DESCRIPTION:April 11th and 12th \nGunnison River from Escalante to Whitewater – 29 miles\, Class II \nContact Trip coordinator Mat Bozek at matbozekx@gmail.com to register \n  \nThis is an ACA trip – if you are an ACA member\, e-mail me your membership number – if you have an Online Waiver\, you can send me a copy of that.  Except for people with a valid online waiver\, you will need to fill out an ACA waiver for the trip (BRING YOUR # with you – you need it for the waiver form).  If you are not an ACA member\, then you need to pay the $5 per person insurance fee. Since this is an ACA trip\, and since it is Class II – you must have a helmet for the CII rapids (NO Bike Helmets). \nI am still working on the shuttle arrangements – hopefully we will be able to park vehicles at the Lazy S motel in Whitewater. – still a work in process right now. \nI will bring a toilet and firepan.  Temps should be fairly mild – expect highs in the 50s and lows about 30.  I plan on going past Dominguez canyon on Saturday to make a shorter day Sunday (with an early start)\, hopefully before the winds kick up. \nThere are 2 Class II rapids.  I don’t recall how low I have ever run the Gunny\, but I recall one summer trip that we had to walk the boats thru the rock garden instead of doing the normal run for the first CII – we will scout the first rapid.  The second CII can be avoided – it is at Dominguez canyon – a left channel (with a killer undercut rock) will avoid the CII\, which is right of the island. There is also a rock dam to negotiate about 6 miles downriver – it is not a problem\, but must be run at far left.  This run is easier in higher water than low.

DESCRIPTION:The South Platte River from Brighton to Fort Lupton is generally a beginner friendly 9 mile trip that is lined with cottonwoods hosting numerous birds and other wildlife… a nice way to begin the paddling season. There is one mandatory portage at a dam and one boat chute drop early on that will most likely be  portaged depending on conditions. Meet at Veterans Park in Brighton and be ready to begin the car shuttle no later than 9 am. Take out is at the Fort Lupton’s ballfields park. Bring Rain Gear\, canoe floatation\, painters\, spare paddle and of course a PFD. SUMMARY:RMCC Annual Planning/Permit Party!
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 11 from 1:30 – 4:30 pm — Come one\, come all! If you love canoeing be sure to put this meeting on your calendar. This is the time RMCC members\, family\, and guests come together to learn about possible canoe trips and classes and help determine the club’s 2020 event calendar. Trip coordinators are recruited and dates selected during this meeting. (Popular trips often fill up during this party.) Many multi-day trips require permits and the odds of getting a permit increases considerably if a group of people put in for the same dates (see information about the permit lottery application process below). Time will be given at the end of the meeting for people wishing to register for the same lottery  permitted trip so they can plan and coordinate possible dates to increase our collective chances of winning a permit. For the list of river and lake trips RMCC has offered in previous years\, including the ones that require a permit\, click the following link: List of Permit and non-permit rivers. \nThis is also an excellent meeting for people who are not members of RMCC but wish to know more about the club and its activities. If you can’t attend\, consider sending Lynne Carpenter\, the club’s Trip Master\, the names of the trips in which you are interested so the trip coordinators can add you to their list of possible participants. \nIf you are more of an adrenaline junkie or like longer trips\, you can look at American Whitewater’s list of the lottery permitted rivers here. Lottery permitted rivers are typically multi-day\, class III and IV rivers throughout the western US. The permit lottery application season is open from Dec1 to January 31 for almost all lottery rivers (at least one exception: the Rio Chama lottery\, which closes on 1/15.) Also consider applying for the Grand Canyon 2021 lottery! We have experienced boaters who can serve as trip leaders  and advisors to get paddlers down the more technical /difficult and logistically challenging rivers (by canoe\, duckie\, raft\, etc.). \nPlan on bringing an appetizer or snack to share and a beverage of your choice. Please also consider bringing your own