SUMMARY:RMCC Niobrara Wild and Scenic River Memorial Day
DESCRIPTION:This will be an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a $10/person insurance fee.  This is an easy\, kids-friendly class 1 river\, with our campground in the middle of the run.  Each day will be about 12 miles and about 4 hours. Contact Bill Ashworth (washwort@gmail.com) to register for the trip. \nThis beautiful stretch is one of America’s premier scenic heritage waterways; we’ll see many waterfalls\, beautiful hardwood forests\, and birds!  And the resident buffalo herd at the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (https://www.fws.gov/refuge/fort_niobrara/ ) often has calves this time of year.  We run the river on Saturday and Sunday. Most will car camp at Smith Falls State Park\, Friday – Sunday nights; return to the Front Range after breakfast on Monday (about a 6-7 hour drive back to Denver) or continue to see the sights of Nebraska or head up to South Dakota. \nNiobrara River Trail description here .  \nDescription from Backpacker magazine:  http://www.backpacker.com/stories/paddle-nebraska-s-niobrara-river \nRiver gage at https://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=06461500.  We generally run it at between 1000 and 2000 cfs. \nSaturday\, we’ll meet at 10am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the Cornell Bridge put-in near Valentine\, down to the State Park campground and beach the canoes and then start from then again on Sunday.   If you are not camping\, but meeting us in the morning\, see the note\, below for directions. \nSaturday evening – optional potluck dinner at one of the convenient campsites.  There is a large group shelter generally available in case of rain. \nSunday\, we’ll meet near the boat ramp (where we took out on Saturday) at 10am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the campground to the take-out – probably at Sunny Brook Camp\, about a mile upstream of Rocky Ford.  The shuttle takes over an hour\, so non-drivers should plan to relax\, hike to Smith Falls\, and/or birdwatch at the campground while the drivers are driving. We will verify the 10am shuttle start on Saturday night. \nSunday evening: Informal group happy hour possible\, but no specific group activity planned.  Some of us will be checking out (i.e.\, scouting\, not running) the Norden chute and going to the TNC Niobrara Valley Preserve near there) (https://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/nebraska/placesweprotect/niobrara-valley-preserve.xml  \nCamping \nThe campground doesn’t open until a couple of weeks before Memorial Day and there is no official group site.  Tents will go down by the river and RVs and trailers will be put on the slope across the road from the tents.  Several sites are VERY large and could easily accommodate 4 or 5 tents if folks would like a group setting or just couldn’t get a reservation.  Smith Falls State Park (402) 376-1306)\, 2019 Costs in prior years: Day use fee $5/car\, camping fee $8/person/night\, showers included.  Phone reservations will likely be taken starting early May.    \n  \nNote: Directions to Cornell Bridge from Valentine:  Take Nebraska 12 east about 4 miles to the Ft Niobrara Wildlife refuge turn-off. Turn right towards the river and then make the first right into the access parking lot. Be there by 11 am ready to shuttle and be sure to purchase your $1 wrist-band at the kiosk

SUMMARY:White River – Rangely Co - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:The White River trip is cancelled due to low water level. \n  \nWhite River from Trujillo Wash to the Enron Gas Wells take out  – 65 miles\, Class II \nThis is a three day\, two night trip .  Plan on two nights camping on the river –  but with a strong group\, we may opt to do the trip in two days/one night depending on flow – that  would allow a full day for the long drive back – it is 285 miles from Denver to Rangely and another 30 or more miles to and from the takeout.  Shuttle takes a good 2 to 3 hours round trip. Put in at Trujillo Wash and take out at Enron Gas Wells. \nRiver Rating is Class I/II  (helmet required). There is one Class II rapid in Cowboy Canyon that can “generally” be avoided.  Intermediate paddling skill is required – this is NOT a beginner level trip. You must be able to maneuver your canoe around many strainers and through tight corners with very strong eddy lines\, and be able to eddy out quickly. \nBLM’s Floating the White River brochure (Floating the White River | Bureau of Land Management (blm.gov) \ndescribes this portion of the River “for 100 miles between Rangely\, Colorado\, and the river’s confluence with the Green River\, the White River cuts a rugged\, scenic trough into the high desert plains of the Uintah Basin. This is a place to paddle\, watch wildlife\, and occasionally leave the river for an unforgettable hike.” \nThis is an ACA trip. Non ACA members will need to pay $10 to cover insurance. \nContact Trip Coordinator: Mat Bozek\, matbozekx@gmail.com to register for this trip or ask questions.

