SUMMARY:Big Horn Canyon Lake\, Montana June 10-19\, 2022. Cancelled.
DESCRIPTION:We will start paddling June 10th 9am\, so arrive and camp June 9th at Horseshoe Bend Campground (first come\, first serve campground). Please allow flexibility in the end date of this trip\, in case a layover or weather day is needed. \nThis trip will be at the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. The lake is in northern Wyoming and southern Montana – and we will paddle about 120 miles over approximately 8-10 days \, paddling from one end of the lake\, then back to the put in (with an option to self-shuttle and end your trip half-way). Tracy and Janet paddled here in 2020 and 2021\, finding it rewarding enough to return once again. We will limit this trip to about 12 people. \nThe Bighorn Canyon Lake is long and narrow. It was created when the Yellowtail Dam was constructed on the Bighorn River. This incredibly beautiful canyon is not on many people’s radar\, do not expect big crowds. Because of the number of people in this club strangely attracted to the “G” word\, perhaps I shouldn’t use it – but here goes- The GEOLOGY here is spectacular! Although power boats are allowed\, we will likely experience much peace and solitude while paddling by the sheer canyon walls. Fishing here must be good\, that’s what most of the people come here for. We saw very few paddlers here on our previous trips. This is a flat water lake trip\, however wind and resulting waves can potentially make this a challenging paddle. There are a couple of developed campsites on the lake (picnic tables and outhouses)\, although we will primarily camp at primitive/non-developed sites. A couple of the campsites offer opportunities for some hiking. \nThis is remote bear country. Our first year paddling this canyon we saw 3 bears at different places\, although last year we only saw bear tracks and scat. So bear canisters are highly recommended – or you will need to find a way to hang your food – and no food or food odors (tooth paste\, deodorant\, soap\, anything smelly) in the tent or on you. We carried enough water to last 5-6 days\, as filtering water is not recommended. Also be prepared to deal with ticks and poison ivy. Weather can range from freezing temperatures\, to hot. \nThe put-in will be at Horseshoe Bend Campground\, near Lovell WY. We will paddle approximately 60 miles to Ok-A-Beh Marina near Ft Smith MT – where we can get fresh water. This part of the trip will take 4 or 5 days\, depending on weather conditions and how much time we spend hiking or paddling side canyons – and if we have a layover day. Then we paddle back to where we started in Horseshoe Bend Campground\, making the trip about 120-130 miles. If anyone wants to end their trip at Ok-A Beh\, they can self-shuttle at least two vehicles to here the day before the trip. There is no commercial shuttle service available here. We did this shuttle last year and it took over 7 hours\, which is why we are making this paddle “out and back”. \nWe plan on paddling around 15 miles a day. But\, depending on weather conditions\, and availability of campsites due to water levels at the time of the trip\, we might need to paddle some 20+ mile days. So\, you should be prepared and capable of paddling 20 miles per day. \nEach boat will need both MT and WY AIS stickers (go online to get them). When traveling with boats in Wyoming and Montana\, you should stop at EVERY BOAT INSPECTION station you encounter\, even if you have already been inspected. Sites at Horseshoe Bend Campground are not reservable\, first come first served – although there were ample sites available when we camped there previously. \nIf you have time to explore Big Horn Canyon National Recreation area by vehicle before or afterwards\, there is some really cool stuff to see. Devil’s Canyon overlook is only a short drive from the campground and is a recommended “must see” to give you a view of what’s to come on this paddle. There’s also a historic ranch with some well-preserved outbuildings\, and an ancient Indian encampment with over 140 documented teepee rings. If you make this a one-way trip and shuttle\, you will drive by Chief Plenty Coups State Park\, and also the Edgar Bar – for the world’s best burger and a cold one. If the Bighorn Pass is open between Sheridan and Lovell\, it’s a scenic/beautiful drive\, with a short hike to “Medicine Wheel” National Historic Landmark site. Contact one of us to be added to this trip. \nAs mentioned above\, we want to limit the trip to 12 people. People that expressed interest in this trip have first opportunity to attend\, and there are more than 12. They have been asked to commit by March 1. On March 2nd\, if 12 people have not committed to this trip\, it will be opened up to others. \n\n\n\n\nTo sign up\, please contact Tracy and Janet\, sportsmut@aol.com \nTracy Hays 970 443 8694 Janet Hays 970 586 9694