reusable plate\, bowl\, cup\, and utensils to reduce waste. \nThe party is being held at: \nGreenway Park Clubhouse\n110 Greenway Drive\, Broomfield\, Co  80020\nIt is in Broomfield one block south of 120th Avenue and a short block East of Main St. \nFor those of you wonderful volunteers who are willing to be a trip coordinator or co-coordinator in 2020\, please let Lynne know which trips you wish to lead and possible dates. DESCRIPTION:  \nA WAITING LIST HAS BEEN STARTED FOR THE OKEFENOKEE PART OF THE TRIP BUT THE 7 DAY SUWANEE RIVER SECTION IS STILL OPEN. \nPaddle from Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge\, Georgia to Spirit of The Suwanee Music Park\, Live Oak Florida  \nPart A-Okefenokee Swamp \nKingfisher Landing\, NE side of Okefenokee to Stephen Foster State Park\, West side of Okefenokee. 5 days 4 nights\, the longest period we are allowed to stay in the Okefenokee. \nRoute- Kingfisher Landing to Maul Hammock-12 miles\, to Big Water-8 miles\, to Floyds Island-7 miles\, to Canal Run-4 miles\, to Stephen Foster State Park-7 miles.  38 Miles total. \nPart B-Suwanee River \nStephen Foster State Park GA\, to Spirit of the Suwanee Music Park\, Live Oak FL. \nRoute- We will follow the Suwanee River for 7 days and 6 nights\, camping at various places\, possibly a campground\, sand bars and a river camp.  About 96 miles. \nCosts \nShuttle from Live Oak to Kingfisher Landing around $50 per person\, provided at least 4 people are on this trip.  Okefenokee fees.  $10 per group processing fee\, $15 per person per night camping fee.  Griffs Fish Camp (just a few miles past SF SP\, our 1st camp on the Suwanee) charges $5 per person to camp there.  They have showers and toilets.  Sand bar camping is free.  Woods Ferry River Camp\, our last camp on the Suwanee has showers\, toilets\, screened in shelters and is free.  Total per person minimum is $120. Canoes are available for rent at the Canoe Outpost at the Music Park if you don’t want to haul yours across country.   As always\, plan for unexpected costs and things that I may have forgotten. \nGroup size \nBecause platforms for camping in the Okefenokee swamp are only 20’x28’ we plan to limit our group to about 12 people for this section of the trip. DESCRIPTION:Desolation and Gray Canyons\, Green River\, Utah\nSeptember 10-18 \nCome explore a desert canyon (Desolation) just added to America’s wilderness areas in February (along with Labyrinth Canyon\, Muddy Creek and the San Rafael Swell). \nThese two desert sandstone canyons provide an 84-mile paddle between the put-in at Sand Wash near Duchesne\, Utah and the take-out at Swaseys Rapid above Green River\, Utah. The run includes several class two and three or four class three rapids. DESCRIPTION:San Juan River\, September 8th – 14th \nThis trip is a 7-day 6-night float on the lower part of the San Juan River from Mexican Hat to Clay\nHills Crossing.  Come prepared for lots of hiking.  We’ll plan to stop for hikes at the Mendenhall\nLoop\, the Honaker Trail\, Government Rapid canyon\, Oljeto Wash\, and at Slickhorn Canyon where\nwe’ll try to camp and spend a half-day or more. \nThe San Juan is a Class III river with multiple Class II drops and one solidly Class III rapid\n(Government Rapid) that may be possible to line or portage. Participants are expected to have the\nappropriate experience and skills. Although the San Juan is generally low this time of year\, we may\nhave higher water levels this year. \nCost:  $20/person for the river permit and $24/person for 2 days of camping and hiking on the\nNavajo Nation.  Total Cost: $44/person.  There will be additional costs to park cars long term at\nMexican Hat\, and if we decide to use a commercial shuttle service. \nPut in:  Sunday\, September 8 th  Mexican Hat\nTake out: Saturday\, September 14 th \, Clay Hills Crossing \nAs of mid-July there are 4 spots open. DESCRIPTION:RMCC members and guests are welcome to float the North Platte River from Glendo Reservoir almost to Guernsey Reservoir. This is a fun\, day long paddling trip and I hope you can join us. SUMMARY:RMCC Memorial Day Niobrara River - survived the flood; trip is a GO