SUMMARY:Upper Missouri National Wild & Scenic River\, Montana
DESCRIPTION:Upper Missouri National Wild & Scenic River\, Montana \n8 Days     May 8th    thru   May 15th       150 river miles   Class 1  it is an ACA trip \nIt is 777 miles from\, Denver to the put in at Fort Benton \nContact Trip Coordinator Mat Bozek at matbozekx@gmail.com to register \n  \nWe will be camping 7 nights on the river.  This is the famous “White Cliffs” / “Missouri Breaks” \nSection of the Missouri River.   No little kids\, no dogs\, NO WHINING allowed. \n  \nMandatory equipment will include an alarm clock for each tent.  Yes\, an alarm clock! for the mandatory 8 AM start each day.  This section is known for high upriver winds\, and we will be on the water each day by 8 AM so as to get to camp by early afternoon to avoid the worst of the winds.   Aside from high winds\, other hazards include rattlesnakes\, ice cold water\, falling cottonwood branches\, soft crumbly rock (on hikes) and all the usual other hazards of river travel\, as well as some (minor) potential for spring blizzards. \n  \nWe will be camping in a mix of “primitive” and “developed” boat camps (and potentially just bushwhack camping if necessary).   River toilets are mandatory\, except that WAG Bags are an acceptable alternative if you put them into a waterproof container.  Everyone will be responsible for their own Poo – No S***!.  I’m not hauling yours.  The river water is not fit for drinking\, even if filtering\, as it contains agricultural runoff of fertilizers and pesticides (and it’s not known as The Big Muddy for nothing).  Everyone is required to carry enough drinking water for the full trip.  I expect to carry 7 gallons myself – ½ gal for first and last days and a full gallon for each day between.  Recommended is a gallon per person per day.   At 8 lbs/gallon\, that 56 pounds to start with (per person\, at least). \n  \nI hope to get to camp early enough to allow time for some hiking in the afternoons.  I am planning on 6 camps and 6 travel days\, with one day in reserve to use as a layover\, or makeup day if needed.  May is the highest flow rate\, so I anticipate a fair current – expect to paddle at least one or two 30 mile days\, which means you need to be in good enough physical condition to paddle (not float) for 6 to 8 hours each day. If the current is flowing at 2 mph and we paddle at 3 mph\, that’s 5 mph and 6 hours of actual paddling time to cover 30 miles.  Could be more or less depending on conditions. \n  \nThe shuttle service in Ft. Benton has a 10 passenger van – we may have to adlib if there will be more drivers. We may opt to do our own shuttle if we arrive at Ft Benton soon enough   We may need to use two shuttle services\, or maybe pre-shuttle some of our vehicles.  Depending\, shuttle service will cost a minimum of $40 per driver – could be double that or more)  The shuttle is 150 miles one-way\, which is why I prefer to use a shuttle service. \n  \nFEES:  aside from the shuttle fees\, you should bring enough cash to pay for camping at the pay campgrounds if we are forced to use them (varies from $5 to $12 per site) \nBLM River Trip Fees = $4 per person per day = $28 per person – we will pay at the Coal Banks Landing ranger station..

