SUMMARY:RMCC Memorial Day Niobrara River - survived the flood; trip is a GO
DESCRIPTION:This will be an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a $5/person insurance fee.  This is an easy\, kids-friendly class 1 river\, with our campground in the middle of the run.  Each day will be about 12 miles and about 4 hours. Contact Bill Ashworth (washwort@gmail.com) to register for the trip. \nThis beautiful stretch is one of America’s premier scenic heritage waterways; we’ll see many waterfalls\, beautiful hardwood forests\, and birds!  And the resident buffalo herd at the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (https://www.fws.gov/refuge/fort_niobrara/ ) often has calves this time of year.  We run the river on Saturday and Sunday. Most will car camp at Smith Falls State Park\, Friday – Sunday nights (May 24-27); return to the Front Range after breakfast on Monday (about a 6-7 hour drive back to Denver) or continue to see the sights of Nebraska or head up to South Dakota. \nNiobrara River Trail description here .  \nDescription from Backpacker magazine:  http://www.backpacker.com/stories/paddle-nebraska-s-niobrara-river \nRiver gage at https://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=06461500.  We ran it at about 1500 cfs in 2017.  \nSaturday\, we’ll meet at 11am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the Cornell Bridge put-in near Valentine\, down to the State Park campground and beach the canoes and then start from then again on Sunday.   If you are not camping\, but meeting us in the morning\, see the note\, below for directions. \nSaturday evening – optional potluck appetizers and dinner at one of the convenient campsites (location to be announced and look for the RMCC banner).  There is a large group shelter generallyavailable in case of rain. \nSunday\, we’ll meet near the boat ramp (where we took out on Saturday) at 10am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the campground to the take-out – probably at Sunny Brook Camp\, about a mile upstream of Rocky Ford.  The shuttle takes over an hour\, so non-drivers should plan to relax\, hike to Smith Falls\, and/or birdwatch at the campground while the drivers are driving. We will verify the 10am shuttle start on Saturday night. \nSunday evening: Informal group happy hour possible\, but no specific group activity planned.  Some of us will be checking out (i.e.\, scouting\, not running) the Norden chute and going to the TNC Niobrara Valley Preserve near there) (https://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/nebraska/placesweprotect/niobrara-valley-preserve.xml );  see a recent TNC blog at: https://prairieecologist.com/2018/05/04/photo-of-the-week-may-4-2018/ \nCamping \nThe campground doesn’t open until just before Memorial Day and there is no official group site.  Tents will go down by the river and RVs and trailers will be put on the slope across the road from the tents.  Several sites are VERY large and could easily accommodate 4 or 5 tents if folks would like a group setting or just couldn’t get a reservation.  Smith Falls State Park (402) 376-1306)\, $5/person/night\, showers included.  Phone reservations will likely be taken starting May 6th.    \nNote: Directions to Cornell Bridge from Valentine:  Take Nebraska 12 east about 4 miles to the Ft Niobrara Wildlife refuge turn-off. Turn right towards the river and then make the first right into the access parking lot. Be there by 11 am ready to shuttle and be sure to purchase your $1 wrist-band at the kiosk. \nIMPORTANT: Valentine is on CENTRAL TIME.

