Powell Houseboat from Bullfrog into the Escalante Arm

October 9, 2020October 18, 2020

THIS TRIP IS FULL AND A WAITING LIST HAS BEEN STARTED. Please contact Karen Amundson at [email protected] if you want to be added to the waiting list.

October 9-18 (Thursday-Saturday) Class I-II.  Arrive at the Bullfrog Basin Campground or Defiance House Lodge (or your choice) late afternoon on October 8 and be ready to launch at the Bullfrog Marina by mid-morning of the 9th.  Ideally we will camp at 4 or 5 locations, usually for 2 nights per camp.  We plan to explore on foot and/or paddle all of the accessible canyons in the Escalante Arm and do another 3-4 more side canyons off of the main Powell lake.  We will find petroglyphs, Indian ruins, waterfalls, slot canyons, and more.

We will go from 1 camp to the next on a 53’ Adventurer houseboat as it has an angled upper deck upon which we can slide our kayaks up and down.  Due to this boat stashing and also due to weather considerations (can get big winds and waves especially on the wider parts of the lake) we will limit boats to those that weigh less than about 60 pounds, and want to have skirted sea kayaks or decked canoes.  Contact Karen for questions about your boat.  Class I-II due to waves caused by wind and/or speed boats.  Also, landings can be scarce.

The trip will be limited to 10 people and a waiting list.  But it will be priced for 8 people with a likely refund of 20-25% assuming we do not lose people near when the trip starts and do not damage the houseboat.  A per person price of $620 will cover houseboat rental, gas, insurance, and a few small items.  Post trip refund will be around $100 if all goes well.  We plan to have 2 people fixing dinner for the whole group each of the 1st 5 nights of the trip, and then do smaller groups after that.  On your own for breakfasts and lunches.

The houseboat has 2 “staterooms”, a big upper deck, small front and back decks, and a lower bunk room that is usually used for storage for a few people who want to camp on shore.  Available camps vary depending on lake water levels and how many boats are already parked or searching the area.  Shore camping also varies.  The boat has a nice kitchen with a big grill, oven and 2 refrigerators.  Carol, Werner, and Karen have experience with driving/parking the big boat, and took the Houseboat 101 class.

Contact Karen Amundson at [email protected] for further information and to join the trip or be on the Wait List.
