SUMMARY:Upper Missouri National Wild & Scenic River\, Montana.   May 12th- May 19th\, 2022.  (8 Days\, 150 river miles) Class 1\,  ACA trip
DESCRIPTION:It is 777 miles from\, Denver to the put in at Fort Benton \nWe will be camping 7 nights on the river. This is the famous “White Cliffs” / “Missouri Breaks”  Section of the Missouri RIver.  \nNo little kids\, no dogs\, NO WHINING allowed. \nMandatory equipment will include an alarm clock for each tent. Yes\, an alarm clock! for the mandatory 8 AM start each day. This section is known for high upriver winds\, and we will be on the water each day by 8 AM so as to get to camp by early afternoon to avoid the worst of the winds. Aside from high winds\, other hazards include rattlesnakes\, ice cold water\, falling cottonwood branches\, soft crumbly rock (on hikes) and all the usual other hazards of river travel\, as well as some (not so minor) potential for spring blizzards. \nWe will be camping in a mix of “primitive” and “developed” boat camps (and potentially just bushwhack camping if necessary). River toilets are mandatory\, except that WAG Bags are an acceptable alternative if you put them into a waterproof container.  Everyone will be responsible for their own Poo – No S***!. I’m not hauling yours. The river water is not fit for drinking\, even if filtering\, as it contains agricultural runoff of fertilizers and pesticides (and it’s not known as The Big Muddy for nothing). Everyone is required to carry enough drinking water for the full trip. I expect to carry 7 gallons myself – ½ gal for first and last days and a full gallon for each day between. Recommended is a gallon per person per day. At 8 lbs/gallon\, that 56 pounds to start with (per person\, at least).  \n I hope to get to camp early enough to allow time for some hiking in the afternoons. I am planning on 6 camps and 6 travel days\, with one day in reserve to use as a layover\, or makeup day if needed. May is the highest flow rate\, so I anticipate a fair current – expect to paddle at least one or two 30 mile days\, which means you need to be in good enough physical condition to paddle (not float) for 6 to 8 hours each day. If the current is flowing at 2mph and we paddle at 3 mph\, that’s 5mph and 6 hours of actual paddling time to cover 30 miles. Could be more or less depending on conditions. \nThe shuttle service in Ft. Benton has a 10 passenger van . We may opt to do our own shuttle if we arrive at Ft Benton soon enough We may need to use two shuttle services\, or maybe pre-shuttle some of our vehicles. Depending\, shuttle service will cost a minimum of $40 per driver – could be double that or more) The shuttle is 150 miles one-way\, which is why I prefer to use a shuttle service. \nFEES: aside from the shuttle fees\, you should bring enough cash to pay for camping at the pay campgrounds if we are forced to use them (varies from $5 to $12 per site) \nBLM River Trip Fees = $4 per person per day = $28 per person – we will pay at the Coal Banks Landing ranger station.. \n\n\n\n\nWhile this can be characterized as a beginner level trip\, a beginner would have to have moving water experience and be physically and mentally able to paddle the 6 to 8 hours per day\, day after day. The river is Class 1 – there are about 15 named rapids which are mainly at islands\, and would seem to be just large wave trains. In higher water\, most all of those rapids get washed out. DESCRIPTION:The South Beach to Duffy Mountain stretch of the Yampa is an easy flatwater/Class I trip.  In early May we have had good flow and not many mosquitoes\, and not much (if any) competition for campsites. \nThis is a good trip to break out your gear from storage and get ready for the canoe season.  It is also an easy trip for people new to canoeing and canoe camping.  Pack a warm sleeping bag because the mornings will be frosty. As usual\, be ready for all weather conditions from pouring rain\, to snow\, and to sunshine.  Also\, you can expect strong afternoon headwinds. \nThe first day’s float will be through private ranch land where the eagle nests will be seen.  Many bald eagle nests are on this stretch and  some may have visible babies in them.  The second day we will be paddling through BLM land\, which is more scenic but without the eagle nests and without the railroad.  Flocks of sheep with big scary sheep dogs may be seen\, but we will not be camping with them. \nTo register for this event\, email Trip Coordinator Dan Custer at custer.dan@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Gunnison River - 3 days - May 22\, 23\, 24  Delta to Whitewater - 42 miles Class II.  ACA trip
DESCRIPTION:You need to provide your own river toilet. Temps should be fairly mild – expect highs in the 50s and lows about 30. Plan for two nights camping. And plan on a very early Sunday\, to get down river hopefully before the winds kick up. \nThere are 2 Class II rapids. I don’t recall how low I have ever run the Gunny\, but I recall one summer trip that we had to walk the boats thru the rock garden instead of doing the normal run for the first CII – we will scout the first rapid. The second CII can be avoided – it is at Dominguez canyon – a left channel (with a killer undercut rock) will avoid the CII\, which is right of the island. There is also a rock dam to negotiate about 6 miles down river – it is not a problem\, but must be run at far left. This run is easier in higher water than low. \nI am still working on the shuttle arrangements – hopefully we will be able to park vehicles at the Lazy S motel in Whitewater. . – still a work in process right now. \nThis is an ACA trip – if you are an ACA member\, e-mail me your membership number – if you have an Online Waiver\, you can send me a copy of that. Except for people with a valid online waiver\, you will need to fill out an ACA waiver for the trip (BRING YOUR # with you – you need it for the waiver form). If you are not an ACA member\, then you need to pay the $10 per person insurance fee. Since this is an ACA trip\, and since it is Class II – you must have a helmet for the CII rapids (NO Bike Helmets).  \nNo dogs or little kids – guests may be allowed\, if its cleared with me first. Day 1 is 28 miles\, so no slow boats  \nSign up with trip coordinator\, Mat Bozek\, matbozekx@gmail.com to register for this trip or ask questions.         No sign ups before March 1st! \nCAUTION – If I can obtain a permit for Loma to Westwater for May 24th\, this trip will not end at Whitewater – This will add 13 more miles and one more night to the trip so it would be 3 nights/4days and there will be one mandatory portage around the Redlands Dam – 3/10 mile portage\, and there is one more CII rock garden rapid upstream from the dam – this addition is dependent on having sufficient water and on obtaining the permit for camping in Ruby/Horsethief – dates also depend on obtaining permits for Gunnison if they are implemented.

