SUMMARY:Smith River\, if there is water (TRIP FULL AGAIN - waitlist restarted; no plan for Missouri Breaks alternative)
DESCRIPTION:Our Smith River\, MT trip October 1 – 7\, 2023 (plus driving) trip is full again.   The Smith River\, from Camp Baker to Eden Bridge is a 59-mile\, Class II reach through beautiful limestone canyons (see the Floater Guide).  The 4 night ‘high-season’ limit for the reach does not apply to this October trip.  Consequently\, we’re planning to camp at the Camp Baker put-in and then enjoy the canyon for 6 nights / 7 days.  The plan is to boat the Smith if there is sufficient water — that exact amount is TBD\, but canoes generally begin to have trouble at flows below 150cfs.  We will have to watch the flows at the end of September and decide by Thursday evening\, September 28th whether the flows and predicted weather are desirable for our trip.  Flows tank in mid-July\, but usually return to runable levels in September – October.  We could drive 12 hours to Camp Baker and have to cancel at the last minute.  See Smith River Flows from 2015 – 2021 and the current  Smith River Flow Gauge  \nAccording to Smith River rangers\, campsites will be something between self-reservation at the put-in and first come\, first serve.  But the river is not crowded in the fall.  We will have a plan for preferred campsites by late September\, but will have to be flexible on the river.  \nRegarding boating the Smith\, the Floater’s Guide says: \nThroughout its length\, the Smith moves quickly with sharp turns\, rocky shallows and snags in/or partially across the river. There is one section of class II whitewater at river mile 47 and several sections of class II whitewater at mile 49. The current of the river can sweep you into sheer rock walls and in higher flows\, eddies can be very strong. In addition\, floaters may encounter float gates\, downed trees and pieces of fence torn loose by high water. You should possess\, at a minimum\, intermediate rowing or paddling skills before floating the Smith. Secure all equipment tightly in your boat and carry your gear in waterproof bags or boxes \nSee the Smith River webpage for general information and the 2023 Floater Information Packet about boating the Smith.  Pay special attention to requirements for carrying all drinking water\, bear-proof food storage\, and Montana boat inspections.  The permit fee is $60 per non-resident (MT) boater.  Car shuttle costs are TBD — commercial shuttle fees are about $140 per vehicle shuttled.  There is either a 180 mile paved road or a 75 mile dirt road route (One way).  This will be a ACA-sanctioned trip with a $10 event fee for anyone who is not an ACA member. \nI’d like to include some experienced Smith River boaters and some newbies\, including myself\, in the group.  We are aiming for 5 – 10 boaters.  We currently have 5 committed and 3 non-committal boaters.  Please let me (gvmutz@gmail.com) know if you are interested or have questions.   \nNote that an initial plan for some or all boaters to switch to the Upper Missouri Breaks — 108 miles of Class I river — if Smith flows are too low has been abandoned for lack of interest.  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:There is space available in an upcoming American Canoe Association Level 1 Canoe Instructor Certification and Paddlesports Safety Facilitator (PSF) course. This will be offered September 13-15\, 2023\, in Morrison\, CO.   \nThis is an instructor development workshop and an instructor certification exam (IDW/ICE) for Level 1 Introduction to Canoeing. The Introduction to Canoeing course is designed as a short program emphasizing safety\, enjoyment\, and skill acquisition for entry level individuals in the public\, private and commercial setting. This class will also include endorsement as a Paddlesports Safety Facilitator (PSF). SUMMARY:Lake Powell Houseboat/Kayak trip from Wahweap Marina (Page\, AZ) to the San Juan Arm. August 24-31(Thursday-Thursday) Class I-II
