Emphasis is placed both on personal safety and on simple\, commonly used skills. Fundamental and more advanced techniques for dealing with hazards that carry greater risks for both victim and rescuer\, such as strainers\, rescue vest applications\, entrapments\, and pins\, also are practiced. Scenarios will provide an opportunity for participants to practice their skills both individually and within a team/group context. \nCourse Objectives: \n\n\nPromote proactive prevention of river accidents and injuries. \n\n\nDevelop and practice key self-rescue skills. \n\n\nIdentify and avoid river hazards by understanding hydrology\, hazards\, and river features. \n\n\nFocus on fast\, low-risk strategies for early management of river accidents \n\n\nDevelop and practice methods for recovering swimmers\, and loose boats and equipment \n\n\nDevelop and practice more advanced rope-based and in-water skills \n\n\nGain experience using the rescue PFD\, and understand its strengths and weaknesses \n\n\nUtilize rescue scene management principles needed within a paddling group \n\n\n\n\nPlease review the Essential Eligibility Criteria (EEC) and a basic gear list here. \nClick here to find the Swiftwater Rescue Sample Skills Course document from the American Canoe Association. \nCamping Information: \nFor camping\, there’s a ton in the area. The closest river-side paid developed campground is Hecla Junction\, but it does fill up super early. Then there’s a lot of free dispersed camping all within 2 to 20 minutes away. We also have a field that we are happy to let folks camp in. It’s flat and convenient\, but it’s not developed and there is highway noise. For no highway noise\, here’s a map to the closest place that’s just 2 minutes away. See the dirt road that goes off a bit to the southeast? That’s whole area is camping. It’s free\, so you never know how many RVs are posted up there\, but it usually works out. There’s more in the valley too if you are interested. \nFor further questions\, please contact Debbie Hinde at dhinde1@msn.com

SUMMARY:McIntosh Lake After-Work Social Paddle (NW Longmont) Wed.\, July 19\, 5:30 pm -8 pm
DESCRIPTION:Plan to launch at 6 pm. \nMacintosh Lake\, in NW Longmont\,  makes a great casual evening paddle. Views of Longs Peak as the sun sets are great. Stroke practice and paddle exercise is possible or simply enjoy a casual conversational paddle. All boat types welcome. \nWe will paddle around the lake once or twice\, depending on the desires of the group\, and be off the water before dark. Launch along the south side of the lake from Lakeshore Dive\, Longmont\, CO 80503. (near the intersection of Lakeshore Drive and Harbor Lane)  \nThe lake is a popular evening spot\, so be sure to arrive in enough time to unload your boat and re-park your car (there is a 15 minute loading area and then parking along the road a bit further away.) Wheels are desirable if you have them\, but not essential– there is usually someone to help carry your boat from the loading area or share their wheels! \nThis is an ACA paddle\, so membership\, or a one time $10 event fee is required. \nWith unpredictable afternoon weather\, coordinator will confirm–or cancel–by 4 pm the day of the paddle. So\, be sure to RSVP  if you plan to paddle. so that you get these last minute info updates. \nContact Brookie with questions or to sign up. brookiegal@gmail.com