SUMMARY:RMCC Niobrara River Memorial Day 2022 near Valentine\, NE
DESCRIPTION:This will be an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a $10/person insurance fee.  This is an easy\, kids-friendly class 1 river\, with our campground in the middle of the run.  Each day will be about 12 miles and about 4 hours. For more information about skill level and equipment information\, see RMCC Boating Requirements and Recommendations. \nThis beautiful stretch is one of America’s premier scenic heritage waterways; we’ll see many waterfalls\, beautiful hardwood forests\, and birds!  And the resident buffalo herd at the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (https://www.fws.gov/refuge/fort_niobrara/ ) often has calves this time of year.  We run the river on Saturday and Sunday. Most will car camp at Smith Falls State Park\, Friday – Sunday nights; return to the Front Range after breakfast on Monday (about a 6-7 hour drive back to Denver) or continue to see the sights of Nebraska or head up to South Dakota. \nMemorial Day is shoulder season in the Sand Hills of Nebraska and we often have rain on parts of one or more days.  \nNiobrara River Trail description here .  \nDescription from Backpacker magazine:  http://www.backpacker.com/stories/paddle-nebraska-s-niobrara-river \nRiver gage at https://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=06461500.  We generally run it at between 1000 and 2000 cfs. \nSaturday\, we’ll meet at 10am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the Cornell Bridge put-in near Valentine\, down to the Smith Falls State Park campground and beach the canoes\, and then start from there again on Sunday.   If you are not camping\, but meeting us in the morning\, see the note\, below for directions. \nSaturday evening – optional potluck dinner at one of the convenient campsites.  There is a large group shelter generally available in case of rain. \nSunday\, we’ll meet near the boat ramp (where we took out on Saturday) at 10am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the campground to the take-out – probably at Sunny Brook Camp\, about a mile upstream of Rocky Ford.  The shuttle takes over an hour\, so non-drivers should plan to relax\, hike to Smith Falls\, and/or birdwatch at the campground while the drivers are driving. We will verify the 10am shuttle start on Saturday night. \nSunday evening: Informal group happy hour possible\, but no specific group activity planned.  Some of us will be checking out (i.e.\, scouting\, not running) the Norden chute and going to the The Nature Conservancy Niobrara Valley Preserve near there) (https://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/nebraska/placesweprotect/niobrara-valley-preserve.xml  \nCamping \nThe campground at Smith Falls State Park doesn’t open until Maqy 1 and there is no official group site.   We used to have the campground to ourselves but in recent years\, its gotten more crowded. The campground was reconfigured for 2021\, adding more sites and mixing the use between tents and RVs in all sites. You can make reservations now – here’s the link to the on-line camping reservations  https://nebraskastateparks.reserveamerica.com \nYou can also call the park for reservations ( (402) 376-1306) but your best bet is on-line. The camping cost is $15/day/site plus a day use fee. \nNote: Directions to Cornell Bridge from Valentine:  Take Nebraska 12 east about 4 miles to the Ft Niobrara Wildlife refuge turn-off. Turn right towards the river and then make the first right into the access parking lot. DESCRIPTION:This will be an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a\n$10/person insurance fee. This is a combination of class II day trips and the Bluegrass on the\nRiver festival\, with our campground 3 miles from the music event. \nSee:\nhttps://bluegrassonthearkansas.org/schedule/ for the late Saturday and Sunday music. \nThe river sections that we do will be dependent on water levels\, but we are aiming for a few\nthat are class II or easier. Saturday is likely to be Cotopaxi to Texas Creek (10 miles) with a mid-\nmorning launch that allows Front Range folk to drive down early that morning. Sunday music\nstarts earlier\, so some people will head to a hot spring and others may do the Milk Run below\nBuena Vista or the section just above Salida. On Monday and if we get flows in the 600-1200cfs\nrange\, then we will go from Florence to Pueblo Reservoir where we usually see lots of birds and\nmay have a few strainers. \n***Note that this will be cold water\, so wet suits are highly recommended. Also floatation\, spare\npaddle\, bailing devices\, painters and a throw rope are required. River gauge for Parkdale is at\nhttps://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?07094500 \nCamping will be on Karen's property. There is a Port-o-let but no running water. Due to the\nlimited number of flat spots\, we are keeping the camping numbers to about 8 people in 4 or 5\ntents.
