RMCC’s Founding and Early History

St Vrain River put-in

If you were at the RMCC 50th Anniversary Celebration, then you heard (and saw) Jeff Keeler’s presentation about the canoe club’s founding and its early years. In addition to his oral presentation, Jeff has taken the time to write a history of the canoe club’s early days. His history is filled with stories from Jeff and other early club members, plus lots of fascinating photos. No one is better qualified to record the beginnings of the Rocky Mountain Canoe Club. Jeff was there. Jeff helped start the club.

Jeff’s history document ends with a quote that pretty much sums up the canoe club for me.

Jeanne Waters says it best and I’m sure we all feel this way even today, “These were special times, with talented, trustworthy, solid people. … I remember the camaraderie and the sense that whatever happened on the river, others would be there for us and for one another. We could trust not only their paddling expertise, but also their problem-solving and rescue abilities. We could have faith in our companions, no matter what came.”