SUMMARY:White River - Rangely Co
DESCRIPTION:White River from Trujillo Wash to the Enron Gas Wells take out  – 65 miles\, Class II \nThis is a three day\, two night trip .  Plan on two nights camping on the river –  but with a strong group\, we may opt to do the trip in two days/one night depending on flow – that  would allow a full day for the long drive back – it is 285 miles from Denver to Rangely and another 30 or more miles to and from the takeout.  Shuttle takes a good 2 to 3 hours round trip. Put in at Trujillo Wash and take out at Enron Gas Wells. \nRiver Rating is Class I/II  (helmet required). There is one Class II rapid in Cowboy Canyon that can “generally” be avoided.  Intermediate paddling skill is required – this is NOT a beginner level trip. You must be able to maneuver your canoe around many strainers and through tight corners with very strong eddy lines\, and be able to eddy out quickly. \nBLM’s Floating the White River brochure describes this portion of the River “for 100 miles between Rangely\, Colorado\, and the river’s confluence with the Green River\, the White River cuts a rugged\, scenic trough into the high desert plains of the Uintah Basin. This is a place to paddle\, watch wildlife\, and occasionally leave the river for an unforgettable hike.” \nThis is an ACA trip. Non ACA members will need to pay $5 to cover insurance. \nTrip Coordinator: Mat Bozek\, matbozekx@gmail.com to register for this trip or ask questions. \nhttps://www.blm.gov/download/file/fid/3743

SUMMARY:Gunnison River: Escalante to Whitewater
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we paddle the Gunnison River from Escalante to Whitewater (Sat 5/4 thru Sun 5/5). It is a   28 mile trip with two Class II rapids\, so helmets required on this ACA trip. We will camp somewhere well below Dominguez canyon to make for a shorter second day\, to avoid wind issues.  Primitive camping. \nThis is generally a beginner friendly river\, but has one potentially difficult rapid\, which can be portaged or perhaps lined thru a rock garden.  The first CII can potentially be avoided if the water is high enough for a sneak route; the second CII can be avoided using far left channel at Dominguez canyon. \nACA trip\, non ACA members must pay $5 to cover insurance.  Helmets Required. \nContact trip coordinator Mat Bozek at matbozekx@gmail.com to sign up or for information. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Yampa River: South Beach to Duffy Mountain
DESCRIPTION:THIS TRIP IS CURRENTLY FULL AND A WAITING LIST HAS BEEN STARTED. If you wish to be added to the waiting list\, please contact Trip Coordinator Dan Custer at custer.dan@gmail.com \n  \nThe South Beach to Duffy Mountain stretch of the Yampa an easy flatwater/Class I trip.  Last year we had very good flow\, even though later in the summer the river had extremely low water.  Early May is a good time to float the Yampa because the bugs will not be a problem\, there should not be competition for campsites\, and for the last couple of years the water level in early May has been excellent. \nThis is a good trip to break your gear out of storage and get ready for the canoe season.  It is also an easy trip for people new to canoeing and canoe camping to go out on an overnight trip.  Pack a warm sleeping bag because the morning will likely be frosty. \nThe first day’s float will be through private ranch land\, and that is where the eagle nests will be seen.  The last two years we not only spotted bald eagles and their nests\, we also saw baby eagles in the nests.  The second day will be paddling through BLM land\, which is more scenic but without the eagle nests.  Flocks of sheep with big scary sheep dogs may be on river left\, but we will not be camping with them. \nTo register for this event\, email Trip Coordinator Dan Custer at custer.dan@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Colorado River: Ruby-Horsethief
