Who would have thought — 50 years ago when this canoe club began — that organizer notes, hand-drawn trip maps, lists of boating gear, safety tips, and mimeographed newsletters would be used to help tell the story of our club’s founding and history? If you joined us for the 50th Celebration at the 2025 annual meeting, you saw some of the fruits of our celebration committee’s labor.
This history is now compiled on the Club History page at https://rockymountaincanoeclub.net/club-history/. You can find a link to this page under About in the website menu. There you will find links to Jeff Keeler’s RMCC Founding and Early History document and his accompanying slideshow, our newsletter archive, club statistics, and a collection of year end reports. It is an impressive look back at how the club has evolved.
Also, we have collected more newsletters, some predating the Voyageur’s Companion, going back to 1976! Those newsletters are being scanned and prepared for the website and will more than double our online collection. Expect to see those additional newsletters on the website this spring. In currently available issues, you can revisit freezing Thanksgiving paddles on the Rio Grande, read harrowing tales of impalement on broken paddles (everyone survived!), pins, and long boat chases. Or laugh out loud at the “Ask Wally” advice column for novice paddlers.
Take a look. Enjoy. And get ready to make new history this year on the water.
