Volunteers Wanted for Two Special Projects

This year, RMCC is adding service projects to our RMCC schedule of events. For a start, we are looking for volunteers for two events — one designed as a service project and one adding service to a regular RMCC trip.   There are a variety of options to participate.

For the April 20 project, we need to know SOON if you have an interest in participating (weather permitting).

April 20 (Earth Day) — Join Wildland Restoration Volunteers for a morning restoration project on the banks of the South Platte River near Milliken.  For this family and youth friendly event, participants will spend a fun morning planting and helping ensure that the S. Platte is sustainable for years to come, followed by lunch and midday s’mores around the fire circle. There will be some restoration activities available for younger participants (age 5 and up).  This is a special WRV youth and family project as most of their projects are limited to 14, 16 or 18 years old and above.

We are looking for RMCC volunteers to join in the morning restoration project AND/OR bring canoes for the afternoon to introduce the participants to canoeing.  Depending on weather, water levels, some logistics TBDand the interest of available RMCC volunteers, we may take participants on short (350’ – 2500’) river runs, demonstrate strokes and ferrying (put-in and take-out at the site), demonstrate river rescues (RMCC victims only), display canoes with whitewater rigging and packed for tripping, and conduct throw rope competitions.  Anyone for leading a knot tying demonstration/class?

June 9 — Standley Lake, A Morning for the Birds with Live by Living.  LBL provides transformative outdoor experiences — primarily hiking and snowshoeing — for cancer survivors and their caregivers.  We are looking for RMCC volunteers to share a tandem or loan a solo to cancer survivors or their caregivers for our morning paddle on Standley Lake.  We will be inviting LBL members to join this regular ACA-sanctioned RMCC trip as our guests. See June 9 on our events calendar for details on the Standley Lake trip.  Contact Kathryn if you want more information about LBL or are interested in sharing or loaning a canoe. We do not yet know how many LBLers will want to join us.

If you have questions or would like to help plan or join in either project, please contact Kathryn Mutz at kathryn.mutz@colorado.edu

If you have other ideas for volunteer activities, please contact Kathryn or Trip Master Lynne Carpenter and we’ll help you plan it!
