SUMMARY:Upper Missouri National Wild & Scenic River\, Montana
DESCRIPTION: 8 Days\,May 9th    thru   May 16th \n150 river miles   Class 1  it is an ACA trip \nIt is 777 miles from\, Denver to the putin at Fort Benton \nContact Trip Coordinator to register: Mat Bozek\, matbozekx@gmail.com \nWe will be camping 7 nights on the river.  This is the famous “White Cliffs” / “Missouri Breaks”  \nSection of the Missouri RIver.   No little kids\, no dogs\, NO WHINING allowed. \nMandatory equipment will include an alarm clock for each tent.  Yes\, an alarm clock! for the mandatory 8 AM start each day.  This section is known for high upriver winds\, and we will be on the water each day by 8 AM so as to get to camp by early afternoon to avoid the worst of the winds.   Aside from high winds\, other hazards include rattlesnakes\, ice cold water\, falling cottonwood branches\, soft crumbly rock (on hikes) and all the usual other hazards of river travel\, as well as some (minor) potential for spring blizzards. \nWe will be camping in a mix of “primitive” and “developed” boat camps (and potentially just bushwhack camping if necessary).   River toilets are mandatory\, except that WAG Bags are an acceptable alternative if you put them into a waterproof container.  Everyone will be responsible for their own Poo – No S***!.  I’m not hauling yours.  The river water is not fit for drinking\, even if filtering\, as it contains agricultural runoff of fertilizers and pesticides (and it’s not known as The Big Muddy for nothing).  Everyone is required to carry enough drinking water for the full trip.  I expect to carry 7 gallons myself – ½ gal for first and last days and a full gallon for each day between.  Recommended is a gallon per person per day.   At 8 lbs/gallon\, that 56 pounds to start with (per person\, at least).   \n I hope to get to camp early enough to allow time for some hiking in the afternoons.  I am planning on 6 camps and 6 travel days\, with one day in reserve to use as a layover\, or makeup day if needed.  May is the highest flow rate\, so I anticipate a fair current – expect to paddle at least one or two 30 mile days\, which means you need to be in good enough physical condition to paddle (not float) for 6 to 8 hours each day. If the current is flowing at 2mph and we paddle at 3 mph\, that’s 5mph and 6 hours of actual paddling time to cover 30 miles.  Could be more or less depending on conditions. \nThe shuttle service in Ft. Benton has a 10 passenger van – we may have to adlib if there will be more drivers (based on those who signed up at the January planning party\, I already have 12 potential drivers).   We may need to use two shuttle services\, or maybe pre-shuttle some of our vehicles.  Depending\, shuttle service will cost a minimum of $40 per driver – could be double that)  The shuttle is 150 miles one-way\, which is why I prefer to use a shuttle service. \nFEES:  aside from the shuttle fees\, you should bring enough cash to pay for camping at the pay campgrounds if we are forced to use them (varies from $5 to $12 per site) \nBLM River Trip Fees = $4 per person per day = $28 per person – we will pay at the putin.

If you wish to be added to the waiting list\, please contact Trip Coordinator Dan Custer at custer.dan@gmail.com \n  \nThe South Beach to Duffy Mountain stretch of the Yampa an easy flatwater/Class I trip.  Last year we had very good flow\, even though later in the summer the river had extremely low water.  Early May is a good time to float the Yampa because the bugs will not be a problem\, there should not be competition for campsites\, and for the last couple of years the water level in early May has been excellent. \nThis is a good trip to break your gear out of storage and get ready for the canoe season.  It is also an easy trip for people new to canoeing and canoe camping to go out on an overnight trip.  Pack a warm sleeping bag because the morning will likely be frosty. \nThe first day’s float will be through private ranch land\, and that is where the eagle nests will be seen.  The last two years we not only spotted bald eagles and their nests\, we also saw baby eagles in the nests.  The second day will be paddling through BLM land\, which is more scenic but without the eagle nests.  Flocks of sheep with big scary sheep dogs may be on river left\, but we will not be camping with them. \nTo register for this event\, email Trip Coordinator Dan Custer at custer.dan@gmail.com.