SUMMARY:Grand Lake/Shadow Mountain Lake- Day Trip. Sunday\, June 5th. Launch at 10am
DESCRIPTION: Be ready to launch at 10 am Sunday \n We will start at Grand Lake and paddle through the inlet to Shadow Mountain Lake\, hugging the east shoreline going south. At the far end of Shadow Mountain Lake\, we can explore some of the islands that are not posted as raptor nesting areas. With a little luck we might see an Osprey catch a fish. We have seen elk\, deer\, eagles and moose on this paddle. It’s a beautiful place. On the way back we will paddle to the east end of Grand Lake. It’s fun to see the many boat houses\, both rustic and modern\, that line parts of the lake shore. Then we will take a short hike to Adams Falls. We will meet at the Grand Lake Town Beach and Dock\, right across from the public restrooms on Lake Ave. It’s just a block south of downtown Grand Lake and there is plenty of free parking and no launch fees. Be ready to launch at 10am. Getting an early start is always a good idea to avoid potential afternoon winds. Bring a lunch as this trip typically takes 5 or 6 hours paddling around 8 miles. June is a great time for this trip. Adams Falls will be really kicking from spring runoff\, and fewer tourists around than later in the summer. Hope to see lots of you there. \nTo sign up\, please contact Tracy and Janet\, sportsmut@aol.com

SUMMARY:CANCELLED -RMCC Gross Reservoir Day Paddle Sat June 4 2022
DESCRIPTION:Due to Denver Water’s closure of the Osprey Pt boat access for the duration of the dam expansion project\, this trip has been cancelled. They are proposing expanding the North access\, but that won’t happen until June and may involve a 1/4 steep carry to the water. If the North Access becomes reasonable\, we may reschedule this trip later in the summer. \nPlease join us for a paddle and picnic on Gross Reservoir – a hidden gem in the foothills above Boulder. This Denver Water reservoir is nestled among beautiful Ponderosa Pine forests and Granite rock\, affording 10 miles of shoreline and 440 acres of surface area paddling. We’ll enjoy a morning paddle followed by picnic lunch at the South Boulder Creek inlet. This is an ACA-sanctioned trip which requires either an ACA membership or $10 for insurance. Owner’s name\, address\, and phone number must be legibly marked on all canoes and kayaks per Gross Reservoir ranger. Also\, only non-motorized car-top-carried boats are allowed\, and boats can be no more than 18-feet in length. \nBe at the boat ramp ready to paddle at 9am (strong winds come up most afternoon) and the access road fills early with paddle boarders and kayakers. \nDirections From Boulder: \n\nHead west on Baseline Road which becomes Flagstaff Road and then eastern Gross Dam Road.\nFollow signs to Osprey Boat Launch Site.\nDriving time is approximately 45 minutes from Baseline and Broadway.\n\nDirections from Denver:Take Highway 93 north to Highway 72. \n\nTurn left (west) on Highway 72 toward Pinecliffe to County Road 77/Gross Dam Road.\nTurn right on Gross Dam Road and follow signs to Osprey Boat Launch Site\nDrive time is approximately 1.25 hours from Denver to Gross.\n\nPlease RSVP to Bill (contact info below) by the preceding Thursday. \nCoordinators: \nBill Ashworth\, 720-352-6456 washwort at gmail.com

SUMMARY:Arkansas River and Bluegrass Memorial Day 2022 near Salida\, CO May 28 - May 30
DESCRIPTION:This will be an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a\n$10/person insurance fee. This is a combination of class II day trips and the Bluegrass on the\nRiver festival\, with our campground 3 miles from the music event. \nSee:\nhttps://bluegrassonthearkansas.org/schedule/ for the late Saturday and Sunday music. \nThe river sections that we do will be dependent on water levels\, but we are aiming for a few\nthat are class II or easier. Saturday is likely to be Cotopaxi to Texas Creek (10 miles) with a mid-\nmorning launch that allows Front Range folk to drive down early that morning. Sunday music\nstarts earlier\, so some people will head to a hot spring and others may do the Milk Run below\nBuena Vista or the section just above Salida. On Monday and if we get flows in the 600-1200cfs\nrange\, then we will go from Florence to Pueblo Reservoir where we usually see lots of birds and\nmay have a few strainers. \n***Note that this will be cold water\, so wet suits are highly recommended. Also floatation\, spare\npaddle\, bailing devices\, painters and a throw rope are required. River gauge for Parkdale is at\nhttps://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?07094500 \nCamping will be on Karen's property. There is a Port-o-let but no running water. Due to the\nlimited number of flat spots\, we are keeping the camping numbers to about 8 people in 4 or 5\ntents. A few local residents or dispersed campers will be included in the trip\, but the overall\nlimit will be 12 people.\nContact Karen Amundson (canoekarena@msn.com) to see if there is space available.

