SUMMARY:2019 Planning and Permit Party
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 12 from 1:30 – 4:30 pm — if you love canoeing be sure to put this meeting on your calendar. This is the time RMCC members\, family and guests come together to learn about possible canoe trips and classes and help determine the club’s 2019 event calendar. Trip coordinators are recruited and dates selected. (Popular trips often fill up during this party.) Many multi-day trips require permits and the odds of getting a permit increases considerably if a group of people put in for the same dates. So time will be given at the end of the meeting for people wishing to register for the same permitted trip so they can plan and coordinate possible dates. For the list of river and lake trips RMCC has offered in previous years including the ones that require a permit click the following link: List of Permit and non-permit river \nThis is also an excellent meeting for people who are not members of RMCC but wish to know more about the club and its activities. If you can’t attend\, consider sending Lynne Carpenter\, the club’s new Trip Master\, the names of the trips in which you are interested so the trip coordinators can add you to their list of possible participants. \nPlan on bringing an appetizer or snack to share and a beverage of your choice. The party is being held at: \nGreenway Park Clubhouse\n110 Greenway Drive\, Broomfield\, Co  80020\nIt is in Broomfield one block south of 120th Avenue and a short block East of Main St. \nFor those of you wonderful volunteers who are willing to be a trip coordinator or co-coordinator in 2019\, please let Lynne know which trips you wish to lead and possible dates. We are also taking names of people interested in being mentored by a more experienced paddler with the intention of leading RMCC excursions in upcoming years. \nContact Lynne Carpenter by email at lynnecarpenter@gmail.com

SUMMARY:RMCC Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, Nov 17 from 6:00-9:30 pm is our annual meeting— a time to elect officers\, discuss next year’s club activities\, and reminisce about past canoe adventures. It is a pot luck so fantastic food is assured! We invite you to give a 5 minute presentation of your best photos from 2018 canoe activities. Please try to keep the presentation to no more than 5 minutes by showing only 10-20 photos per trip. Be sure to bring your pictures to the meeting on a thumbdrive in a JPEG format (if you can post your pictures online and friends can open them through email or text messaging\, they are probably already in JPEG). The meeting will be held at the Greenway Park Golf Course Clubhouse\, 110 Greenway Drive\, Broomfield 80020.

SUMMARY:Rio Grande: Big Bend National Park\, Texas
DESCRIPTION:This Trip is currently full and a waiting list has been started. Please contact Trip Coordinator Bill Rivers at billiamrivers@gmail.com if you wish to be added to the waiting list.  \n  \nPlan A (if the water is below 1000 cfs) \nSpend 9 days floating 128 miles of the beautiful Rio Grande River from Lajitas in the west to Heath Canyon Ranch\, just outside the eastern boundary of Big Bend National Park. We will pass through the 3 major canyons of the park\, Santa Elena\, Mariscal\, and Boquillas.  Most people choose just 1 canyon\, but it’s a long way from home so we should make the most of it.  There are class 3 rapids in Santa Elena and Mariscal at high water levels.  If the flow is less than 1000CFS these 3 rapids become a class II to a II+ so we will only paddle these rapids if the flow is less than 1000cfs. \n  \nPlan B (if the water is above 1000 cfs) \nFloat from Solis to Heath Canyon\, a 52 mile stretch that can be done in 3 or 4 days.  Boquillas is in this stretch and is a beautiful canyon and only one class 2 rapid near the end of this trip. \nAlso paddle Seminole Canyon State Park \n3 hours\, about 200 miles east from Heath Canyon take out \nFloat the Pecos River down to the confluence of the Rio Grande\, then down the Rio Grande to Panther Cave.  Panther cave is full of pictographs and is only accessible by water. This is a 14 mile round trip\, half will be up river\, but very slow flow. \n  \nTrip Coordinators: Bill Rivers (billiamrivers@gmail.com) and Tracy Hays (sportsmut@aol.com)

SUMMARY:Lake Powell
DESCRIPTION:Trip is full\, but a short Wait List will be kept. Contact Trip Coordinator: Karen Amundson\, canoekarena@msn.com if you wish to be added to the waiting list. \n  \nThe week of September 16-22\, 2018\, RMCC will rent a 53′ houseboat out of the Bullfrog Marina at Lake Powell.  The maximum of 12 people will pair up so that 2 people will each provide 1 day’s appetizers and dinner for the group and also bring individual breakfasts and lunches.  Everyone will have a sea kayak or decked canoe along to do day trips out of our camps.  Ideally we will spend 2 nights in each of 3 camps or 3 nights in 2 camps\, and we plan to go upriver (to the NE) to explore several canyons and Indian sites.

