SUMMARY:Essentials of CANOEING: Flatwater and Moving Water. 2-Day Class\, May 11-12\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:This class is for solo (1-person) and tandem (2-person) canoes. \nThe cost is $45 per person for the entire class (or $25 per person for just the flatwater class on May 11) to be paid before the class* \nStudents can enroll for only the flatwater day if they desire. \n*If you are not a current American Canoe Association (ACA) member\, there is an additional $10 insurance fee; if you are a current ACA member please provide that number to the class instructors. \nLead instructors are Debbie Hinde and Lynne Carpenter. \nPlease register by emailing Debbie Hinde at dhinde1@msn.com.  \nLocation depends on the water level and will be announced a couple of weeks before the class. \nMaximum number of boats is ten for the flatwater day and five per session (see below) on the moving water day. \nWe will start a waitlist if necessary. \nEssentials of Canoeing Part I: Flatwater   \nSaturday\, May 11\, 2024.   9:00 am – 3:00 pm \nWe will cover canoe equipment\, boat outfitting\, strokes\, water safety\, and basic maneuvering. Fun\, dynamic drills and games will help you learn basic skills for moving the canoe as efficiently as possible using the following strokes: forward and backward strokes\, sweeps\, draws\, pries\, and the J stroke.\nThis class will be held in a lake or reservoir in the Denver to Longmont Metropolitan area. Maximum number of boats for this class is ten. \nEssentials of Canoeing Part II: Moving Water  (Prerequisite: Flatwater class or verified experience) \nSunday\, May 12\, 2023: Two sessions: 8:00 am – 12:00 pm  OR  1:00 pm – 5:00 pm \nTake your flatwater skills on to moving water in Part II where you will learn skills for paddling in moving water. SUMMARY:Yampa River\, South Beach to Duffy Mountain\, through Little Yampa Canyon. Class I
DESCRIPTION:The South Beach to Duffy Mountain stretch of the Yampa an easy flatwater/Class I trip.  Early May is a good time to float the Yampa because the bugs should not be a problem\, there should not be competition for campsites\, and usually the water level is excellent. \nThis is an easy trip for people new to canoeing and canoe camping. Pack a warm sleeping bag because the mornings may be frosty.  A headwind is guaranteed and it could be strong.   \nThe first day’s float will be through private ranch land\, and that is where the eagle nests will be seen.  We will see bald eagles and their nests; we may also see baby eagles in the nests.  The second day we will be paddling through BLM land\, which is more scenic but without the eagle nests.  Flocks of sheep with big scary sheep dogs may be seen\, but we do not have to camp with them.  Docile cattle may roam through camp. \nThis stretch has about half a dozen improved campsites.  Improved means a table and a fire ring.  Most likely we will camp on a large island inside BLM land\, without improvements.  This trip could be run in one long day.  It could be run in 3 days\, which would have you paddling a little each day and sitting in camp a lot as there are not hiking trails to explore.  I like this as a two-day trip.  Usually\, we reach the take-out around 2:00 or 3:00 in the afternoon of the second day and can drive much of the way back to Denver in day light. \nProvided that we get approval from the Yampa State Park office\, we can camp at the put-in\, South Beach\, the night before launching.  There is no fee to camp at South Beach\, but everyone will need to either have an annual state parks pass on their vehicle\, or purchase day passes.  State park passes also apply while we are on the river and both the put-in and take-out are managed by Yampa River State Park.  Both South Beach and Duffy Mountain river accesses have pit toilets.  While on the river\, we will have to pack out our waste.  Wag-bags are allowed but we will probably use a groover.  If you prefer not to camp the night before we launch\, there are motel rooms that can be had in Craig\, about 10 or 15 minutes from South Beach.  \nTrip Coordinator: Dan Custer (custer.dan@gmail.com)

SUMMARY:White River\, Rangely CO.  Class II.  65 miles.  3 Days (May 18-May 20\, 2024)