DESCRIPTION:This will be an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a $5/person insurance fee.  This is an easy\, kids-friendly class 1 river\, with our campground in the middle of the run.  Each day will be about 12 miles and about 4 hours. Contact Bill Ashworth (washwort@gmail.com) to register for the trip. \nThis beautiful stretch is one of America’s premier scenic heritage waterways; we’ll see many waterfalls\, beautiful hardwood forests\, and birds!  And the resident buffalo herd at the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (https://www.fws.gov/refuge/fort_niobrara/ ) often has calves this time of year.  We run the river on Saturday and Sunday. Most will car camp at Smith Falls State Park\, Friday – Sunday nights (May 24-27); return to the Front Range after breakfast on Monday (about a 6-7 hour drive back to Denver) or continue to see the sights of Nebraska or head up to South Dakota. \nNiobrara River Trail description here .  \nDescription from Backpacker magazine:  http://www.backpacker.com/stories/paddle-nebraska-s-niobrara-river \nRiver gage at https://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=06461500.  We ran it at about 1500 cfs in 2017.  \nSaturday\, we’ll meet at 11am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the Cornell Bridge put-in near Valentine\, down to the State Park campground and beach the canoes and then start from then again on Sunday.   If you are not camping\, but meeting us in the morning\, see the note\, below for directions. \nSaturday evening – optional potluck appetizers and dinner at one of the convenient campsites (location to be announced and look for the RMCC banner).  There is a large group shelter generallyavailable in case of rain. \nSunday\, we’ll meet near the boat ramp (where we took out on Saturday) at 10am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the campground to the take-out – probably at Sunny Brook Camp\, about a mile upstream of Rocky Ford.  The shuttle takes over an hour\, so non-drivers should plan to relax\, hike to Smith Falls\, and/or birdwatch at the campground while the drivers are driving. DESCRIPTION:White River from Trujillo Wash to the Enron Gas Wells take out  – 65 miles\, Class II \nThis is a three day\, two night trip .  Plan on two nights camping on the river –  but with a strong group\, we may opt to do the trip in two days/one night depending on flow – that  would allow a full day for the long drive back – it is 285 miles from Denver to Rangely and another 30 or more miles to and from the takeout.  Shuttle takes a good 2 to 3 hours round trip. Put in at Trujillo Wash and take out at Enron Gas Wells. \nRiver Rating is Class I/II  (helmet required). There is one Class II rapid in Cowboy Canyon that can “generally” be avoided.  Intermediate paddling skill is required – this is NOT a beginner level trip. You must be able to maneuver your canoe around many strainers and through tight corners with very strong eddy lines\, and be able to eddy out quickly. \nBLM’s Floating the White River brochure describes this portion of the River “for 100 miles between Rangely\, Colorado\, and the river’s confluence with the Green River\, the White River cuts a rugged\, scenic trough into the high desert plains of the Uintah Basin. This is a place to paddle\, watch wildlife\, and occasionally leave the river for an unforgettable hike.” \nThis is an ACA trip. DESCRIPTION:Essentials of Canoeing: flatwater and moving water\nMay 11 & 12\, 2019\nThis is a Day and a half class on May 11 and 12. The cost is $40 per person for the entire class (or $25 per person for just the flatwater class on May 11) to be paid before the class. Students can enroll for only the flatwater day if they desire. If you are not a current American Canoe Association (ACA) member\, there is an additional $5 insurance fee; if you are a current ACA member please provide that number to the class instructors. Lead instructors are Lynne Carpenter and Debbie Hinde. May 18 has been designated as the back-up date in case of bad weather. Skills will include “reading” water\, safety considerations on moving water\, advanced canoe strokes\, and specific canoe maneuvers including eddy turns\, ferries\, and S turns.\nThis class will be held in on a river near the Denver Metropolitan area. DESCRIPTION:Join RMCC for an afternoon clinic\, learning to set up and pack your canoe for river tripping. This is a dry land exercise and will prepare you to rig your boat for moving water and what and how to pack for weekend and multi-day camping outings. Bill will cover rigging and techniques for efficient and secure packing. We’ll start at 1:00 pm in Boulder at Bill’s home\, and we’ll finish up by 4pm and there will be an optional pot-luck taco meal afterwards (Cinco de Quatro?)