SUMMARY:Quetico Provincial Park\, Canada
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis trip is full. Please contact Ken Wenker at wenker@comcast.net if you wish to add your name to the waiting list. \n  \nFor the first time our annual trip to Quetico Provincial Park will be a NO-PORTAGE excursion. Some members have been unable to make our traditional trip\, because they are physically unable to make the portages that are normally involved in a Quetico trip. This also allows RMCC members to use their own canoes without the expense of renting a light weight Kevlar boat. \nWe will put in at French Lake and move\, without portage\, to Pickerel Lake.  Pickerel Lake is HUGE\, with lots of islands and bays that provide dozens of beautiful campsites.  And if the water level is high enough (like Labor Day last year)\, we can even get to additional lakes without portaging.  We plan to spend two nights at most of our campsites\, providing a free day at each one for fishing\, swimming\, exploring\, reading\, gourmet cooking\, or just being lazy.  Plan on late evening campfires\, late coffee in the morning\, and lots of small-talk—in other words\, we are planning this to be a laid-back\, gentle experience. \nPut-in on August 29\, 2018; take out on September 5\, 2018.  It takes two full days each way to drive.   Arrive the afternoon of August 28\, to complete registration and get your mandatory Quetico backcountry briefing; you can camp the night before put-in at Dawson Creek Campgrounds or use a motel at Atikokan\, Ontario. \nCosts\, in addition to travel expenses and your camp food and fuel\, is a $14/day/person expense for the Quetico backcountry camping fee.  (That price tends to increase a bit every so often.) \nWinds can be high sometimes\, making solo paddling potentially problematic on a huge lake like Pickerel.  So we will accept only tandem paddlers.  There is a group size limitation set (and enforced) by the Quetico rangers\, so our group will have no more than 4 boats with 8 paddlers. \nIf you are interested\, please send an email with your name and the name of your paddling partner to wenker@comcast.net.  You should do this before the end of March\, as there is a maximum number of groups that are allowed in for any particular day\, and so we will be making our reservations early—the first few days of April.

SUMMARY:Rio Chama NM
DESCRIPTION:RMCC members drew a winning number in the Chama lottery this year\, and so we have a launch permit for July 13 for up to 16 paddlers. 5 slots are still open. Here’s a link to the BLM site:https://www.blm.gov/programs/recreation/permits-and-passes/lotteries-and-permit-systems/new-mexico/rio-chama-river \n  \nThis is a beautiful and challenging two night run with big rapids. \nWe’ll assemble at 8am on Friday the 13th to check in (and pay the $5/person BLM fee)\, rig and start the shuttle. We should be on the river by late morning. Just Class I-II on Friday\, then a number of Class III drops on Saturday and Sunday. We should finish early afternoon on Sunday. \n  \nThe drive from Denver to the put-in 342 miles (about 6 hours). The drive from the put-in to the take-out is about 56 miles (1.5 hours) each way. You can camp Friday night at the commercial campground below the dam (at the put-in) or up on the reservoir in the state park. \n  \nThe flow of the Rio Chama (a tributary of the Rio Grande) is controlled by the El Vado dam and they target at least 500 cfs during spring and summer weekends. BLM suggests a minimum of 300 cfs for canoes and kayaks. Flow on the weekend of June 15th was 750 cfs (and the historical average is 700 cfs). However\, of course the southwest is in extreme drought and there’s no guarantee we’ll get a target release on our weekend. The best we can do is to check it on the two preceeding weekends and call the BLM/and or El Vado dam on the week of our departure (which I’ll do). \n  \nContact Bill Ashworth (washwort@gmail.com) for more information or to sign-up. Canoes and kayaks welcome\, but strong Class III skills required

SUMMARY:Gunnison River
DESCRIPTION:This July 2-5 Gunnison River trip is perfect for intermediate canoers. It passes through stunning red rock country in the Bureau of Land Management’s Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area\, with easy campsites along the way. SUMMARY:RMCC Wyoming 5 Rivers
DESCRIPTION:My wife and I discovered these rivers about 10 years ago with a CA canoeing club and have been coming back to paddle these beautiful\, empty rivers almost every year since. The rivers will include the Greys\, Gros Ventre\, Snake above Hoback Junction\, Scenic Snake\, and one TBD.  This will be a car-camping trip in the Jackson Hole region and thus unloaded boats.  We’ll be on the water around 4 hours each day in Class I-II rapids.  Look for a link to a summary and a full itinerary in May with details about the rivers\, campgrounds\, and the schedule. All participants must be comfortable paddling twisty mountain rivers with challenging Class II rapids in the type of boat they’ll be bringing or sharing.  Examples of comparable water in CO are the Filter Plant run on the Poudre and Yarmony Bridge to State Bridge on the Colorado.