DESCRIPTION:Lynne Carpenter has a Ruby-Horsethief permit for up to 14 people (total) launching on Friday\, April 26 and taking out on Sunday\, April 28. Contact Lynne at  lynnecarpenter@gmail.com to register for this trip. \nThis stretch is located on the Colorado River where it crosses the CO – UT border. River mileage has traditionally been measured from the Loma put-in\, NOT the Robb State Park put-in that we will be using (which is about 3 miles upstream from Loma). So if you do your own research (which I highly encourage) you’ll see mile markers – those refer to miles downstream from Loma put-in. \nReady for Shuttle at the put-in: 2 pm April 26 (the shuttle takes at least 45 minutes each way)\nLaunch: 4pm on Friday\, April 26\nPut-in: The boat ramp at Robb State Park\, Fruita Section (three miles upstream from the Loma launch). There are multiple parts of Robb State Park. Use this address:\nJames M. Robb – Colorado River State Park – Fruita Section\, 595 595 Highway 340\, Fruita\, CO 81521.  The put-in is about 4 hours drive from the west side of Denver metro area (Golden area).  (It is safer to leave our shuttle vehicle at the state park than at the Loma put-in.)\nCampsite Friday night\, 4/26: Rattlesnake Canyon (~6-7 miles from the Robb State Park put-in\, 3.2 river miles from the Loma put-in)\nCampsite Saturday Night\, 4/27: Mee Canyon (~15-16 miles from the Robb State Park put-in\, 12.7 river miles from Loma put-in).\nTake-out:  Westwater Ranger Station in Utah (26 miles from the Robb State Park put-in\, ~23 miles from the Loma Put-in) \nDescription: \nThe Ruby-Horsethief section of the Colorado River runs through beautiful red rock canyons and has many hiking opportunities offering both solitude and exploration. This section of the canyon\, from Fruita\, Colorado\, to Westwater\, Utah\, is a ~26-mile stretch of mostly flat water with sections of Class I and II rapids. The “Black Rocks” section is composed of rock known as Vishnu schist\, which dates back about 1.7 billion years. This same rock is exposed in certain sections of the Grand Canyon. If the weather and water levels are reasonable (contact me if you have any questions) this float is appropriate for relatively inexperienced canoeists and boaters. There is one class II rapid in the Black Rocks section of the river\, which we can scout if requested. It can be relatively-easily be sneaked on river right. \nRuby Horsethief Canyon is 25 miles through a spectacular river canyon\, a desert environment\, and very mild waters. There is an abundance of wildlife in the area including great blue herons\, bald eagles\, peregrine falcons\, mule deer\, and desert bighorn sheep. Look up in old cottonwoods trees and you are likely to spot nests and eagles. \nAfter we shuttle our vehicles to the takeout at Westwater Ranger Station\, we’ll put-in at Robb State Park and float about 6 miles down to Rattlesnake Canyon (campsite first evening). We hike and play in Rattlesnake Canyon Friday night and Saturday morning. Late Saturday morning\, we’ll float down to our second campsite at Mee Canyon. We hike and play in Mee Canyon Saturday afternoon and Sunday early morning. We float the remaining ~13 miles out to the takeout (Westwater Ranger Station) Sunday morning\, load up\, and drive home. \nThe Denver and Rio Grande Railroad parallels the river from Salt Wash until Westwater on river right\, so bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. All boaters are required to abide by Bureau of Land Management river regulations (including the use of a groover\, fire pan\, etc). \nDirections \nPut-In\nI-70 to Exit 19 at Fruita. South on HWY 340 for 1/2 a mile. Park entrance is on the west side of the highway.\nTake-out\nTravel back into Utah on I-70 for about 5 miles to the Westwater exit. (Exit 227). Travel south off the highway for about 9 miles to the ranger station\, picnic area\, and boat ramp.

SUMMARY:South Platte River: Brighton to Fort Lupton
DESCRIPTION: The South Platte River from Brighton to Fort Lupton is generally a beginner friendly 9 mile trip that is lined with cottonwoods hosting numerous birds and other wildlife… a nice way to begin the paddling season. There is one mandatory portage at a dam and one boat chute drop early on that may be run or portaged depending on conditions. Meet at Veterans Park in Brighton and be ready to begin the car shuttle no later than 9 am.  Take out is at the Fort Lupton’s ballfields park.  Bring Rain Gear\, canoe floatation\, painters\, spare paddle and of course a PFD. Also bring a set of dry clothes in a water proof bag and a lunch or snack. \nFor a detailed description of the river and parking areas go to: http://boc123.com/Kayak/RiverGuide/South_Platte_Brighton_City.cfm \nTrip Coordinator Mat Bozek is out of town so contact him  at matbozekx@gmail.com after April 8th to register for this trip.

SUMMARY:Postponed to April 6: 15th Almost Annual Joint Spring Paddle -- the South Platte Trip is Back\, but Changed!