SUMMARY:Yampa\, South Beach to Duffy Mountain
DESCRIPTION:THIS TRIP IS CURRENTLY FULL AND A WAITING LIST HAS BEEN STARTED.  If you wish to be added to the waiting list\, please contact the Trip Coordinator\, Dan Custer at custer.dan@gmail.com. \nThe South Beach to Duffy Mountain stretch of the Yampa is an easy flatwater/Class I trip.  In early May we have had very good flow and not many mosquitoes\, and not much (if any) competition for campsites. In recent years the water level in early May has been excellent with very few paddle strikes on the bottom of the river. \nThis is a good trip to break out your gear from storage and get ready for the canoe season.  It is also an easy trip for people new to canoeing and canoe camping.  Pack a warm sleeping bag because the mornings will be frosty. As usual\, be ready for all weather conditions from pouring rain\, to snow\, and to sunshine.  Afternoon sunshine has been the norm. \nThe first day’s float will be through private ranch land where the eagle nests will be seen.  Many bald eagle nests are on this stretch and  some may have visible babies in them.  The second day we will be paddling through BLM land\, which is more scenic but without the eagle nests (and railroad).  Flocks of sheep with big scary sheep dogs may be seen\, but we will not be camping with them. \nWe will do this stretch in 2 days\, with an option for some to do it in 3 days.  A two day weekend trip works for many. Optionally\, some may go for a three day trip\, where the last day should finish by Noon\, thus avoiding potentially strong afternoon headwinds before the take-out.  \nTo register for this event\, email Trip Coordinator Dan Custer at custer.dan@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Gunnison River
DESCRIPTION:Gunnison River: Delta to Whitewater – 42 miles \nClass II        ACA trip \nTrip coordinator – Mat Bozek\, matbozekx@gmail.com \nThis is an ACA trip – if you are an ACA member\, e-mail me your membership number – if you have an Online Waiver\, you can send me a copy of that.  Except for people with a valid online waiver\, you will need to fill out an ACA waiver for the trip (BRING YOUR # with you – you need it for the waiver form).  If you are not an ACA member\, then you need to pay the $5 per person insurance fee.  Since this is an ACA trip\, and since it is Class II – you must have a helmet for the CII rapids (NO Bike Helmets). \nI am still working on the shuttle arrangements – hopefully we will be able to park vehicles at the Lazy S motel in Whitewater. . – still a work in process right now. \nI will bring a toilet and firepan.  Temps should be fairly mild – expect highs in the 50s and lows about 30.  Plan for two nights camping. And  plan on a very early Sunday\, to get down river  hopefully before the winds kick up. \nThere are 2 Class II rapids.  I don’t recall how low I have ever run the Gunny\, but I recall one summer trip that we had to walk the boats thru the rock garden instead of doing the normal run for the first CII – we will scout the first rapid.  The second CII can be avoided – it is at Dominguez canyon – a left channel (with a killer undercut rock) will avoid the CII\, which is right of the island.  There is also a rock dam to negotiate about 6 miles down river – it is not a problem\, but must be run at far left.  This run is easier in higher water than low.+ \nSign up with trip coordinator Mat Bozek  at matbozekx@gmail.com

SUMMARY:South Platte River: Brighton to Fort Lupton - note date change
DESCRIPTION:The South Platte River from Brighton to Fort Lupton is generally a beginner friendly 9 mile trip that is lined with cottonwoods hosting numerous birds and other wildlife… a nice way to begin the paddling season. There is one mandatory portage at a dam and one boat chute drop early on that will most likely be  portaged depending on conditions. Meet at Veterans Park in Brighton and be ready to begin the car shuttle no later than 9 am.  Take out is at the Fort Lupton’s ballfields park.  Bring Rain Gear\, canoe floatation\, painters\, spare paddle and of course a PFD. Also bring a set of dry clothes in a water proof bag and a lunch or snack.  Don’t pack too heavy\,  the two portages are not all that easy\, and you need to cross  a boulder field and fence. \nFor a detailed description of the river and parking areas go to: http://boc123.com/Kayak/RiverGuide/South_Platte_Brighton_City.cfm \nThis will be an ACA trip – e-mail your aca # to Mat at matbozekx@gmail.com. If you are not an ACA member\, bring $5 per person for the insurance fee.     \nWarning! – there is now a lot of strainers (trees) in the river with lots of tight turns – you need to have good boat handling skills to avoid them. \nContact Trip Coordinator Mat Bozek at matbozekx@gmail.com to register \nMarch 9 Update:  Sunday forecast has deteriorated (mid-30s and snow). Trip moved to Mar 20 \nYou will all have to sign a covid 19 waiver. \n \nIf you are a current ACA member\, bring your member # with you (or e-mail it to me)\n \nif you are not ACA member\, then bring $5 cash per non-member.\n \nCAUTION:  there are now a lot of sweepers at tight corners – you need to be adept at steering your boat around them  – due to the large number of hazards\, I will try to break up the group into 2 or 3 smaller sub-groups so that we don;t get crowded and hung up at the tight spots\, and so no one gets pushed into a hazard.