DESCRIPTION:Arrive at the Wahweap Marina late afternoon on the 24th and load gear and sleep on the houseboat. The plan is to hustle up-lake to the middle of the San Juan Arm in 2 days. Here we will drop off a set of self-sufficient paddlers and they will find their own way back to a marina. We will find good scenery\, petroglyphs\, waterfalls\, slot canyons\, and more. \nWe will go from 1 camp to the next on a 48’ Navigator houseboat as it has an angled upper deck upon which we can slide our kayaks up and down. Due to this boat stashing and also due to weather considerations (can get big winds and waves especially on the wider parts of the lake) we will limit boats to those that weigh less than about 60 pounds\, and want to have skirted sea kayaks or decked canoes. Contact Karen for questions about your boat. Class I-II due to waves caused by wind and/or speed boats. Also\, landings can be scarce. \nThe trip will be limited to about 11 people and a waiting list. 2-day riders will pay about 1/3 of the full trip rate which will be around $700 for houseboat rental\, tax\, gas\, insurance\, and a few small items. We will rotate group dinners and otherwise eat our own food. The boat has a nice kitchen with a big grill\, oven\, microwave and refrigerator/coolers.  \nShore camping also varies. We will be looking for good houseboat landings with a few tent spots when we have a large crew; but can all sleep on the big boat when less people are on board. DESCRIPTION:RMCC members and guests are welcome to paddle the North Platte River from Glendo Reservoir almost to Guernsey Reservoir\, a distance of almost 20 miles. This is a fun\, day long paddling trip and I hope you can join us. We will paddle on Saturday\, Aug 12 (after the season silt flows).  Most will be camping in Two Moon Campground in Glendo State Park on Friday night (its about a 3 hour drive from Denver) before the trip as well as Saturday night for those who choose (there will be an optional  potluck that night). For no highway noise\, here’s a map to the closest place that’s just 2 minutes away. See the dirt road that goes off a bit to the southeast? That’s whole area is camping. It’s free\, so you never know how many RVs are posted up there\, but it usually works out. DESCRIPTION:Trip cancelled due to high water! \nUnfortunately\, projected water levels exceeding this trip’s acceptable max mean this trip must be cancelled. \nThis would be a trip to explore the North Platte River in 2 single day trips\, with a base camp at the BLM Dugway Campground in Sinclair\, Wyoming. \nPaddling from Dugway to Seminole Reservoir turns out to be undoable since there are no access points along the North Platte from the Shady Rest Access until Seminole Reservoir proper which would require a long paddle across the reservoir.  Day 1 would still be to paddle the I80/Ft. Steele to Dugway section.  For the 2nd day\, we can discuss and select a day run beforehand\, see list below.  Though we could also do I80 to Dugway again. \nRiver Difficulty: Class 1.  There is a checkboard of private property along the river and we cannot get out along private land.  In addition\, this year’s snowpack may result in June flows that are beyond our comfort level. \nLocation: Wyoming. Ft. Steele is just off I-80\, west of the Saratoga Exit and east of the Sinclair Exit. Dugway is along CR 351 accessed from the 2nd Sinclair exit on I-80. \nMileage: from Denver\, CO to Sinclair\, about 250 miles and 4 hours drive time. \nThe Dugway Campground is a BLM campground. Camping cost is free\, Reservations are not available. *The reason for the Sunday start is that the Dugway Campground is a small\, free BLM campground\, and we are thinking that it may get filled up on the weekend. \nOverview:  \nDrive up on Sunday.  Stop at Ft. Steele and check out the access area.  Continue to drive to Dugway and setup camp.  Get up on Monday\, drive to Ft. Steele\, shuttle\, put-in and paddle to Dugway and take-out.  Drive back to get the vehicles at Ft. Steele and return to Dugway for the evening.  Determine next day’s plan.  Get up on Tuesday and break camp.  Drive vehicles to the agreed upon put-in.  Shuttle vehicles to take-out.  Drive back and put in\, paddle to the take-out. Run shuttle.  Drive home. \nBoat Inspection and permits:  Boats need to pass the AIS inspection. Inspection Station is located on US 287 as you enter Laramie (at the Port-of-Entry). No  water at the campground but vault toilets are available. The camping fee will be shared among those of us who stay there. Hotels are available in Fruita\, CO (1 hr) & Moab\, UT (45 min) for anyone who prefers not to camp.\n\nSaturday morning\,  we’ll gather at the campground\, drive to the put-in at Cisco Landing & float a somewhat remote\, rarely-run 16-mile section of the Colorado River thru desert & ranchland back to our campsite at Dewey Bridge. Lunch along the river.\n\nSunday morning\,  we’ll launch at Dewey Bridge to enjoy 8 miles of spectacular red rock scenery as we paddle to our take-out at Lower Onion Creek. Lunch along the river. SUMMARY:Niobrara River Memorial Day - Cancelled due to Wind