DESCRIPTION:The Rocky Mountain Canoe Club\, Poudre Paddlers Club\, Flatwater Frogs\, Rocky Mountain Sea Kayak Club\, and High Country River Rafters will be back on the South Platte to celebrate the 2019 padding season.  Our traditional put-in at Riverside Park in Evans\, Colorado has reopened following restoration of severe damage from the September 2013 floods. But Weld County has closed the road to our Kersey takeout for bridge demolition.\n \nBecause weather on March 30 is expected to be wintery\, join us on Saturday\, April 6 (weather permitting) on a Class I\, family friendly paddle from Brighton to Ft. Lupton. \nRegistration is not required (but will get you an email if we also have to cancel our April 6 “snow date”) and non-members are welcome to join.  This is not an ACA-sanctioned trip.  \nFor more detail on the new plan\, see the 2019 South Platte joint Club Flyer Brighton to Ft Lupton or contact Kathryn Mutz at kathryn.mutz@colorado.edu

SUMMARY:2019 Planning and Permit Party
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 12 from 1:30 – 4:30 pm — if you love canoeing be sure to put this meeting on your calendar. This is the time RMCC members\, family and guests come together to learn about possible canoe trips and classes and help determine the club’s 2019 event calendar. Trip coordinators are recruited and dates selected. (Popular trips often fill up during this party.) Many multi-day trips require permits and the odds of getting a permit increases considerably if a group of people put in for the same dates. So time will be given at the end of the meeting for people wishing to register for the same permitted trip so they can plan and coordinate possible dates. For the list of river and lake trips RMCC has offered in previous years including the ones that require a permit click the following link: List of Permit and non-permit river \nThis is also an excellent meeting for people who are not members of RMCC but wish to know more about the club and its activities. If you can’t attend\, consider sending Lynne Carpenter\, the club’s new Trip Master\, the names of the trips in which you are interested so the trip coordinators can add you to their list of possible participants. \nPlan on bringing an appetizer or snack to share and a beverage of your choice. The party is being held at: \nGreenway Park Clubhouse\n110 Greenway Drive\, Broomfield\, Co  80020\nIt is in Broomfield one block south of 120th Avenue and a short block East of Main St. \nFor those of you wonderful volunteers who are willing to be a trip coordinator or co-coordinator in 2019\, please let Lynne know which trips you wish to lead and possible dates. We are also taking names of people interested in being mentored by a more experienced paddler with the intention of leading RMCC excursions in upcoming years. \nContact Lynne Carpenter by email at lynnecarpenter@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Rio Grande: Big Bend National Park\, Texas
DESCRIPTION:This Trip is currently full and a waiting list has been started. Please contact Trip Coordinator Bill Rivers at billiamrivers@gmail.com if you wish to be added to the waiting list.  \n  \nPlan A (if the water is below 1000 cfs) \nSpend 9 days floating 128 miles of the beautiful Rio Grande River from Lajitas in the west to Heath Canyon Ranch\, just outside the eastern boundary of Big Bend National Park. We will pass through the 3 major canyons of the park\, Santa Elena\, Mariscal\, and Boquillas.  Most people choose just 1 canyon\, but it’s a long way from home so we should make the most of it.  There are class 3 rapids in Santa Elena and Mariscal at high water levels.  If the flow is less than 1000CFS these 3 rapids become a class II to a II+ so we will only paddle these rapids if the flow is less than 1000cfs. \n  \nPlan B (if the water is above 1000 cfs) \nFloat from Solis to Heath Canyon\, a 52 mile stretch that can be done in 3 or 4 days.  Boquillas is in this stretch and is a beautiful canyon and only one class 2 rapid near the end of this trip. \nAlso paddle Seminole Canyon State Park \n3 hours\, about 200 miles east from Heath Canyon take out \nFloat the Pecos River down to the confluence of the Rio Grande\, then down the Rio Grande to Panther Cave.  Panther cave is full of pictographs and is only accessible by water. This is a 14 mile round trip\, half will be up river\, but very slow flow. \n  \nTrip Coordinators: Bill Rivers (billiamrivers@gmail.com) and Tracy Hays (sportsmut@aol.com)

SUMMARY:Quetico Provincial Park\, Canada