SUMMARY:Niobrara River Memorial Day weekend 2018
DESCRIPTION:This will be an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a $5/person insurance fee.  This is an easy\, kids-friendly class 1 river\, with our campground in the middle of the run.  Each day will be about 12 miles and about 4 hours. \nThis beautiful stretch is one of America’s premier scenic heritage waterways; we’ll see many waterfalls\, beautiful hardwood forests\, and birds!  And the resident buffalo herd at the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (https://www.fws.gov/refuge/fort_niobrara/ ) often has calves this time of year.  We run the river on Saturday and Sunday. Most car camp at Smith Falls State Park\, Friday – Sunday nights (May 25-27); return to the Front Range after breakfast on Monday (about a 6-7 hour drive back to Denver) or continue to see the sights of Nebraska or head up to South Dakota. \nNiobrara River Trail description here .  \nDescription from Backpacker magazine:  http://www.backpacker.com/stories/paddle-nebraska-s-niobrara-river \nRiver gage at https://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=06461500.  We ran it at about 1500 cfs in 2017.  (Running 1220 cfs as of May 7\, 2018) \nSaturday\, we’ll meet at 11am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the Cornell Bridge put-in near Valentine\, down to the State Park campground and beach the canoes and then start from then again on Sunday.   If you are not camping\, but meeting us in the morning\, see the note\, below for directions. \nSaturday evening – optional potluck appetizers and dinner at one of the convenient campsites (location to be announced and look for the RMCC banner).  There is a large group shelter generally available in case of rain. \nSunday\, we’ll meet near the boat ramp (where we took out on Saturday) at 10am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the campground to the take-out – probably at Sunny Brook Camp\, about a mile upstream of Rocky Ford.  The shuttle takes over an hour\, so non-drivers should plan to relax\, hike to Smith Falls\, and/or birdwatch at the campground while the drivers are driving. We will verify the 10am shuttle start on Saturday night. \nSunday evening: Informal group happy hour possible\, but no specific group activity planned.  Some of us will be checking out (i.e.\, scouting\, not running) the Norden chute and going to the TNC Niobrara Valley Preserve near there) (https://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/nebraska/placesweprotect/niobrara-valley-preserve.xml );  see a recent TNC blog at: https://prairieecologist.com/2018/05/04/photo-of-the-week-may-4-2018/ \nCamping \nThe campground doesn’t open until just before Memorial Day and there is no official group site.  Tents will go down by the river and RVs and trailers will be put on the slope across the road from the tents.  Several sites are VERY large and could easily accommodate 4 or 5 tents if folks would like a group setting or just couldn’t get a reservation.  Smith Falls State Park (402) 376-1306)\, $5/person/night\, showers included.  Phone reservations taken starting May 7th.  Several of us have camp reservations and are willing to share as we have found out that the campground is filling up for the weekend. \nNote: Directions to Cornell Bridge from Valentine:  Take Nebraska 12 east about 4 miles to the Ft Niobrara Wildlife refuge turn-off. Turn right towards the river and then make the first right into the access parking lot. Be there by 11 am ready to shuttle and be sure to purchase your $1 wrist-band at the kiosk. \nIMPORTANT: Valentine is on CENTRAL TIME. \nSign up with Kathryn Mutz    303-499-1092    kathryn.mutz@colorado.edu \nNOTE:  I will be out of town and have limited access to email and phone messages from May 9 – 22. \nPlease leave a message and be patient.

SUMMARY:White River\, near Meeker
DESCRIPTION:  \nTHIS TRIP HAS BEEN CANCELED and a new trip on the Gunnison River from May 12-13 has been scheduled in its place. \n  \nThis is a three day\, two night trip.  Plan on two nights camping on the river –  but with a strong  group\, we may opt to do the trip in two days/one night depending on flow – that  would allow a full day for the long drive back – it is 285 miles from Denver to Rangely and another 30 or more miles to and from the takeout.  Shuttle takes a good 2 to 3 hours round trip.  Put in at Trujillo Wash and take out at Enron Gas Wells. \nRiver Rating is Class I/II. There is one Class II rapid in Cowboy Canyon that can “generally” be avoided.  Intermediate paddling skill is required – this is NOT a beginner level trip. You must be able to maneuver your canoe around many strainers and through tight corners with very strong eddy lines\, and be able to eddy out quickly.     \nBLM’s Floating the White River brochure describes this portion of the River “for 100 miles between Rangely\, Colorado\, and the river’s confluence with the Green River\, the White River cuts a rugged\, scenic trough into the high desert plains of the Uintah Basin. This is a place to paddle\, watch wildlife\, and occasionally leave the river for an unforgettable hike.”  \nContact Mat Bozek \nTrip Coordinator: Mat Bozek\, matbozekx@gmail.com to register for this trip.  \n