DESCRIPTION:This will be an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a $10/person insurance fee.  This is an easy\, kids-friendly class 1 river\, with our campground in the middle of the run.  Each day will be about 12 miles and about 4 hours. For more information about skill level and equipment information\, see RMCC Boating Requirements and Recommendations. \nThis beautiful stretch is one of America’s premier scenic heritage waterways; we’ll see many waterfalls\, beautiful hardwood forests\, and birds!  And the resident buffalo herd at the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (https://www.fws.gov/refuge/fort_niobrara/ ) often has calves this time of year.  We run the river on Saturday and Sunday. Most will car camp at Smith Falls State Park\, Friday – Sunday nights; return to the Front Range after breakfast on Monday (about a 6-7 hour drive back to Denver) or continue to see the sights of Nebraska or head up to South Dakota. \nMemorial Day is shoulder season in the Sand Hills of Nebraska and we often have rain on parts of one or more days.  \nNiobrara River Trail description here .  \nDescription from Backpacker magazine:  http://www.backpacker.com/stories/paddle-nebraska-s-niobrara-river \nRiver gage at https://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=06461500.  We generally run it at between 1000 and 2000 cfs. \nSaturday\, we’ll meet at 10am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the Cornell Bridge put-in near Valentine\, down to the Smith Falls State Park campground and beach the canoes\, and then start from there again on Sunday.   If you are not camping\, but meeting us in the morning\, see the note\, below for directions. \nSaturday evening – optional potluck dinner at one of the convenient campsites.  There is a large group shelter generally available in case of rain. \nSunday\, we’ll meet near the boat ramp (where we took out on Saturday) at 10am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the campground to the take-out – probably at Sunny Brook Camp\, about a mile upstream of Rocky Ford.  The shuttle takes over an hour\, so non-drivers should plan to relax\, hike to Smith Falls\, and/or birdwatch at the campground while the drivers are driving. The campground was reconfigured for 2021\, adding more sites and mixing the use between tents and RVs in all sites. The camping cost is $15/day/site plus a day use fee. \nNote: Directions to Cornell Bridge from Valentine:  Take Nebraska 12 east about 4 miles to the Ft Niobrara Wildlife refuge turn-off. Turn right towards the river and then make the first right into the access parking lot. DESCRIPTION:Updated Details Below! \nMark your calendars for a joint cleanup paddle with Rocky Mountain Sea Kayak Club (RMSKC) at Union Reservoir. \nThis is an ACA paddle\, so a person who is not an ACA member will be required to purchase an ACA event membership for $10.00 and to complete an ACA Waiver & Release of Liability form (adult or minor).   Each participant will also sign a City of Longmont waiver\, provided on site the day of the event. \nThe City of Longmont has agreed to waive their entrance and boating fees for participants. \nAlong with cleaning up\, paddlers will have an opportunity to view the great selection of birds found at Union\, including yellow-headed black birds\, coots\, grebes\, eagles\, herons\, pelicans\, osprey\, and red-tailed hawks.  Its a great place to paddle\, especially with the fee being waived.  It is located east of County Line Road in Longmont.\n\nDate:               Monday\, May 22\, 2023\n\nDirections:      From Boulder or Longmont\, travel east on CO 119 to East County Line Road.  (The new UCHealth Hospital is on the Northwest corner of this intersection.).  At the traffic light\, turn left (north).  You will go over a set of railroad tracks.  County Road 26 will be the next right.  Distance from CO 119 to CR 26 is about 3/4 mile.  Take a right\, travel east for about 1/2 mile\, then turn north (left) into Union Reservoir.\nGoogle:           https://goo.gl/maps/ZVmAwoY3ZFBLaR568 \nStart Time:      Meeting time is 9:15\, Ready to paddle at 10 AM.\n\nLunch:             How about if we plan to meet back at the put-in by noon or so for a group (bring-your-own) lunch. SUMMARY:White River – Rangely\, CO.\, May 20 - 22. 65 miles\, Class II