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis trip is full. Please contact Ken Wenker at wenker@comcast.net if you wish to add your name to the waiting list. \n  \nFor the first time our annual trip to Quetico Provincial Park will be a NO-PORTAGE excursion. Some members have been unable to make our traditional trip\, because they are physically unable to make the portages that are normally involved in a Quetico trip. This also allows RMCC members to use their own canoes without the expense of renting a light weight Kevlar boat. \nWe will put in at French Lake and move\, without portage\, to Pickerel Lake.  Pickerel Lake is HUGE\, with lots of islands and bays that provide dozens of beautiful campsites.  And if the water level is high enough (like Labor Day last year)\, we can even get to additional lakes without portaging.  We plan to spend two nights at most of our campsites\, providing a free day at each one for fishing\, swimming\, exploring\, reading\, gourmet cooking\, or just being lazy.  Plan on late evening campfires\, late coffee in the morning\, and lots of small-talk—in other words\, we are planning this to be a laid-back\, gentle experience. \nPut-in on August 29\, 2018; take out on September 5\, 2018.  It takes two full days each way to drive.   Arrive the afternoon of August 28\, to complete registration and get your mandatory Quetico backcountry briefing; you can camp the night before put-in at Dawson Creek Campgrounds or use a motel at Atikokan\, Ontario. \nCosts\, in addition to travel expenses and your camp food and fuel\, is a $14/day/person expense for the Quetico backcountry camping fee.  (That price tends to increase a bit every so often.) \nWinds can be high sometimes\, making solo paddling potentially problematic on a huge lake like Pickerel.  So we will accept only tandem paddlers.  There is a group size limitation set (and enforced) by the Quetico rangers\, so our group will have no more than 4 boats with 8 paddlers. \nIf you are interested\, please send an email with your name and the name of your paddling partner to wenker@comcast.net.  You should do this before the end of March\, as there is a maximum number of groups that are allowed in for any particular day\, and so we will be making our reservations early—the first few days of April.

SUMMARY:Green river From Mineral bottom to Spanish bottom
DESCRIPTION:  \nDue to a projected low water year this trip has been changed from August to July 22-26\, 2018.  \nThis extraordinarily spectacular Stillwater canyon stretch is about 50 miles of class 1 water going through Canyonlands National park. We should have some time for light side hikes. There are no roads to the takeout so jetboat return is required. The cost with the jetboat return and National park permits will be somewhere between $225 and $250 per person.\nThis will be an ACA trip requiring ACA membership or $5 for insurance. Jet boat reservations should be made soon. Contact: Janet Mallory janetrpm@gmail.com 720-236-6308

SUMMARY:Rio Chama NM
DESCRIPTION:RMCC members drew a winning number in the Chama lottery this year\, and so we have a launch permit for July 13 for up to 16 paddlers. 5 slots are still open. Here’s a link to the BLM site:https://www.blm.gov/programs/recreation/permits-and-passes/lotteries-and-permit-systems/new-mexico/rio-chama-river \n  \nThis is a beautiful and challenging two night run with big rapids. \nWe’ll assemble at 8am on Friday the 13th to check in (and pay the $5/person BLM fee)\, rig and start the shuttle. We should be on the river by late morning. Just Class I-II on Friday\, then a number of Class III drops on Saturday and Sunday. We should finish early afternoon on Sunday. \n  \nThe drive from Denver to the put-in 342 miles (about 6 hours). The drive from the put-in to the take-out is about 56 miles (1.5 hours) each way. You can camp Friday night at the commercial campground below the dam (at the put-in) or up on the reservoir in the state park. \n  \nThe flow of the Rio Chama (a tributary of the Rio Grande) is controlled by the El Vado dam and they target at least 500 cfs during spring and summer weekends. BLM suggests a minimum of 300 cfs for canoes and kayaks. Flow on the weekend of June 15th was 750 cfs (and the historical average is 700 cfs). However\, of course the southwest is in extreme drought and there’s no guarantee we’ll get a target release on our weekend. The best we can do is to check it on the two preceeding weekends and call the BLM/and or El Vado dam on the week of our departure (which I’ll do). \n  \nContact Bill Ashworth (washwort@gmail.com) for more information or to sign-up. Canoes and kayaks welcome\, but strong Class III skills required