SUMMARY:Yampa River: South Beach to Duffy Mountain
DESCRIPTION:This trip is full and a waiting list has been started. Trip date is MAY 4-6\, 2018 with a back up date of May 18-20 if the weather or water level does not cooperate. Contact Trip coordinator: Dan Custer\, custer.dan@gmail.com if you wish to be added to the waiting list \n  \nCanoe this delightful easy (Class 1+) portion of the Yampa near Craig\, Colorado. We usually see many birds\, and the scenery will migrate from  cottonwood terrain to quaint ranchland\, and then to remote butte-canyon scenery.  The earlier than usual dates will mean the water is a little cooler\, but also we should enjoy being there before the mosquitoes take over. \nAvailable camping on May 3.  For a fee\, there is camping at the Yampa River State Park near Hayden\, CO. That campground is fully developed with  sites for both tents and RV’s and is about 20 miles from the South Beach launch site\, and in early May will have plenty of available sites. Also\, Craig has a motel or two. \nNo permits are required to float this section of the Yampa\, but Colorado State Park permits are required for vehicles at both the South Beach and Duffy Mountain river access points.  An annual Colorado State Park pass will work\, otherwise daily park passes can be obtained at the Yampa River State Park near Hayden\, CO.

SUMMARY:2018 Almost Annual Spring Kickoff Paddling Trip
DESCRIPTION:  \n2018 — 14th Almost Annual Spring Kickoff Paddling Trip: Lonetree State Wildlife Area\nSunday March 25th\, ready to launch at 10:00 am\nParticipating organizations: Rocky Mountain Canoe Club ¤ Flatwater Frogs ¤ Rocky Mountain Sea Kayak Club ¤ Poudre Paddlers \nJoin us for a casual lake paddle to get the season started.  This trip is suitable for novices and families.   \nOur traditional season opener on the South Platte River from Evans to Kersey/Kuner is not yet accessible.  Although we hear that our traditional put-in at Riverside Park in Evans\, Colorado should be available for us next year.  But Colorado waters are calling.  Join us for a morning paddle at the Lonetree State Wildlife Area.  Facilities at the reservoir include a boat ramp\, restrooms\, shade shelters\, and hiking trails. \n\nBring your friends!  Bring a snack or beverage to share after the paddle\nPre-registration is not necessary. Membership is not required\, though we encourage you to take this opportunity to join our organizations.\nMeet at the boat ramp on the west side of the reservoir (near the south end) – ready to launch at 10:00 a.m. \n\nFrom Berthoud\, go north on HWY 287 approximately 2 1/2 miles to Campion\, turn west (left) on County Road 14 to County Road 21 (Lonetree Drive) and then one mile south (left) to the entrance. \n\nThis trip could possibly be cancelled due to really bad weather. Please check with your club coordinator (list below) the day before for the trip status. We have not scheduled a snow/rain date.\nWe will have a short launch meeting for everyone at 10:00 am at the boat ramp. Please unload boats and equipment promptly\, and hand in waivers to your club coordinator (see below).\nBring: Suitable canoe\, kayak or inflatable. Also ESPECIALLY recommended is warm clothing\, spare change of clothing\, lunch\, water\, leak proof rubber boots and/or change of shoes\, sunglasses\, sun screen\, sun hat\, dry bag.  Make sure children are well dressed for COLD water and air.  Bring extra clothes and shoes for children!\n\nSafety Notices \n\nWAIVERS & PFD’s REQUIRED. There are normal boating risks involved; thus signed waivers for club members and PFD’s (life vests) are required. Please Note:  This is NOT an ACA sanctioned event.\n\nHelp us out by printing your waiver off your club website and bringing it to the meeting place. \n\nHypothermia. The water can be quite cold on a spring trip like this. One of the best defenses against hypothermia in case of a tip-over is to travel with one or more companion boats\, so that you can quickly get assistance to dry land and a change of clothes.\n\nOrganizations\, Contacts and Links\nCome on out and meet your fellow paddlers and club representatives. \nFor waiver print-outs and more club info: \nRocky Mountain Canoe Club – Kathryn Mutz\, kathryn.mutz@colorado.eduhttp://localhost:8180  \nRocky Mountain Sea Kayak Club – Jud Hurd\, hurdofgoats@gmail.com\, www.rmskc.org \nFlatwater Frogs – Holly Burger\,  artafire@msn.com\, https://www.facebook.com/groups/727839657360758/ \nPoudre Paddlers Canoe and Kayak Club – Debbie Hinde\, dhinde1@msn.com\, http://poudrepaddlers.weebly.com/ \nFor more information on Lonetree State Wildlife Area\, see http://cpw.state.co.us/learn/Maps/LoneTreeSWA.pdf \nOr call the Fort Collins office of Colorado Parks and Wildlife at 970-472-4300 \n2018 Joint Club Flatwater Paddle Flyer