DESCRIPTION:White River from Trujillo Wash to the Enron Gas Wells take out. \nThis is a three day\, two night trip .  Plan on two nights camping on the river – that  allows a full day for the long drive back  on Mon to avoid weekend traffic – it is 285 miles from Denver to Rangely and another 30 or more miles to and from the takeout.  Shuttle takes a good 2 to 3 hours round trip. Put in at Trujillo Wash and take out at Enron Gas Wells. \nThis is an ACA trip – River Rating is Class I/II  (helmet required). There is one Class II rapid in Cowboy Canyon that can “generally” be avoided.  Intermediate paddling skill is required – this is NOT a beginner level trip. You must be able to maneuver your canoe around many strainers and through tight corners with very strong eddy lines\, and be able to eddy out quickly. \nBLM’s Floating the White River brochure describes this portion of the River “for 100 miles between Rangely\, Colorado\, and the river’s confluence with the Green River\, the White River cuts a rugged\, scenic trough into the high desert plains of the Uintah Basin. This is a place to paddle\, watch wildlife\, and occasionally leave the river for an unforgettable hike.” \nThis is an ACA trip. SUMMARY:Yampa River\, South Beach to Duffy Mountain\, through Little Yampa Canyon. Class I.   CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:The South Beach to Duffy Mountain stretch of the Yampa an easy flatwater/Class I trip. Early May is a good time to float the Yampa because the bugs should not be a problem\, there should not be competition for campsites\, and usually the water level is excellent. \nThis is an easy trip for people new to canoeing and canoe camping. Pack a warm sleeping bag because the mornings may be frosty. A headwind is guaranteed and it could be strong.   \nThe first day’s float will be through private ranch land\, and that is where the eagle nests will be seen. We will see bald eagles and their nests; we may also see baby eagles in the nests. The second day we will be paddling through BLM land\, which is more scenic but without the eagle nests. Flocks of sheep with big scary sheep dogs may be seen\, but we do not have to camp with them. Docile cattle may roam past camp. \nThis stretch has about half a dozen improved campsites. Improved means a table and a fire ring. Most likely we will camp on a large island inside BLM land\, without improvements. This trip could be run in one long day. It could be run in 3 days\, which would have you paddling a little each day and sitting in camp a lot as there are not hiking trails to explore. I like this as a two-day trip. Usually\, we reach the take-out around 2:00 or 3:00 in the afternoon of the second day and can drive much of the way back to Denver in day light. \nProvided that we get approval from the Yampa State Park office\, we can camp at the put-in\, South Beach\, the night before launching. There is no fee to camp at South Beach\, but everyone will need to either have an annual state parks pass on their vehicle\, or purchase day passes.  State park passes also apply while we are on the river and both the put-in and take-out are managed by Yampa River State Park.  Both South Beach and Duffy Mountain river accesses have pit toilets. While on the river\, we will have to pack out our waste. If you prefer not to camp the night before we launch\, there are motel rooms that can be had in Craig\, about 10 or 15 minutes from South Beach.  \nTrip Coordinator: Dan Custer (custer.dan@gmail.com) \n

May 10-14 (Wed.thru Sun. ) Trip is Full.  Wait-list available. \n     This beautiful 5 day canoe camping trip in canyon country is a class I easy flatwater run\, but requires backcountry skills as this is a wilderness trip. The trip will use the private Ruby Ranch put in\, and take out at Mineral Bottom. We will camp in Moab Tuesday night\, May 9\, in order to arrive at Tex’s early morning Wednesday\, May 10 for a commercial shuttle to the put-in. Take out will be on Sunday\, May 14. People may drive home on Sunday or consider camping that night and driving back on Monday. Shuttle will cost between $195-$240 per person\, depending on the boat.