SUMMARY:2021 Planning and Permit Party
DESCRIPTION:Explore new paddling possibilities at RMCC’s annual Planning and Permit Party. Although this year’s party will be on-line\, the information gathered during this meeting will be invaluable for mapping out your 2021 paddling adventures.  \nBill Ashworth will begin with a slideshow of the many permitted trips (rivers that require a permit are often awarded through a lottery system) that people may want to apply for in 2021.  \nWe will also present popular non-permitted day\, weekend\, and multi-day trips\, and where a Trip Coordinator has been identified\, he or she will give you a brief description of their trip and explain why you might want to join them. Debbie HInde\, our Grand Poobah of Instruction will also give a overview of the class available where you will learn new canoeing and safety skills and improve on old ones.  \n  \nBecause we will not be able to sign up for trips and classes in person\, an on-line survey is being developed that will let us know the trips and classes you are most interested in. You will be able to fill out this form after January 1. It is important to fill out the survey for many reasons including letting Trip Coordinators know you want to join a certain trip or class (some of these trips fill up fast and selection is often on a first-come-first-served basis); sharing contact information with people who are interested in applying for the same river permit; and identifying popular trips where a trip coordinator is needed.  \nWe will be emailing a link to this zoom meeting to all of RMCC’s members.  If you have any questions regarding the Planning and Permit Party or 2021 activities\, please contact Kit Williams\, RMCC Trip Master\, at kitrynwilliams@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:RMCC Annual Meeting and Elections (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Bill and Kathy Ashworth will host us on Zoom – Connection information to be sent out by Post before the meeting.\n Business Meeting Agenda:  We will start with a business meeting to review the year’s activities\, hear from our board members\, and talk about the coming season.  Bring your ideas for virtual events to get us through the 2020-21 winter.  (Unless we have a miracle Covid cure this year\, we will also have a virtual Permit Party in early- to mid- January to discuss river permits and other on-the-water events for the coming year.) The final item on the business meeting agenda will be officer elections. \n Photo Show: The annual meeting will include our annual photo extravaganza.  Jeff Keeler has agreed to orchestrate this again this year with ALL SUBMISSIONS submitted no later than November 10.   Photos can be easily uploaded to our GoogleDrive as a folder of individual photos\, as a powerpoint presentation or\, if arranged ahead of time with Jeff\, via a link to a photo program like Flicker.  Jeff will share his screen and advance through your photos (“next slide\, please”) with your narration. \n\n Both club trips and your personal boating adventures are fair game\n Please limit a photo set to 15 pics\, although you are welcome to submit more than one set.  We will rotate through presenters\, one set at a time\, as time and audience interest allows.\n Whether or not you send a photo set\, send your best masked or social distanced boating pic of the season to Kathryn and we’ll include a collage of these photos for a Pandemic Photo competition.\n\n\n\n \n\nWear your RMCC tee-shirt\, crank up those camp stoves and dutch ovens for a bit of ambience\, and reconnect with your RMCC boating friends for a review of 2020 boating and a preview of the coming year.\n\n \n\nHope to see and hear you on November 14.

