Yampa River: South Beach to Duffy Mountain

Canoe this delightful easy (Class 1+) portion of the Yampa near Craig, Colorado. We usually see many birds, and the scenery will migrate from  cottonwood terrain to quaint ranchland, and then to remote butte-canyon scenery.  The earlier than usual dates will mean the water is a little cooler, but also we should enjoy being there before the mosquitoes take over.

Available camping on May 3.  For a fee, there is camping at the Yampa River State Park near Hayden, CO. That campground is fully developed with  sites for both tents and RV’s and is about 20 miles from the South Beach launch site, and in early May will have plenty of available sites. Also, Craig has a motel or two.

No permits are required to float this section of the Yampa, but Colorado State Park permits are required for vehicles at both the South Beach and Duffy Mountain river access points.  An annual Colorado State Park pass will work, otherwise daily park passes can be obtained at the Yampa River State Park near Hayden, CO.
