SUMMARY:Lewis Lake to Shoshone Lake\, Yellowstone National Park
DESCRIPTION:Yellowstone National Park is a national treasure\, but few people get off the beaten path to experience its magnificent back country. This camping trip starts at Lewis Lake\, paddles up the channel (towing the boats for the last mile) into Shoshone Lake where you will make camp and explore the Shoshone Geyser Basin. Several options before and after the trip are available including viewing the solar eclipse on the way to Yellowstone\, and paddling the Snake River or lakes in the Teton Nation Park after the trip. \n The following is a tentative itinerary that depends on getting backcountry camp permits on April 1: 2017 Lewis Lake to Shoshone Lake \n Because of the campsite permit the maximum number of people for this trip is 8. Contact Trip Coordinator Kathryn Mutz at Kathryn.mutz@colorado.edu; 303-499-1092 to register.

SUMMARY:Missouri National Recreational River
DESCRIPTION:Paddle two sections of Class 1 water on the Missouri River with a day off in between\, in Northeast Nebraska\, Sunday August 13 through Friday\, August 18. You may be able to just do one of the two sections depending on interest \n Difficulty – Moderate to potentially difficult if there is a lot of headwind.  This is not a float trip – you must be anstrong paddler\, able to paddle 6 to 8 hours a day if necessary\, with early starts to mitigate wind issues. \n Hazards – braided river channels\, sand and gravel bars\, underwater obstructions\, log jams and sweepers and perhaps some motor boats or barges. \n Both sections begin below dams and flow is dam regulated.  Current varies between 2 and 7 mph depending on water levels.  Assume an average of 3 mph\, plus 3 mph paddling speed = 6 6 mph.  That means 4 to 6 hours of steady paddling will get us 24 to 36 miles of travel without headwinds.   \n “39 Mile Section”  Day 1   28 miles \n                            Day 2   11 miles  we may have to switch that if we get too late a start on day 1 \nDay off/Rest Day     we will do the shuttle for the next section this day \n “59 Mile Section”   Day 1   23.2 miles \n                             Day 2   24.1 miles \n                             Day 3    10 miles \n Either section may take an extra day if we get too much headwind!  Final take out and camp is at Ponca State Park in NE.   \n The relatively limited camping options are what account for the longer mileages – camping may not be very esthetic some of the nights.   \n https://www.nps.gov/mnrr/index.htm \nhttps://www.nps.gov/mnrr/39guide.htm \nhttps://www.nps.gov/mnrr/59guide.htm \n  \nTo register for this trip\, contact Trip Coordinator\, Mat Bozek   matbozekx@gmail.com   after April 10. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Yampa River through Dinosaur National Monument
DESCRIPTION:This Yampa River trip\, July 13-17\, will be at low-water with an average flow on the 13th is right about 1\,000 cfs and on the 20th is right about 700.  Rafts are not recommended by the NPS below 1000 cfs (although I hear people run rafts down to about 700). I am considering my Outrage canoe\, but could run my little cataraft or even a ducky.  Canoes have run it down to below 400 (from what I have read). \nI have run this three times – 18\,000 cfs\, 7\,000 cfs\, and 3\,500 cfs  The lower the water\, the easier (much much easier) the trip.  The largest rapid (Warm Springs\, IV) can be portaged if necessary.  The rest of the Yampa should be busy rock dodging with a difficulty rating between II+ and III.  Once we hit the Green it should be wave trains.  Historical flows on the Green in mid July are about 5\,500.  I remember Moonshine Rapid (the first rapid) being the most difficult through Split Mountain\, after that\, big wave trains. \nI don’t know off hand what the limits to group size are\, but I would also like to keep this trip below 20.  Please let me know if you would have room for passengers\, there are some people who would like to go who do not have the boat or experience to run this river. \nLet me know 1) if you are interested\, 2) how many\, 3) what kind of boat(s) you would have.  I won’t start serious planning until April – I am traveling for the next four weeks straight (ugh).  So let me know before the end of March\, please.  My email is Lynnecarpenter@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Wyoming 5 Rivers Trip-cancelled high water
DESCRIPTION:(THIS TRIP IS CANCELED DUE TO HIGH WATER LEVELS) \nMy wife and I discovered these rivers about 8 years ago with a CA canoeing club and have been coming back to paddle these beautiful\, empty rivers almost every year since. The rivers will include the Greys\, Hoback\, Gros Ventre\, scenic Snake\, and one TBD.  This will be a car-camping trip in the Jackson Hole region and thus unloaded boats.  We’ll be on the water around 4 hours each day in Class I-II rapids.  Here’s a link to a RMCC 2015 Wyoming summary and I’ll publish a full itinerary in May with details about the rivers\, campgrounds\, and the schedule. All participants must be comfortable paddling twisty mountain rivers with challenging Class II rapids in the type of boat they’ll be bringing or sharing.  Examples of comparable water in CO are the Filter Plant run on the Poudre and Yarmony Bridge to State Bridge on the Colorado. \n