SUMMARY:Powell Houseboat from Bullfrog into the Escalante Arm
DESCRIPTION:THIS TRIP IS FULL AND A WAITING LIST HAS BEEN STARTED. Please contact Karen Amundson at canoekarena@msn.com if you want to be added to the waiting list. \nOctober 9-18 (Thursday-Saturday) – Class I-II.  Arrive at the Bullfrog Basin Campground or Defiance House Lodge (or your choice) late afternoon on October 8 and be ready to launch at the Bullfrog Marina by mid-morning of the 9th.  Ideally we will camp at 4 or 5 locations\, usually for 2 nights per camp.  We plan to explore on foot and/or paddle all of the accessible canyons in the Escalante Arm and do another 3-4 more side canyons off of the main Powell lake.  We will find petroglyphs\, Indian ruins\, waterfalls\, slot canyons\, and more. \nWe will go from 1 camp to the next on a 53’ Adventurer houseboat as it has an angled upper deck upon which we can slide our kayaks up and down.  Due to this boat stashing and also due to weather considerations (can get big winds and waves especially on the wider parts of the lake) we will limit boats to those that weigh less than about 60 pounds\, and want to have skirted sea kayaks or decked canoes.  Contact Karen for questions about your boat.  Class I-II due to waves caused by wind and/or speed boats.  Also\, landings can be scarce. \nThe trip will be limited to 10 people and a waiting list.  But it will be priced for 8 people with a likely refund of 20-25% assuming we do not lose people near when the trip starts and do not damage the houseboat.  A per person price of $620 will cover houseboat rental\, gas\, insurance\, and a few small items.  Post trip refund will be around $100 if all goes well.  We plan to have 2 people fixing dinner for the whole group each of the 1st 5 nights of the trip\, and then do smaller groups after that.  On your own for breakfasts and lunches.   \nThe houseboat has 2 “staterooms”\, a big upper deck\, small front and back decks\, and a lower bunk room that is usually used for storage for a few people who want to camp on shore.  Available camps vary depending on lake water levels and how many boats are already parked or searching the area.  Shore camping also varies.  The boat has a nice kitchen with a big grill\, oven and 2 refrigerators.  Carol\, Werner\, and Karen have experience with driving/parking the big boat\, and took the Houseboat 101 class. \nContact Karen Amundson at canoekarena@msn.com for further information and to join the trip or be on the Wait List.

SUMMARY:Trip Full - RMCC Colorado River Loma to Westwater Oct 3 - 4
DESCRIPTION:Join RMCC as we paddle the Colorado River from Loma\, CO to the Westwater Station boat ramp in Utah through  Ruby and Horsethief Canyons . We’ll be camping at one of the larger sites on the river Saturday night – TBD. Our late September date should offer gorgeous fall color on the canyon bottom. This is an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a $5/person insurance fee. There is $100 campsite fee which I will pay in July and the estimated $5/paddler will be due to me on the river. If the trip is cancelled (happened due to high forecasted winds once in 12 years)\, I’ll need the camping fee from registered paddlers regardless. Check out the trip flyer  RMCC-Ruby-Horsethief-flyer 2020 . Contact Bill Ashworth to sign up or with questions at washwort at gmail.com. 720-352-6456  \nNote: Starting this July\, Colorado Hunting or Fishing licenses required for Loma launch. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Niobrara River - Sept 19-20