Please contact Tracy Hays to be added to this list\, sportsmut@aol.com \nPaddle the beautiful Buffalo River\, America’s first designated Wild and Scenic River  in Arkansas.  The Buffalo is known for drastic water fluctuations\, from not enough water to paddle the upper section\, to stay away-it’s flooded.  We will hope for just right.  The plan is to paddle from Ponca to Buffalo City\, about 125 miles.  We will be primitive camping along the river.  The approximate cost for the car shuttle is about $110 per vehicle. DESCRIPTION:April 11th and 12th \nGunnison River from Escalante to Whitewater – 29 miles\, Class II \nContact Trip coordinator Mat Bozek at matbozekx@gmail.com to register \n  \nThis is an ACA trip – if you are an ACA member\, e-mail me your membership number – if you have an Online Waiver\, you can send me a copy of that.  Except for people with a valid online waiver\, you will need to fill out an ACA waiver for the trip (BRING YOUR # with you – you need it for the waiver form).  If you are not an ACA member\, then you need to pay the $5 per person insurance fee. Since this is an ACA trip\, and since it is Class II – you must have a helmet for the CII rapids (NO Bike Helmets). \nI am still working on the shuttle arrangements – hopefully we will be able to park vehicles at the Lazy S motel in Whitewater. – still a work in process right now. \nI will bring a toilet and firepan.  Temps should be fairly mild – expect highs in the 50s and lows about 30.  I plan on going past Dominguez canyon on Saturday to make a shorter day Sunday (with an early start)\, hopefully before the winds kick up. \nThere are 2 Class II rapids.  I don’t recall how low I have ever run the Gunny\, but I recall one summer trip that we had to walk the boats thru the rock garden instead of doing the normal run for the first CII – we will scout the first rapid.  The second CII can be avoided – it is at Dominguez canyon – a left channel (with a killer undercut rock) will avoid the CII\, which is right of the island. There is also a rock dam to negotiate about 6 miles downriver – it is not a problem\, but must be run at far left.  This run is easier in higher water than low.

DESCRIPTION:The South Platte River from Brighton to Fort Lupton is generally a beginner friendly 9 mile trip that is lined with cottonwoods hosting numerous birds and other wildlife… a nice way to begin the paddling season. There is one mandatory portage at a dam and one boat chute drop early on that will most likely be  portaged depending on conditions. Meet at Veterans Park in Brighton and be ready to begin the car shuttle no later than 9 am. Take out is at the Fort Lupton’s ballfields park. Bring Rain Gear\, canoe floatation\, painters\, spare paddle and of course a PFD. DESCRIPTION:April 4th\, 2020 from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm      \n\n The South Platte River from Brighton to Fort Lupton is generally a beginner friendly 9 mile trip that is lined with cottonwoods hosting numerous birds and other wildlife… a nice way to begin the\npaddling season. There is one mandatory portage at a dam and one boat chute\ndrop early on that will most likely be portaged depending on conditions.\nMeet at Veterans Park in Brighton and be ready to begin the car shuttle no\nlater than 9:00 am. Take out is at the Fort Lupton’s ballfields park. Bring\nRain Gear\, canoe floatation\, painters\, spare paddle and of course a PFD. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 11 from 1:30 – 4:30 pm — Come one\, come all! If you love canoeing be sure to put this meeting on your calendar. This is the time RMCC members\, family\, and guests come together to learn about possible canoe trips and classes and help determine the club’s 2020 event calendar. Trip coordinators are recruited and dates selected during this meeting. (Popular trips often fill up during this party.) Many multi-day trips require permits and the odds of getting a permit increases considerably if a group of people put in for the same dates (see information about the permit lottery application process below). Time will be given at the end of the meeting for people wishing to register for the same lottery  permitted trip so they can plan and coordinate possible dates to increase our collective chances of winning a permit. For the list of river and lake trips RMCC has offered in previous years\, including the ones that require a permit\, click the following link: List of Permit and non-permit rivers. \nThis is also an excellent meeting for people who are not members of RMCC but wish to know more about the club and its activities. If you can’t attend\, consider sending Lynne Carpenter\, the club’s Trip Master\, the names of the trips in which you are interested so the trip coordinators can add you to their list of possible participants. \nIf you are more of an adrenaline junkie or like longer trips\, you can look at American Whitewater’s list of the lottery permitted rivers here. Lottery permitted rivers are typically multi-day\, class III and IV rivers throughout the western US. The permit lottery application season is open from Dec1 to January 31 for