SUMMARY:RMCC Niobrara River Memorial Day 2022 near Valentine\, NE
DESCRIPTION:This will be an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a $10/person insurance fee. This is an easy\, kids-friendly class 1 river\, with our campground in the middle of the run. Each day will be about 12 miles and about 4 hours. For more information about skill level and equipment information\, see RMCC Boating Requirements and Recommendations. \nThis beautiful stretch is one of America’s premier scenic heritage waterways; we’ll see many waterfalls\, beautiful hardwood forests\, and birds! And the resident buffalo herd at the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (https://www.fws.gov/refuge/fort_niobrara/ ) often has calves this time of year. We run the river on Saturday and Sunday. Most will car camp at Smith Falls State Park\, Friday – Sunday nights; return to the Front Range after breakfast on Monday (about a 6-7 hour drive back to Denver) or continue to see the sights of Nebraska or head up to South Dakota. \nMemorial Day is shoulder season in the Sand Hills of Nebraska and we often have rain on parts of one or more days. \nNiobrara River Trail description here . \nDescription from Backpacker magazine: http://www.backpacker.com/stories/paddle-nebraska-s-niobrara-river \nRiver gage at https://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=06461500. We generally run it at between 1000 and 2000 cfs. \nSaturday\, we’ll meet at 10am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the Cornell Bridge put-in near Valentine\, down to the Smith Falls State Park campground and beach the canoes\, and then start from there again on Sunday. If you are not camping\, but meeting us in the morning\, see the note\, below for directions. \nSaturday evening – optional potluck dinner at one of the convenient campsites. There is a large group shelter generally available in case of rain. \nSunday\, we’ll meet near the boat ramp (where we took out on Saturday) at 10am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the campground to the take-out – probably at Sunny Brook Camp\, about a mile upstream of Rocky Ford. The shuttle takes over an hour\, so non-drivers should plan to relax\, hike to Smith Falls\, and/or birdwatch at the campground while the drivers are driving. We will verify the 10am shuttle start on Saturday night. \nSunday evening: Informal group happy hour possible\, but no specific group activity planned. Some of us will be checking out (i.e.\, scouting\, not running) the Norden chute and going to the The Nature Conservancy Niobrara Valley Preserve near there) (https://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/nebraska/placesweprotect/niobrara-valley-preserve.xml \nCamping \nThe campground at Smith Falls State Park doesn’t open until Maqy 1 and there is no official group site. We used to have the campground to ourselves but in recent years\, its gotten more crowded. The campground was reconfigured for 2021\, adding more sites and mixing the use between tents and RVs in all sites. You can make reservations now – here’s the link to the on-line camping reservations https://nebraskastateparks.reserveamerica.com \nYou can also call the park for reservations ( (402) 376-1306) but your best bet is on-line. The camping cost is $15/day/site plus a day use fee. \nNote: Directions to Cornell Bridge from Valentine: Take Nebraska 12 east about 4 miles to the Ft Niobrara Wildlife refuge turn-off. Turn right towards the river and then make the first right into the access parking lot. Be there by 11 am ready to shuttle and be sure to purchase your $1 wrist-band at the kiosk \nContact Bill Ashworth (washwort@gmail.com) to register for the trip if you didn’t sign up via the Planning and Permit survey

SUMMARY:Gunnison River - 3 days - May 22\, 23\, 24 Delta to Whitewater - 42 miles Class II. ACA trip