DESCRIPTION:This will be an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a $5/person insurance fee.  This is an easy\, kids-friendly class 1 river\, with our campground in the middle of the run.  Each day will be about 12 miles and about 4 hours. Contact David Kerry (davidkerryedwards@yahoo.com) to register for the trip. Canoes and kayaks are available to rent from local outfitters. Let me know if you need additional information about that. \nThis beautiful stretch is one of America’s premier scenic heritage waterways; we’ll see many waterfalls\, beautiful hardwood forests\, and woodland birds!  And the resident buffalo herd at the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (https://www.fws.gov/refuge/fort_niobrara/ ) often has calves this time of year.  We run the river on Saturday and Sunday. Most will car camp at Smith Falls State Park\, Friday – Sunday nights (May 22-24); return to the Front Range after breakfast on Monday (about a 6-7 hour drive back to Denver) or continue to see the sights of Nebraska or head up to South Dakota. \nNiobrara River Trail description here .  \nDescription from Backpacker magazine:  http://www.backpacker.com/stories/paddle-nebraska-s-niobrara-river \nRiver gage at https://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=06461500.  We generally run it between 1000-2000 cfs. \nSaturday\, we’ll meet at 9am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the Cornell Bridge put-in near Valentine\, paddle down to the State Park campground\, beach the canoes and then start from there again on Sunday.   If you are not camping\, but meeting us in the morning\, see the note\, below for directions. \nSaturday evening – optional potluck appetizers and dinner at one of the convenient campsites (location to be announced and look for the RMCC banner).  There is a large group shelter generally  available in case of rain. \nSunday\, we’ll meet near the boat ramp (where we took out on Saturday) at 9am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the campground to the take-out – probably at Sunny Brook Camp\, about a mile upstream of Rocky Ford. Some of us will be checking out (i.e.\, scouting\, not running) the Norden chute and going to the The Nature Conservancy Niobrara Valley Preserve near there) (https://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/nebraska/placesweprotect/niobrara-valley-preserve.xml );  see a recent TNC blog at: https://prairieecologist.com/2018/05/04/photo-of-the-week-may-4-2018/ \nCamping \nThe Smith Falls State Park campground (http://outdoornebraska.gov/smithfalls/) doesn’t open until a week or two before Memorial Day and there is no official group site.  Tents will go down by the river and RVs and trailers will be put on the slope across the road from the tents.  Several sites are VERY large and could easily accommodate 4 or 5 tents if folks would like a group setting or just couldn’t get a reservation.  Smith Falls State Park (402) 376-1306)\, $5/person/night\, showers included.  Phone reservations will likely be taken starting early May. \nNote: Directions to Cornell Bridge from Valentine:  Take Nebraska 12 east about 4 miles to the Ft Niobrara Wildlife refuge turn-off. Turn right towards the river and then make the first right into the access parking lot. Be there by 9 am ready to shuttle and be sure to purchase your $1 wrist-band at the kiosk. \nCamping is available in Valentine town park if people don’t want to drive out to Smith Falls Friday night. Also camping is available just south of Valentine at Merritt Reservoir although it can be busy on a Friday night. \n  \nIMPORTANT: Valentine is on CENTRAL TIME.