almost all lottery rivers (at least one exception: the Rio Chama lottery\, which closes on 1/15.) Also consider applying for the Grand Canyon 2021 lottery! We have experienced boaters who can serve as trip leaders  and advisors to get paddlers down the more technical /difficult and logistically challenging rivers (by canoe\, duckie\, raft\, etc.). \nPlan on bringing an appetizer or snack to share and a beverage of your choice. Please also consider bringing your own reusable plate\, bowl\, cup\, and utensils to reduce waste. \nThe party is being held at: \nGreenway Park Clubhouse\n110 Greenway Drive\, Broomfield\, Co  80020\nIt is in Broomfield one block south of 120th Avenue and a short block East of Main St. \nFor those of you wonderful volunteers who are willing to be a trip coordinator or co-coordinator in 2020\, please let Lynne know which trips you wish to lead and possible dates. DESCRIPTION:  \nA WAITING LIST HAS BEEN STARTED FOR THE OKEFENOKEE PART OF THE TRIP BUT THE 7 DAY SUWANEE RIVER SECTION IS STILL OPEN. \nPaddle from Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge\, Georgia to Spirit of The Suwanee Music Park\, Live Oak Florida  \nPart A-Okefenokee Swamp \nKingfisher Landing\, NE side of Okefenokee to Stephen Foster State Park\, West side of Okefenokee. 5 days 4 nights\, the longest period we are allowed to stay in the Okefenokee. \nRoute- Kingfisher Landing to Maul Hammock-12 miles\, to Big Water-8 miles\, to Floyds Island-7 miles\, to Canal Run-4 miles\, to Stephen Foster State Park-7 miles.  38 Miles total. \nPart B-Suwanee River \nStephen Foster State Park GA\, to Spirit of the Suwanee Music Park\, Live Oak FL. \nRoute- We will follow the Suwanee River for 7 days and 6 nights\, camping at various places\, possibly a campground\, sand bars and a river camp.  About 96 miles. \nCosts \nShuttle from Live Oak to Kingfisher Landing around $50 per person\, provided at least 4 people are on this trip.  Okefenokee fees.  $10 per group processing fee\, $15 per person per night camping fee.  Griffs Fish Camp (just a few miles past SF SP\, our 1st camp on the Suwanee) charges $5 per person to camp there.  They have showers and toilets.  Sand bar camping is free.  Woods Ferry River Camp\, our last camp on the Suwanee has showers\, toilets\, screened in shelters and is free.  Total per person minimum is $120. Canoes are available for rent at the Canoe Outpost at the Music Park if you don’t want to haul yours across country.   As always\, plan for unexpected costs and things that I may have forgotten. \nGroup size \nBecause platforms for camping in the Okefenokee swamp are only 20’x28’ we plan to limit our group to about 12 people for this section of the trip. DESCRIPTION:Desolation and Gray Canyons\, Green River\, Utah\nSeptember 10-18 \nCome explore a desert canyon (Desolation) just added to America’s wilderness areas in February (along with Labyrinth Canyon\, Muddy Creek and the San Rafael Swell). \nThese two desert sandstone canyons provide an 84-mile paddle between the put-in at Sand Wash near Duchesne\, Utah and the take-out at Swaseys Rapid above Green River\, Utah. The run includes several class two and three or four class three rapids. SUMMARY:San Juan River\, September 8th – 14th
DESCRIPTION:San Juan River\, September 8th – 14th \nThis trip is a 7-day 6-night float on the lower part of the San Juan River from Mexican Hat to Clay\nHills Crossing.  Come prepared for lots of hiking.  We’ll plan to stop for hikes at the Mendenhall\nLoop\, the Honaker Trail\, Government Rapid canyon\, Oljeto Wash\, and at Slickhorn Canyon where\nwe’ll try to camp and spend a half-day or more. \nThe San Juan is a Class III river with multiple Class II drops and one solidly Class III rapid\n(Government Rapid) that may be possible to line or portage. Participants are expected to have the\nappropriate experience and skills. Although the San Juan is generally low this time of year\, we may\nhave higher water levels this year. \nCost:  $20/person for the river permit and $24/person for 2 days of camping and hiking on the\nNavajo Nation.  Total Cost: $44/person.  There will be additional costs to park cars long term at\nMexican Hat\, and if we decide to use a commercial shuttle service. \nPut in:  Sunday\, September 8 th  Mexican Hat\nTake out: Saturday\, September 14 th \, Clay Hills Crossing \nAs of mid-July there are 4 spots open. DESCRIPTION:RMCC members and guests are welcome to float the North Platte River from Glendo Reservoir almost to Guernsey Reservoir. This is a fun\, day long paddling trip and I hope you can join us. The float is on Saturday\, July 20.  Most will be camping in Two Moon Campground in Glendo State Park on Friday night (its about a 3 hour drive from Denver) before the trip as well as Saturday night for those who choose (there will be an optional  potluck that night) \nFull details can be found here: Glendo to Guernsey details. Please read the linked document as it has a lot of important information. It is also mandatory that you have a Wyoming Game & Fish Invasive Species decal for your boat and your boat also needs to be inspected when entering Wyoming.
