6-19-15 Update: This trip has closed. Contact Ken if you want to be notified in the event of a cancellation.
We have various reservations and advanced planning to do for our trip to Quetico, so this is the last call for RMCC members who want to sign up. We will hold it open for RMCC members for 10 days, but with a few limits.
We are going to limit our group to four tents (due to limited camp site sizes). And to an even number of participants (for efficiency of portages). We have two people/tents so far, and that’s a quorum; but we prefer two more. If you are a solo, and are the next to email Ken, you are the tentative until we get a fourth.
Details: We are going to use a near-by fishing cabin the night of Sep 5, put-in at Beaverhouse Lake (Northwest part of Quetico Provincial Park) on Sep 6. On the water for 6 nights, 6 ½ days. Take out at Nym Lake near noon on Sep 12. If the paddling is good, we will have one day where we use the same campsite for two nights, just so we can have a down day for day for fishing or exploring. Probably paddling about 10 miles/day or so; will try to limit the portages to two per day of about a mile or less each. You have to be in good enough shape to carry a full pack of 50 pounds or so (or a 45-50 pound canoe) for about a mile or so and then go back and get a second load.
If you want to fly to MSP, you leave Denver early on Sep 5 and return late on Sep 13, so it will take only 4 work days if you get Sat-Sun off plus Labor Day. It takes two full days of driving.
For keeping the portages manageable, we will be using only lite-weight Kevlar canoes. Our expenses will be, in addition to travel expenses, $14/day for Quetico Prov Park camping fees; $45/daily (two people) to rent the Kevlar canoes from an outfitter, if the participants don’t have one. The cabin the night before put in will probably be less than $50 each, if we have four. And a similar amount for a hotel near Duluth on the night of Sep 12. And, of course, your share of meals, gas, and food. If you fish, the fishing conservancy fee in recent years has been $29 plus a required $10 outdoor card.
First come, first served. Limited to 4 tents, and we already have 2. Email to [email protected] for more information or to sign up!
