The Escalante to Whitewater section of the Gunnison River can be run most any month of the year and each season has its own attraction. Our Fall trip will offer stunning canyon views, warm days and cool nights, and a moderate river flow (early Oct averages 1300 cfs). The 26 miles between Escalante Bridge (near Delta CO on Highway 50) and the Whitewater take-out is mostly Class I and low Class II with one bigger Class II rapid below Escalante Bridge that can be lined or portaged.
Two alternate itineraries are available
3 Day Option: 26 river miles
a) Sat: put in Escalante Bridge and take-out at Dominguez Canyon (opposite the Bridgeport trailhead)
b) Sun: layover day to explore Big Dominguez Canyon: petroglyths, water falls, pioneer buildings
c) Mon: paddle to Whitewater take-out, drive home
2 Day Option: approx. 26 or 12 river miles
a) Sat: as above
b) Sun: either paddle to Whitewater take-out, drive home, or paddle short distance downstream to Bridgeport trailhead, drive home
