo Wash to the Enron Gas Wells take out  – 65 miles\, Class II \nThis is a three day\, two night trip .  Plan on two nights camping on the river – that  allows a full day for the long drive back  on Mon to avoid weekend traffic – it is 300 miles from Denver to the Put-in and another 30 or more miles to and from the takeout.  Shuttle takes a good 2 to 3 hours round trip. Put in at Trujillo Wash and take out at Enron Gas Wells. \nThis is an ACA trip – River Rating is Class I/II  (helmet required). There is one Class II rapid in Cowboy Canyon that can “generally” be avoided\, and a new Class II rapid also.  Intermediate paddling skill is required – this is NOT a beginner level trip. You must be able to maneuver your canoe around many strainers and through tight corners with very strong eddy lines\, and be able to eddy out quickly. \nBLM’s Floating the White River brochure describes this portion of the River “for 100 miles between Rangely\, Colorado\, and the river’s confluence with the Green River\, the White River cuts a rugged\, scenic trough into the high desert plains of the Uintah Basin. This is a place to paddle\, watch wildlife\, and occasionally leave the river for an unforgettable hike.” \nThis is an ACA trip. Non ACA members will need to pay $10 to cover insurance.    No dogs\, no little kids\, no “guests”\, except if you were planning on paddling with a non-RMCC member\, clear it with me first. \nRead more about the river here: https://www.blm.gov/sites/default/files/documents/files/white%20river%20for%20web.pdf \nNo sign ups before March 15th – NOTE!  I will be gone for 2 weeks in April\, and in and out of town after that. – be prepared to wait for any reply to an e-mail or phone call. \nTrip Coordinator: Mat Bozek\, matbozekx@gmail.com to register for this trip or ask questions.   \n  \n

SUMMARY:Yampa River\, South Beach to Duffy Mountain\, through Little Yampa Canyon. Class I
DESCRIPTION:The South Beach to Duffy Mountain stretch of the Yampa an easy flatwater/Class I trip.  Early May is a good time to float the Yampa because the bugs should not be a problem\, there should not be competition for campsites\, and usually the water level is excellent. \nThis is an easy trip for people new to canoeing and canoe camping. Pack a warm sleeping bag because the mornings may be frosty.  A headwind is guaranteed and it could be strong.   \nThe first day’s float will be through private ranch land\, and that is where the eagle nests will be seen.  We will see bald eagles and their nests; we may also see baby eagles in the nests.  The second day we will be paddling through BLM land\, which is more scenic but without the eagle nests.  Flocks of sheep with big scary sheep dogs may be seen\, but we do not have to camp with them.  Docile cattle may roam through camp. \nThis stretch has about half a dozen improved campsites.  Improved means a table and a fire ring.  Most likely we will camp on a large island inside BLM land\, without improvements.  This trip could be run in one long day.  It could be run in 3 days\, which would have you paddling a little each day and sitting in camp a lot as there are not hiking trails to explore.  I like this as a two-day trip.  Usually\, we reach the take-out around 2:00 or 3:00 in the afternoon of the second day and can drive much of the way back to Denver in day light. \nProvided that we get approval from the Yampa State Park office\, we can camp at the put-in\, South Beach\, the night before launching.  There is no fee to camp at South Beach\, but everyone will need to either have an annual state parks pass on their vehicle\, or purchase day passes.  State park passes also apply while we are on the river and both the put-in and take-out are managed by Yampa River State Park.  Both South Beach and Duffy Mountain river accesses have pit toilets.  While on the river\, we will have to pack out our waste.  Wag-bags are allowed but we will probably use a groover.  If you prefer not to camp the night before we launch\, there are motel rooms that can be had in Craig\, about 10 or 15 minutes from South Beach.  \nTrip Coordinator: Dan Custer (custer.dan@gmail.com)

SUMMARY:New Date! South Platte River: Brighton to Fort Lupton. Sunday\,  March 10\, 2024. (9 am to 2 or 3 pm)
DESCRIPTION:Sunday  March 10th     from 9am to 2 or 3 pm \nSign up with trip coordinator Mat Bozek .  No sign ups before  March 1st \n The South Platte River from Brighton to Fort Lupton is generally a beginner friendly 9 mile trip that is lined with cottonwoods hosting numerous birds and other wildlife… a nice way to begin the paddling season. There is one mandatory portage at a dam and one boat chute drop early on that will also be  portaged depending on conditions. Meet at Veterans Park in Brighton (junction of Hwy 7 and 85 – W of 85\, N of 7)  and be ready to begin the car shuttle no later than 9 am.  Take out is at Fort Lupton’s ballfields park.  Bring rain gear\, canoe floatation\, painters\, spare paddle and of course a PFD. Also bring a set of dry clothes in a water proof bag and a lunch or snack (20 min break).  Don’t pack too heavy\,  the two portages are not all that easy\, and you need to cross  a boulder field and fence. \n  \nFor a detailed description of the river and parking areas go to: http://boc123.com/Kayak/RiverGuide/South_Platte_Brighton_City.cfm \nThis will be an ACA trip – e-mail your aca # to mat. If not an ACA member\, bring $10 per person for the insurance fee.   Potentially the trip may be run on Sunday depending on the weather. \n  \nWarning! – there are now a very lot of strainers (trees) in the river with a lot of tight turns – you need to have good boat handling skills to avoid them.  The lower the water is\, the tighter the gaps past the sweepers.  I expect the water to be on the low side of average