DESCRIPTION:White River from Trujillo Wash to the Enron Gas Wells take out  – 65 miles\, Class II \nThis is a three day\, two night trip .  Plan on two nights camping on the river – that  allows a full day for the long drive back  on Mon to avoid weekend traffic – it is 300 miles from Denver to the Put-in and another 30 or more miles to and from the takeout.  Shuttle takes a good 2 to 3 hours round trip. Put in at Trujillo Wash and take out at Enron Gas Wells. \nThis is an ACA trip – River Rating is Class I/II  (helmet required). There is one Class II rapid in Cowboy Canyon that can “generally” be avoided\, and a new Class II rapid also.  Intermediate paddling skill is required – this is NOT a beginner level trip. You must be able to maneuver your canoe around many strainers and through tight corners with very strong eddy lines\, and be able to eddy out quickly. \nBLM’s Floating the White River brochure describes this portion of the River “for 100 miles between Rangely\, Colorado\, and the river’s confluence with the Green River\, the White River cuts a rugged\, scenic trough into the high desert plains of the Uintah Basin. This is a place to paddle\, watch wildlife\, and occasionally leave the river for an unforgettable hike.” \nThis is an ACA trip. SUMMARY:Niobrara River Memorial Day - MAY 24 -MAY 27
DESCRIPTION:TRIP IS FULL BUT THERE IS A WAIT LIST \nThis will be an ACA-sanctioned outing/event which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a $10/person insurance fee.  This is an easy\, kids-friendly class 1 river\, with our campground in the middle of the run.  Each day will be about 12 miles and about 4 hours. For more information about skill level and equipment information\, see RMCC Boating Requirements and Recommendations. \nThis beautiful stretch is one of America’s premier scenic heritage waterways; we’ll see many waterfalls\, beautiful hardwood forests\, and birds!  And the resident buffalo herd at the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (https://www.fws.gov/refuge/fort_niobrara/ ) often has calves this time of year.  We run the river on Saturday and Sunday. Most will car camp at Smith Falls State Park\, Friday – Sunday nights; return to the Front Range after breakfast on Monday (about a 6-7 hour drive back to Denver) or continue to see the sights of Nebraska or head up to South Dakota. \nMemorial Day is shoulder season in the Sand Hills of Nebraska and we often have rain on parts of one or more days.  \nNiobrara River Trail description here .  \nDescription from Backpacker magazine:  http://www.backpacker.com/stories/paddle-nebraska-s-niobrara-river \nRiver gage at https://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=06461500.  We generally run it at between 1000 and 2000 cfs. \nSaturday\, we’ll meet at 10am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the Cornell Bridge put-in near Valentine\, down to the Smith Falls State Park campground and beach the canoes\, and then start from there again on Sunday.   If you are not camping\, but meeting us in the morning\, see the note\, below for directions. \nSaturday evening – optional potluck dinner at one of the convenient campsites.  There is a large group shelter generally available in case of rain. \nSunday\, we’ll meet near the boat ramp (where we took out on Saturday) at 10am (CDT) ready to shuttle from the campground to the take-out – probably at Sunny Brook Camp\, about a mile upstream of Rocky Ford.  The shuttle takes over an hour\, so non-drivers should plan to relax\, hike to Smith Falls\, and/or birdwatch at the campground while the drivers are driving. We will verify the 10am shuttle start on Saturday night. \nSunday evening: Informal group happy hour possible\, but no specific group activity planned.  Some of us will be checking out (i.e.\, scouting\, not running) the Norden chute and going to the The Nature Conservancy Niobrara Valley Preserve near there) (https://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/nebraska/placesweprotect/niobrara-valley-preserve.xml  \nCamping \nThe campground at Smith Falls State Park doesn’t open until early May  and there is no official group site.   We used to have the campground to ourselves but in recent years\, its gotten more crowded. The campground was reconfigured for 2021\, adding more sites and mixing the use between tents and RVs in all sites. You can make reservations now – here’s the link to the on-line camping reservations  https://nebraskastateparks.reserveamerica.com \nYou can also call the park for reservations ( (402) 376-1306) but your best bet is on-line. The camping cost is $15/day/site plus a day use fee. \nNote: Directions to Cornell Bridge from Valentine:  Take Nebraska 12 east about 4 miles to the Ft Niobrara Wildlife refuge turn-off. Turn right towards the river and then make the first right into the access parking lot.