DESCRIPTION:You need to provide your own river toilet. Temps should be fairly mild – expect highs in the 50s and lows about 30. Plan for two nights camping. And plan on a very early Sunday\, to get down river hopefully before the winds kick up. \nThere are 2 Class II rapids. I don’t recall how low I have ever run the Gunny\, but I recall one summer trip that we had to walk the boats thru the rock garden instead of doing the normal run for the first CII – we will scout the first rapid. The second CII can be avoided – it is at Dominguez canyon – a left channel (with a killer undercut rock) will avoid the CII\, which is right of the island. There is also a rock dam to negotiate about 6 miles down river – it is not a problem\, but must be run at far left. This run is easier in higher water than low. \nI am still working on the shuttle arrangements – hopefully we will be able to park vehicles at the Lazy S motel in Whitewater. . – still a work in process right now. \nThis is an ACA trip – if you are an ACA member\, e-mail me your membership number – if you have an Online Waiver\, you can send me a copy of that. Except for people with a valid online waiver\, you will need to fill out an ACA waiver for the trip (BRING YOUR # with you – you need it for the waiver form). If you are not an ACA member\, then you need to pay the $10 per person insurance fee. Since this is an ACA trip\, and since it is Class II – you must have a helmet for the CII rapids (NO Bike Helmets). \nNo dogs or little kids – guests may be allowed\, if its cleared with me first. Day 1 is 28 miles\, so no slow boats \nSign up with trip coordinator\, Mat Bozek\, matbozekx@gmail.com to register for this trip or ask questions. No sign ups before March 1st! \nCAUTION – If I can obtain a permit for Loma to Westwater for May 24th\, this trip will not end at Whitewater – This will add 13 more miles and one more night to the trip so it would be 3 nights/4days and there will be one mandatory portage around the Redlands Dam – 3/10 mile portage\, and there is one more CII rock garden rapid upstream from the dam – this addition is dependent on having sufficient water and on obtaining the permit for camping in Ruby/Horsethief – dates also depend on obtaining permits for Gunnison if they are implemented.

SUMMARY:Yampa\, South Beach to Duffy Mountain May 14\, 2022 - May 15\, 2022. Trip full. Waitlist available.
DESCRIPTION:The South Beach to Duffy Mountain stretch of the Yampa is an easy flatwater/Class I trip. In early May we have had good flow and not many mosquitoes\, and not much (if any) competition for campsites. \nThis is a good trip to break out your gear from storage and get ready for the canoe season. It is also an easy trip for people new to canoeing and canoe camping. Pack a warm sleeping bag because the mornings will be frosty. As usual\, be ready for all weather conditions from pouring rain\, to snow\, and to sunshine. Also\, you can expect strong afternoon headwinds. \nThe first day’s float will be through private ranch land where the eagle nests will be seen. Many bald eagle nests are on this stretch and some may have visible babies in them. The second day we will be paddling through BLM land\, which is more scenic but without the eagle nests and without the railroad. Flocks of sheep with big scary sheep dogs may be seen\, but we will not be camping with them. \nTo register for this event\, email Trip Coordinator Dan Custer at custer.dan@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Upper Missouri National Wild & Scenic River\, Montana. May 12th- May 19th\, 2022. (8 Days\, 150 river miles) Class 1\, ACA trip
DESCRIPTION:It is 777 miles from\, Denver to the put in at Fort Benton \nWe will be camping 7 nights on the river. This is the famous “White Cliffs” / “Missouri Breaks” Section of the Missouri RIver. \nNo little kids\, no dogs\, NO WHINING allowed. \nMandatory equipment will include an alarm clock for each tent. Yes\, an alarm clock! for the mandatory 8 AM start each day. This section is known for high upriver winds\, and we will be on the water each day by 8 AM so as to get to camp by early afternoon to avoid the worst of the winds. Aside from high winds\, other hazards include rattlesnakes\, ice cold water\, falling cottonwood branches\, soft crumbly rock (on hikes) and all the usual other hazards of river travel\, as well as some (not so minor) potential for spring blizzards. \nWe will be camping in a mix of “primitive” and “developed” boat camps (and potentially just bushwhack camping if necessary). River toilets are mandatory\, except that