SUMMARY:Montana Trio
DESCRIPTION:This Montana canoe trip allows you to explore sections of the beautiful Flathead River west of Glacier National Park. \nJuly 15 (Wednesday) Clearwater River Trail #7777A is on the north end of Seeley Lake in the Lolo National Forest. Class I. It is 3.5 miles long (2 hours) and marshy with many birds. Bring binoculars and telephoto cameras to view osprey\, bald eagles\, belted kingfishers\, Great Blue Herons\, common loons\, red-necked grebes\, yellow warblers\, and a variety of other ducks and birds and mammals. Take a 1.5 mile trail (hike) back to the put-in as part of the shuttle. More info is at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/lolo/recreation/recarea/?recid=10327 \nOptional afterwards\, drive to the west side of Seeley Lake to see Gus\, the huge larch tree and the James Girard Memorial Tamarack Grove. We have reserved Group Camp A at Big Larch Campground on the east side of Seeley Lake for July 14 and 15 with room for 6 vehicles. A few may want to arrive early to get an individual campsite for just $5 per night (no reservations). Contact Karen Amundson (canoekarena@msn.com) to sign up. Limit 20 people. \nJuly 17-18 (Fri-Saturday) S. Fork of the Flathead River for 2 days.   Class I-II.   Start at Cedar Flats and use wheels for 1/4 mile of likely unimproved trail down to the river. This “put-in” is located on the Development Road 16 miles southeast of Hungry Horse Reservoir across the river from Harrison Creek. This puts us below Meadow Creek Gorge (as it is class III-IV). We can leave a car(s) at the put-in per the Forest Service Ranger and do our own shuttle. Take-out is the Crossover Campground 1 mile into the Hungry Horse Reservoir. Road distance is 16.8 miles (all gravel) and the river is about 28 miles long. Midway down the river is the Spotted Bear Ranch with cabins and meals (associated with Orvis and a major fly-fishing operation). Next to it is a forest service Spotted Bear CampGround\, and we plan to camp there July 16-18 (3 nights). No reservations\, but just $10 per night. Arrive somewhat early for best chances to get a campsite. It has running water but no electricity. The other option is the Crossover Campground; free but no reservations and less convenient to our activities. See the S. Flathead above Twin Creek gauge https://waterdata.usgs.gov/mt/nwis/uv/?site_no=12359800&PARAmeter_cd=00065\,00060\,00010 that is a few miles above the reservoir; we are expecting 1100cfs if 2020 is like 2019. See spottedbear.com and diamondrranch.com as we will have an optional (I’ll need a head count) $10++ burger dinner at the Diamond R Ranch on the 18th. Note that we can do both day trips with near-empty canoes if we get good campsites at the Spotted Bear CG. Bring flotation and helmets. Contact Karen Amundson (canoekarena@msn.com) to sign up. Limit 15 people. \nJuly 20-24 (Mon-Friday) North Fork of the Flathead from the Canada Border to Blankenship Bridge. Estimate it is 70 miles long\, so about 5 days. It is a gorgeous river\, but we will need to use bear proof containers and store food high between trees. We will use a commercial shuttle service; 1 is: https://glacierraftco.com/glacier-outdoor-store/shuttles/ . We want between 1200 and 2000cfs per the “N F Flathead River nr Columbia Falls MT” gauge; see https://waterdata.usgs.gov/mt/nwis/uv/?site_no=12355500&PARAmeter_cd=00065\,00060\,00010. The river is divided into 2 segments per differing difficulty: \nDay 1-4 from the Canada Border is Class II+ due to log and rock hazards and the need for quick maneuvers. Day 2 we would want to visit the Mercantile and Bakery (summer hours 7am to 9pm) and also the Northern Lights Saloon and Café (serve lunch and dinner every day) in Polebridge. Also there is a 2.5 mile long Transboundary Flathead River Interpretive Trail with 8 stops there. This is 1.5 river miles south of the Polebridge Ranger Station\, near a bridge over the river. Days 3 and 4 the river splits into multiple channels and we need to stick together. \nDay 5 is the final section ending at Blankenship Bridge. Class II+-III. It has the Fools Hen Rapid which is a ledge across the river with a small break that much of the water flows through. \nIf you do all 5 days\, the shuttle costs $180\, and if you opt to do days 2-4 from Ford to Big Creek Campground or N. Fork Flathead Campground\, the cost would be about $160. The road gets tougher as it goes north\, and you may get a flat tire so need a good spare and tools. \nNote you have a full day to get from the Spotted Bear Campground (prior S. Fork trip) to the shuttle company in West Glacier\, and will need to resupply your food and find your own lodging on July 19. You can explore Glacier N.P. after the trip – especially Kintla\, Bowman\, and McDonald Lakes; you will be on its western boundary for the 5 days above. Bring flotation and helmets. Limit 12 people. \n