SUMMARY:White River - Rangely to Enron Gas Wells
DESCRIPTION:(THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED) \nThis is a three day\, two night trip over the Memorial Weekend.  Plan on two nights camping on the river –  but with a strong  group\, we may opt to do the trip in two days/one night depending on flow – that  would allow a full day for the long drive back – it is 285 miles from Denver to Rangely and another 30 or more miles to and from the takeout.  Shuttle takes a good 2 to 3 hours round trip.  Put in at Trujillo Wash and take out at Enron Gas Wells. \nRiver Rating is Class I/II. There is one Class II rapid in Cowboy Canyon that can “generally” be avoided.  Intermediate paddling skill is required – this is NOT a beginner level trip. You must be able to maneuver your canoe around many strainers and through tight corners with very strong eddy lines\, and be able to eddy out quickly.     \nBLM’s Floating the White River brochure describes this portion of the River “for 100 miles between Rangely\, Colorado\, and the river’s confluence with the Green River\, the White River cuts a rugged\, scenic trough into the high desert plains of the Uintah Basin. This is a place to paddle\, watch wildlife\, and occasionally leave the river for an unforgettable hike.” To download this brochure for further details and a map of the river go to: http://www.blm.gov/style/medialib/blm/ut/vernal_fo/recreation.Par.93682.File.dat/white%20river%20for%20web.pdf \nTo sign up for this trip email Mat Bozek (matbozekx@gmail.com) or leave a voice mail at (303) 460-0248 after April 9th. \n

SUMMARY:Yampa: South Beach to Duffy Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Canoe this delightful easy (Class 1+) portion of the Yampa near Craig\, Colorado. We usually see many birds\, and the scenery will migrate from lush cottonwood terrain to quaint ranchland\, and then to remote butte-canyon scenery.  The earlier than usual dates will mean the water is a little cooler\, but also we should enjoy being there before the mosquitoes take over. \n To register contact Dan Custer at custer.dan@gmail.com. For on-river guidance email Karen Amundson at  canoekarena@msn.com \nAvailable camping on May 4. There is limited camping available at the South Beach river access\, which has a pit toilet and requires a permit.  There is also camping at the Yampa River State Park near Hayden\, CO. That campground is fully developed with many more sites for both tents and RV's and is about 20 miles from the South Beach launch site.   \nNo permits are required to float this section of the Yampa\, but Colorado State Park permits are required for vehicles at both the South Beach and Duffy Mountain river access points.  An annual Colorado State Park pass will work\, otherwise daily park passes can be obtained at the Yampa River State Park near Hayden\, CO. \nWe will meet at the South Beach river access point.  Plan to be ready for a shuttle to begin at 9:00AM (gear unloaded and waiver forms signed). The take-out will be at the Duffy Mountain river access\, about 32 miles downstream from the put-in. \n\n \nfor more information click: YampaRiverAreaBrochure – State Park \n

SUMMARY:ACA Introduction to Canoeing: Instructor Development and Certification Workshop (IDW/ICE)
DESCRIPTION:  \n This is an instructor development workshop and an instructor certification exam (IDW/ICE) for Level 1\, Introduction to Canoeing. The Introduction to Canoeing course is designed as a short program emphasizing the entry-level paddling skills for individuals desiring an introduction to the sport of \n\ncanoeing. Participation in the class is no guarantee that you will earn that level of certification\, especially if this is your first exposure to formal paddling instruction.   No worries!  There are means for upgrading within a year \nThe American Canoe Association (ACA) has one of the best established paddlesport instruction programs anywhere in the world.   The courses are comprehensive\, but allow enough flexibility for individual teaching and paddling styles.  The main benefit to taking the course is improving your understanding of paddling technique and theory\, so you can paddle more efficiently and teach more effectively.  A secondary benefit is the development process which can give you structured feedback on becoming an effective instructor.  A third benefit are the significant insurance\, liability\, and networking benefits of ACA certification.  Instructor development workshops are very rewarding and enjoyable\, because of the opportunity for idea exchange. \nApril 8 \n8:00 AM – 5:00 PM – On the water/ lakeside class room activities \n6:00 PM – 8:30 PM – Evening classroom session \nApril 9 \n8:00 – 5:00 on the water/ lakeside class room activities \nCost: $200 per person \nRegistration will be first come\, first serve with a maximum of 12 students. Registration is on-line at: https://www.regonline.com/canoeidw2017. \nJeff Oxenford – Jeff is an ACA Level 4 Whitewater Open Canoe Instructor Trainer. He has been paddling and teaching canoeing for over 30 years. If you have questions\, don’t hesitate to contact Jeff Oxenford at (720) 353-4242 or joxenford@comcast.net \nFor detailed information on this class: Instructors Training 2017

SUMMARY:Planning & Permit Party
DESCRIPTION:Members & nonmembers come together to learn about possible 2017 paddle trips for people of all skill levels. If enough people say they want a trip to happen\, the club will try to recruit a leader which is often done the night of the party. Some very popular trips fill during this event—another reason to attend! This is also the night when small groups discuss submitting requests for permits down very popular rivers such as the Smith River (a famous Montana trout stream)\, Gates of Ladore through Dinosaur National Monument\, Salmon River (Idaho)\, the Rio Chama (New Mexico)\, or the San Juan River (Utah). This year’s Planning & Permit Party will be held Sunday evening\, January 15 at 6:00 in Boulder. Please contact Kit Williams at kitrynwilliams@gmail.com if you plan to attend or have any questions about this potluck event.