WAG Bags are an acceptable alternative if you put them into a waterproof container. Everyone will be responsible for their own Poo – No S***!. I’m not hauling yours. The river water is not fit for drinking\, even if filtering\, as it contains agricultural runoff of fertilizers and pesticides (and it’s not known as The Big Muddy for nothing). Everyone is required to carry enough drinking water for the full trip. I expect to carry 7 gallons myself – ½ gal for first and last days and a full gallon for each day between. Recommended is a gallon per person per day. At 8 lbs/gallon\, that 56 pounds to start with (per person\, at least). \n I hope to get to camp early enough to allow time for some hiking in the afternoons. I am planning on 6 camps and 6 travel days\, with one day in reserve to use as a layover\, or makeup day if needed. May is the highest flow rate\, so I anticipate a fair current – expect to paddle at least one or two 30 mile days\, which means you need to be in good enough physical condition to paddle (not float) for 6 to 8 hours each day. If the current is flowing at 2mph and we paddle at 3 mph\, that’s 5mph and 6 hours of actual paddling time to cover 30 miles. Could be more or less depending on conditions. \nThe shuttle service in Ft. Benton has a 10 passenger van . We may opt to do our own shuttle if we arrive at Ft Benton soon enough We may need to use two shuttle services\, or maybe pre-shuttle some of our vehicles. Depending\, shuttle service will cost a minimum of $40 per driver – could be double that or more) The shuttle is 150 miles one-way\, which is why I prefer to use a shuttle service. \nFEES: aside from the shuttle fees\, you should bring enough cash to pay for camping at the pay campgrounds if we are forced to use them (varies from $5 to $12 per site) \nBLM River Trip Fees = $4 per person per day = $28 per person – we will pay at the Coal Banks Landing ranger station.. \n\n\n\n\nWhile this can be characterized as a beginner level trip\, a beginner would have to have moving water experience and be physically and mentally able to paddle the 6 to 8 hours per day\, day after day. The river is Class 1 – there are about 15 named rapids which are mainly at islands\, and would seem to be just large wave trains. In higher water\, most all of those rapids get washed out. No slow boats for this trip – you will need to be able keep up a moderate pace all day\,especially if we are fighting headwinds. \nNo sign ups before March 1st \nSign up with Trip Coordinator: Mat Bozek\, matbozekx@gmail.com to register for this trip or ask questions.

SUMMARY:White River – Rangely CO. April 23\, 2022 (Sat.) - April 25\, 2022 (Mon.) CANCELLED -- LOW WATER
DESCRIPTION:White River from Trujillo Wash to the Enron Gas Wells take out – 65 miles\, Class II \nThis is a three day\, two night trip . Plan on two nights camping on the river – that allows a full day for the long drive bacon Mon. to avoid weekend traffic – it is 285 miles from Denver to Rangely and another 30 or more miles to and from the takeout. Shuttle takes a good 2 to 3 hours round trip. Put in at Trujillo Wash and take out at Enron Gas Wells. \nThis is an ACA trip – River Rating is Class I/II (helmet required). There is one Class II rapid in Cowboy Canyon that can “generally” be avoided. Intermediate paddling skill is required – this is NOT a beginner level trip. You must be able to maneuver your canoe around many strainers and through tight corners with very strong eddy lines\, and be able to eddy out quickly. \nBLM’s Floating the White River brochure describes this portion of the River “for 100 miles between Rangely\, Colorado\, and the river’s confluence with the Green River\, the White River cuts a rugged\, scenic trough into the high desert plains of the Uintah Basin. This is a place to paddle\, watch wildlife\, and occasionally leave the river for an unforgettable hike.” \nThis is an ACA trip. Non ACA members will need to pay $10 to cover insurance. No dogs\, no little kids\, no “guests”. If you are planning on paddling with a non-RMCC member\, clear it with me first. \nNo sign ups before March 1st \nTrip Coordinator: Mat Bozek\, matbozekx@gmail.com to register for this trip or ask questions.

SUMMARY:Revised: 17th Almost Annual Joint Club Paddle - South Platte River\, Evans to Kersey or Kuner
DESCRIPTION:If you are considering joining us\, PLEASE NOTE: March 26th weather is looking good\, but this is no longer a family-friendly\, first-timer’s run — you have to be able to control your boat to avoid multiple gravel bars and strainers and to portage two dangerous dams. Please see the description in the revised flier — especially the description of dam portages — and contact Kathryn if you want to discuss it. \nThe Rocky Mountain Canoe Club\, Poudre Paddlers\, Flatwater Frogs\, Rocky Mountain Sea Kayak Club\, High Country River Rafters\, and Colorado Whitewater will be back on the South Platte River to celebrate the 2022 padding season. Our traditional put-in at Riverside Park in Evans\, Colorado reopened following restoration of severe damage from the September 2013 floods and our main takeout at Kersey has a new bridge. \nJoin us on March 26 (weather permitting) on a Class I+ paddle from Evans to Kersey Bridge or Kuner. \nRegistration is not required (but will get you an email if we have to punt to our April 2 “snow date”) and non-members are welcome to join. Because we have other clubs involved\, this is only a partial (hybrid) ACA-sanctioned trip (no ACA membership/$10 event fee required)\, but all participants must sign liability waivers. \nFor more detail\, see the Revised Joint Club Paddle Flier and then\, if desired\, contact Kathryn Mutz

SUMMARY:South Platte River: Brighton to Fort Lupton. March 19th\, 2022 (Sat.) 9:00 am - to 2:00pm
DESCRIPTION:The South Platte River from Brighton to Fort Lupton is generally a beginner friendly 9 mile trip that is lined with cottonwoods hosting numerous birds and other wildlife… a nice way to begin the paddling season. There is one mandatory portage at a dam and one boat chute drop early on that will most likely be portaged depending on conditions. Meet at Veterans Park in Brighton and be ready to begin the car shuttle no later than 9 am. Take out is at Fort Lupton’s ballfields park. Bring Rain Gear\, canoe floatation\, painters\, spare paddle and of course a PFD. Also bring a set of dry clothes in a water proof bag and a lunch or snack. Don’t pack too heavy\, the two portages are not all that easy\, and you need to cross a boulder field and fence. \nFor a detailed description of the river and parking areas go to: http://boc123.com/Kayak/RiverGuide/South_Platte_Brighton_City.cfm \nThis will be an ACA trip – e-mail your aca # to mat. If not an ACA member\, bring $10 per person for the insurance fee. Potentially the trip may be run on Sunday depending on the weather. \nWarning! – there are now multiple strainers (trees) in the river with a lot of tight turns – you need to have good boat handling skills to avoid them. \nNo sign ups before March 1st \nSign up with Trip Coordinator: Mat Bozek\, matbozekx@gmail.com to register for this trip or ask questions.

SUMMARY:Chatfield Reservoir
DESCRIPTION:Don’t put your boat away quite yet. This is a beautiful time of year to paddle Chatfield Reservoir. The cottonwood trees are likely to be displaying their golden fall colors creating a stunning backdrop for the large number of birds (pelicans\, cormorants\, Canadian Geese\, king fishers\, etc.) that make the reservoir their home. We will be paddling in the no-wake zone that requires power boats to slow down enough to not create a large wake\, plus there are considerably fewer boats on the water in the fall offering a much quieter\, more peaceful paddling experience. Please be at the designated meeting place by 9:00 a.m. and be ready to paddle by 9:30. \nYou will need to pay a daily State Park pass of $10 per vehicle unless you have an annual State Parks sticker. This is an ACA sanctioned trip so a $10 liability insurance fee will be collected for all non-ACA members. If you are a ACA member please provide your ACA membership number to the Trip Coordinator before the trip. \nTrip Coordinators are Kit and Henry Williams. Email Kit at kitrynwilliams@gmail.com to register.
